Seems like an extremely valid question to me. I'm not sure what the timeline for the changeover looks like either. Of course, I personally don't care, but I can imagine tons of people do.]1/12/2009 5:29:18 PM |

you mean MP4s
They expect the entire catalog to be DRM free by April IIRC, with a large chunk now already DRM free.
However, they have accepted a variable pricing structure with older songs dropped to 69 cents and more popular songs being .99 or 1.29

95% of music players play AAC, but you don't care about that. You only asked that question to get the opportunity to whine like a little bitch. 1/12/2009 7:09:13 PM |
Noen All American 31346 Posts user info edit post |
^no, they don't. Very few non-Apple mobile devices support DRM'ed AAC. And still a very small amount (percentage of different mp3 players, not percentage of popular players/market share) support AAC at all. 1/12/2009 7:30:18 PM |

^ I don't think a single other player supports DRMed AAC.
Several, but not a majority, support MP4. 1/12/2009 7:33:24 PM |

Apple just allowed 4 competing web browsers onto the App Store. Could be interesting if this is the beginning of a change for Apple, and other music player and podcasting apps will be allowed on http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/01/14/four_third_party_web_browsers_appear_on_apples_app_store.html 1/14/2009 12:03:32 PM |

they only allow browsers that are safari based. not competitive if you ask me. safari sucks.

.... any basis for your "safari sucks" statement? They're WebKit-based, not "safari based." WebKit is a fast and standards-compliant rendering engine. It was deemed good enough by Google to base Chrome on, so what's your problem with it and what would you prefer instead? (i'm not saying I agree that they aren't allowing Gecko or other engines on, but that's not my point) 1/14/2009 1:00:49 PM |

^^you obviously have never used Safari.
Safari is by far the best browser I've ever used AND easiest browser to develop on. The only thing that Safari lacks that FireFox has is the autocompleter on the address bar using your history. 1/14/2009 3:15:18 PM |

^^safari doesn't come close to Firefox for development. It's an okay browser that does a LOT of shit in a completely proprietary way. Text rendering FTL. 1/14/2009 5:41:26 PM |
RSXTypeS Suspended 12280 Posts user info edit post |
^are you serious? Safari requires the least amount of testing because it works the way its supposed to. Text rendering looks good, images etc. Like I said, the only downside to safari is that it doesnt have the same autocompleter on the address bar as FF.
Also with FF you have to download a bunch of add-ons for development purposes while Safari has them all built in. A lot of Web Developer and Firebug features for example. 1/14/2009 5:51:06 PM |
Noen All American 31346 Posts user info edit post |
^Dude, Safari renders text differently than EVERY other browser on the market. And it's completely different.
It's javascript and dom debug model is damn near impossible to use compared to firefox.
It's all still ass-slow rendering pages, and the UI is not anywhere close to the responsiveness of Firefox 3. On my Mac, I actually removed it entirely because Firefox is SO much easier to use, faster, and more extensible. 1/14/2009 7:32:05 PM |
RSXTypeS Suspended 12280 Posts user info edit post |
^ok now i know you're just trolling because for a minute I thought that maybe you were comparing Safari for windows vs. Firefox for windows...not saying that Safari on windows does or doesn't suck (haven't used it enough to tell). BUT there is no way in hell you can be serious about Safari being slower and less responsive then FireFox on a Mac.
I use Mac's 24/7 and not only does FireFox take a heck of a long time to load the first time, but its far less responsive then Safari. No question about that. I do use FireFox more because of the use of its history and the autocompleter (not to mention I have to test in FireFox) but when i'm in a hurry I always use Safari because I know I can get to what I need faster and with less headache.
Also its obvious that Safari renders things differently otherwise it wouldn't look better
if you want to continue this pointless debate, bring it up in the Mac OS X software thread.

Maybe I need to go get the system updates for the latest Safari then.
My firefox always stays running, and I have never, not once, had to wait for it to do anything. Granted I do very very very little web dev anymore, so things may well have changed over the last year and half or so.
But to be clear, text does not look better in Safari, whether windows or mac. It looks blurry and thick as hell, and totally destroys the intent and cleanliness of pretty much every digital reading font. 1/14/2009 8:02:26 PM |

what version of Safari were you running Noen? the browser runs very well on my laptop... even does on my older tower at work... FF3 on the other hand... not quite so much, and I'm a die hard FF guy on the Windows side of things. I did see a nice trick though earlier today... setting a manual proxy to 127.0.0.1 with port 0 (yes, localhost) actually seems to speed things up for FF3 in OS X
FWIW, the web developer add-on for FF is clearly leaps and bounds better than Safari's Inspector, though supposedly they're improving it for future versions (Safari 4 is still a bit buggy and incomplete); other than that, Safari is where it's at on my machines

i'm not going to argue that FireFox (3) is faster than Safari on a Mac (it's not), but just today, I had to create a new FireFox profile on my Mac because there was some wonky PDF behavior, and it made a world of difference in my FireFox responsiveness. I guess my old profile had all sorts of crap and cruft built up in it, and startup took 10, 15, 20 seconds sometimes, and sometimes there was noticable interface lag. I just created a new profile, and even after importing my bookmarks and reinstalling my add-ons, the FireFox startup time is almost instantaneous.1/14/2009 9:00:33 PM |

this has probably been brought up before, but i would like to reiterate how ridiculous it is that this phone that does about everything but your taxes CANNOT receive simple motherfuckin pics and other mms messages. and to try to fix this att set up even more ridiculous website that does not load half the time, and when it does load, it makes you MANUALLY type login and password that was generated using the apache code it seems 1/15/2009 8:16:12 PM |

I, too, have reiterated that many times.
I still don't fucking get why they don't send you a link that is like http://www.viewmymessages.com/username:password where username and password are of course the codes they want you to fucking type in.
It makes No. Fucking. Sense.

Joel, you got to check out the Contour plastic ones. Less than 1 mm thick, plastic doesnt make it stuck in your pocket like rubberized cases, you can get one with a flap on the bottom that allows you to dock it without taking the case off.
And dont forget the precut film for the screen area. works as well as that clear bra on your truck. you can get them glossy or flat
ill stop by and show ya this weekend. make sure there's cold beer in the fridge
^ as much as i drop mine a case is amost a neccessity. my 1st gen held up ok functionally even after getting a few serious dents in the aluminum backing since i never used a case. plastic back on the 3G does not inspire confidence as far as durability goes

My phone is now possessed. Every time it rings, it starts vibrating (no ring tone) and just keeps vibrating. I can't pick up the phone call at all. The first time, the screen was completely black, this time it showed me who was calling, gave me the option to slide to answer, yet didn't respond to anything I did. It vibrated for almost 2 minutes before shutting itself off and restarting.
Anyone else heard of this problem? Or should I just hope it goes away? 1/22/2009 9:21:40 PM |

okay, now it's been doing it for about 30 minutes straight. none of the buttons will respond and it won't stop vibrating. i'm sick with the flu, and i just want to go to bed

this question has been answered probably, but i'm not reading through 67 pages so...
how is the reception on the iphone 3G? my house is iffy even though i can look out the front door and see a cell tower. everyone with at&t has trouble with calls from my house. verizon and alltel customers seem to get good reception. i really don't want to switch providers and i'd like to get an iphone, but if i can't make calls then it's of no use to me. is it any better/worse than other phones you guys have had in the past? 1/24/2009 12:20:42 AM |
