I know I haven't cashed in near as many mtt's as some of the people on here, but I definitely would have played it aggressive in order to get chips. You might not cash in every mtt playing coin flips, but you have to take chances somewhere and I would rather do it early on then on the bubble. 12/17/2005 5:40:38 PM |

so right there even, did you assume you were beat, but were willing to risk 1/5 of your stack in the name of massive chip accumulation? 12/17/2005 9:38:49 PM |

the guy had been attempting to steal my blinds all day long
i got fed up with it and thought my ace was live
if he puts me on a resteal, hes going to reraise
so ill reraise him back if i put him on a steal to start off with, or maybe a low pair.
worst case im against ak or something and am like 3:1 dog.
that would be bad.
best case the ace is live and i dont have to make another decision in a nice sized pot hitting an ace with a weak kicker. players like turner wouldnt do this very often, if at all. I probably do it too often.
it is totally a situational thing, player dependant.
my read was obviously way off and obviously i didnt want a call the big rereraise. In every tournament youve got to get lucky at least once or twice to go deep.
notice also its not like level two or something, and taking the pot down with the big reraise would have still been a nice sized pot to win. 12/17/2005 9:45:19 PM |

^yea, that's kinda what i meant, so if you have some chips you are more willing to risk sliding back to the average if it means you have a chance at building a huge stack?
what about the queens? (i think i can guess the answer)
i usually play cash games, so i'm kinda trying to refine my tournament strategy (i think i might have been a little too close to the survival mentality, and I'm trying to break away from that a little bit)

the queens in short i would not have pushed.
its not worth it yet in the 2nd round.
the morec hips you gain the less they are worth.
the fewer you have, the more they are worth. 12/17/2005 9:55:09 PM |

keep in mind that in cash games you can just reload.
you cant in tournaments
what is more important, a small edge early, or still being alive 12/17/2005 9:57:35 PM |

"you can't win a tournament early but you can surely lose it." one of the first and best pieces of advice I ever got on tournament play 12/18/2005 12:26:58 AM |

see that's kinda the theory i've always applied, but lately i've been seing people advocating grabbing a lot of chips early, for instance.....are you better off with 1000 chips at the beginning of the tournament, or 1000 chips at the end of the first break, i think most people would agree you are better off with 1000 at the beginning. You just have to walk a tight line between the two i guess 12/18/2005 2:20:01 AM |

Yup... pretty much same advice... I'm always willing to raise with QQ early in a tourney... but I rarely REraise with it in this situation. If I limp with them, which I often do early, I just call the raise... I might push back on the flop if it's a good one, but I don't really want to race against AK here, and besides, that raiser always could have AA or KK.
Let's say the flop is good, like 25T or something like that, and the raiser bets out... again, I just call. If he then checks the turn when no A or K hits, I bet... but if he bets the turn, I again just call unless I really think he's got JJ or maybe AT or something like that. It's not worth it overinvesting in the pot this early, especially since you'll definitely lose your whole stack if he's got KK or AA.12/18/2005 2:48:43 AM |

Define "too much credit"
I have A-4 off on the button in a MTT. Five players see the flop of A, 2 , 5 rainbow. I see a potsized raise from the SB and it's called twice. I ship out. Turn is a blank and the SB goes all-in.
SB has 9, 4.... a bluff. Caller has 6, 6 for middle pair. Wow.... 12/19/2005 11:45:09 PM |

Double post here... totally unrelated things though
I was reading an article by Phil Gordon where he was discussing how he plays in a Tourney as the bubble approaches and he made this statement:
"I've been the bust-out bubble boy plenty of times in my career by playing aggressively in the spot, but I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that my great final table finishes were all fueled by the chips that I was able to steal on the bubble. Don't be afraid to go broke on the bubble -- let your opponents play the scared money. Play courageously and aggressively on the bubble and I know you'll make more final tables and get to the champion's circle much more often."
I agree with this already so that's not where I'm headed with it although I find it challenging not to play with the "I don't want to miss the money mindset."
Mainly I was wondering if some of the more experienced folks on here like Pilgrim and Turner had some specific examples or thoughts on how they have used this approach before. 12/23/2005 10:30:00 AM |

a couple days ago i was in a limit tourney, about 10 people before the money, decided to get aggressive, first hand of my switched gear, i run into a slow-played rockets, blew about 80% of my stack, with that said however, I played it really bad, i should've been able to conserve about 50% of those chips, but anyway, i still made the money, but i was positioned to run pretty deep, oh well, i guess i would say get pretty aggressive, but don't get stubborn to the point where you look past the obvious signs that you are toast on any given hand ya know
my experience so far with turning stone has been really good, wow the game was SOFT, i crushed it, too bad my BR was really low so i was playing below my preferred limit, but i'm definetly gonna move up next time. For people that play 100nl and such in casinos, are these games just as soft as the low limit, or do people actually try to save their chips for decent hands?

I've been playing 100nl and 300nl at Hawaiian Gardens a lot lately. Easy money.
40nl sucks because there are so many fishes. You can't bluff and you can't protect your hand. With 100-300nl, people play tighter but more predictably. Today I left with $500 after a few hours of 100nl. No really memorable hands.
Yesterday I walked out with $500 after playing 300nl for about an hour. I would have left with a grand, but I ran into a boat vs my trip 10's.
I'm curious about how much money I can win at one of those tables if I play all day. The more you win, the easier it is to buy pots b/c of your stack size. 12/25/2005 3:08:42 AM |

Okay i officially hate poker.
A3K10 (k-10 suited) im LOW in chips UTG so i go all in and get called in a few places.
Flop comes four to a flush with 4 to the low... turn is a blank.... river makes my flush but not my freaking low.
Well not only did i not scoop the pot, someone had the ace flush, naturally.
If I win the pot i cant finish lower than 7th, and i still have a chance to finish higher...
11th gets a whopping $30 instead of $150.
I must be the best natural Omaha Hi/Lo player ever though. 128 players, 121 rebuys, and 48 add-ons...
I come in 11th without rebuying, adding on, or knowing what the hell constitutes a low hand.

playing the 100k sunday bodog tourney with 555 people, 70 people left, blinds are 800/1600 payouts start @ $340 for 54th place up to 25,000 for first. Average stack is about 21k im at ~40,000 on the button with KK. First position raises to 4,500, next guy calls immediately putting him all in, the guy one off the button also comes in. I have everyone in the hand so far covered by almost double so I move all in. THe guy in the small blind sitting @ 65,000 goes all in right after me. THe other 2 in the pot lay down. Small blind turns over fucken A5 suited and the guy all in shows AJ. Im feeling pretty good and then the fucken flop comes A9A, turn gives a 5 and just so the can stick it in me a little further the give me a K on the flop for kings full. So the fucken momo and his A fucken 5 take the pot right under 100k chips... i would have probably had enough chips to just sit till about till about the final two tables where the payouts where at a minimum $1100... i wanted to break that fucken schmucks neck 12/26/2005 2:35:34 PM |

This may sound a little crazy but with that much action in front of me I probably would have laid that hand down at that point in the tournament. I know KK is a favorite going into the hand but only 74% against an A. Later in the tourney or earlier in the tourney I probably call though.
With the stack you had you probably would have been better off to keep making steals and not put 100% of your stack at risk.
That's just my 2 cents and I'm no expert. 12/26/2005 11:22:30 PM |

What is the play if you know someone has an over card pair and you hit top two pair on the flop and they triple your bet out and everyone folds to you? I had about $50 left after I would have just called and went all in. They called and hit a set on the river. Shit like that happened quite a few times this week. I put one fucker all in with a $80 pot already so he had to call like $100 when i had a set and he hit his flush.
I'm without a bank roll. Time to start playing .10/.25 again.
PS how do you get the people in casinos to take you right to a loose table. I had to ask for 4 table changes before I found a suitable one today. 12/29/2005 1:45:07 AM |

tables change composition abruptly by continually changing, you're not gonna get a feel for any of them tight players are still prone to start playing looser, if you stay at a table you have a better chance of recognizing the switch if a table is tight, shoot it up yourself
^^and am i just crazy or is that a straight, and not a jackpot 12/29/2005 2:00:32 AM |

It was just everyone was playing solid. I tried radically raising and pushing people around last night, but I got into a sticky situation and blew through about $250. I was up at the first of it though. I don't know how to play when everyone is being a tight ass like myself. I also had a 4 hour run of J x and worse. I actually got excited when I saw 10 8 suited.
I'm sure a large part of my shitty luck was really bad cards. 12/29/2005 2:08:36 AM |
