Kiwi, your pictures are always so sharp, what kind of pp tools do you use?

^^thats cool. i was just wondering. normally with exposures anything over a like one or so seconds the sensor heats up a bit and causes a bit more noise than normal anyway. so using a higher ISO would almost make a 7 second exposure look like 1600 i would think. thats why i asked. but i definitely understand playing with options and things like that. i really do like that picture by the way.

i still haven't really gotten around to taking anything new lately. was gonna take a red picture but nothing red has been jumping out at me here lately. maybe i'll see something. i'm about to roll into raleigh.

Sometimes Ill use the sharpen tool if not everything is what I wanted. However most of my pictures come out that way because I always use an insanely high shutter speed or always auto focus.

yepper...took them in DC a few weekends ago...the sea life and bird were at the zoo , the birdbath was at the smithsonian castle, and the light through the evergreen was at arlington

the one below is at the sculpture gardens and the one below that is (obviously) arlington

i don't use an actual DSLR (i came to this thread early on with the intention of getting one, but with the advice of ZiP, chocolatervh, Ronny, and a few others, ended up getting a prosumer)...i use a panasonic lumix DMC-FZ30 (which is why you see so much noise in the high ISO shots...i love my leica optics, but panasonic is notorious for noisy images at mid-to-high ISO levels)

my trip to chile last year (same camera)...the pics in the andes mountains were taken in the never-ending rain (i mean, it IS a rain forest), so i was a bit nervous about having it out, but the camera did well

Saw a pretty neat lightning show tonight, so I ran out quickly to see if I could grab some of it...






That last one is actually from a different night. It was the only cloud-to-ground strike.

grr, so apparently Nikon and Canon like to use different names for some of their DSLRs from what the US uses This makes researching that much more difficult.

not really that much different. Only different for their consumer line up. European and Asian markets like numbers, US like letters. they both are listed on canon's website and I'd assume the same goes with Nikon if there is in fact any difference in the naming schemes.

patience, tripod, long exposure, had the iso set at about 800, got too much noise and backed it to 400. it's still a bit noisy.

It was a pain in the ass, because I'd have it pointing one way and the mother of all strikes would be just to the left or right. I should've put the kit lens on it so I could've had a wider angle of the whole sky, but I'm retarded.

These are from lake johnson this afternoon. Most of the shots are with an XTi and some fuzzy quantaray zoom (70-300) lens.

I think the numbers are the same, but for example, there's no such thing as a Rebel in Japan and they guy gave me a look when I asked about it lol.

as for my choice not to go with a DSLR, it was due largely to the fact that in order to achieve the same flexibility as my panny, i'd have to lug around multiple lenses...i travel a lot (for school/work, mostly, not as much for pleasure) and since a lot of my travel is backpacking hours (up to about 18) away from trails and "civilization", weight and space was a huge deal

even in the times i'm not doing something backcountry, i like just carrying around one very flexible camera (although it's 2 years old, and it wasn't really new when i got it, so it's becoming a bit outdated)...of course, for the flexibility/size you sacrifice overall image quality (the best i've been able to print flawlessly on a professional printer is 8.5"x11"), total flexibility (i'm pretty much stuck with 35-420mm zoom and F2.8-3.7/F11 aperture range), and an absolutely horrific noise level at anything above ISO100 (it only goes as high as 400 anyway)

on the upside, i have as many manual options as any DSLR, and the leica optics go a long way towards generating good telephoto/wide images...as much as i enjoy photography, i think i may end up getting another prosumer camera in the future, with (hopefully) a larger sensor than 1/1.8" (0.38 cm2 vs the 400D's 3.28 and D60's 3.72)...i'm still a pretty low-end amateur, but it's working out well so far

and there's my decision in a nutshell

pretty much, most p&s and prosumer camera's can do 90% of what DSLR's can do. They have a great value compared to SLR's, but for the maximum creative control, SLR will still be the camera of choice.

Yup, I'm moving there next month. Got a house all lined up with a friend. It's freaking cheap over there. For the same price of an apartment in Raleigh, i'm getting a 3 bedroom house. We are turning the spare bedroom into a dark room/studio for our own needs and making the living room into a theater. And it's in walking distance of the college.

Rebel is a brand name for the US market only, just like Acura. The 350D is a Rebel XT, 400D is the XTi, then there's the 450D and 1000D out now that replaces them.

I've got two, and I only need one of them.
I've got a Lowepro compuday bag (rad bag, works great for carrying other things like laptop, misc gear, etc) and is comfy to wear for extended periods because it wears like a backpack.


I've also got a Canon camera bag that typically is bought as a kit with an extra battery, etc. It is a pretty quality bag.

My parents bought a house in the mountains about a year and a half ago. It is only 5-10 minutes from Boone, right over the TN border. I FINALLY got to visit it a few weeks ago. I haven't taken many photos recently (been busy) so this is my first post here in a while. I only have a 50mm 1.8 at the moment, so the shots aren't very versatile, but I suppose the lens will have to do for a bit until I can scrape up 700 bucks for a 10-22.

At the bottom of the driveway there is a path that leads to the top of the mountain. It was a hell of a hike, especially since we had just eaten a HUGE dinner about 3 minutes prior. It was beautiful at the top though.





My mom makes really good flower crowns. Also, my beard was awesome, but I trimmed it last week.

Underwater photography with dSLR's isn't cheap. You need all sorts of gear -- obviously the camera and lens, the housing, strobes, arms for the strobes, sync cords...and of course, all the other essential dive gear. It's easy to spend $$$$$$ in a heartbeat.

I'd actually recommend getting a relatively cheap P&S, a housing, and a strobe -- you can get that for much cheaper than a dSLR. Plus with a P&S you have the option of doing both macro and wide stuff on the same dive; you don't have that option with a dSLR. I know plenty of people that put the wide angle lens on and drop down to see bad vis, or they put the macro lens on when a wide-angle would be appropriate. Kinda hard to change lenses underwater...

A Canon A570IS is a nice camera for underwater shots; I got mine for ~$130. You can get the Canon housing for ~$170 and the Ikelite for $270. The A570IS has the ability for full manual mode, plus if you put CHDK on it you then have more control plus the ability to shoot in RAW.
