Since when are recruiting and developing talent, motivation, preparation, and play calling part of a coach's responsibilities?

The problem is that firing him now isn't going to even solve the problem. The program is too far diminished. We will have to hit a home run just to get back to relevance within the next five years.

Yeah, 'relevance' is definitely a relevant term (face trolling as usual). If we beat WFU or BC and go to a bowl, then we'll be relevant when compared to NCSU football history.

And I have a hard time believing Yow will fire TOB after 3 straight bowl games and maybe even 3 straight bowl wins (considering who we'll likely play). He's running a program that isn't drawing attention from the NCAA and still winning bowl games. At NCSU, I would think he'd be safe for now.

If the team packs it in for the rest of the year like they did against UVA, then I'd say he would be on the hot seat.

I think we need a after-loss game thread for rational discussion that has the following rules:
1) Can't post till 12 hours after the game so that the bitterness has subsided
2) Can't post hyperbole (e.g., "TOB is the worst coach ever", "It will take 5 years to get back to relevance", etc)
3) Anyone who has ever called for the firing of a coach or coordinator immedeately after a loss during the middle of the season is not allowed to post ever

It would be a nice place for rational people to discuss the game. Just a thought.

In my post I meant relevant in the ACC. I understand we won't be relevant nationally as that is partially a function of our awful conference not just own failings.

And yes I would estimate we are at least five years away from competing for an Acc championship. We are done.

We've lost games left and right with elite QB play for five straight years. You guys have no idea how bad its going to get. Saturday was just foreshadowing.

Here's my official forecast for next season:

PAIN

TOB really put a lot of his marbles into this season. We are not meeting the expectations that TOB even had for this team, let alone our fan base. Next year will feel like a rebuilding year, breaking in a new QB. I am not saying TOB has to go, but the seat is heating up. We seem to drop a WTF game every year, but also win a WTF game ever year too. Last year it was losing to BC and beating Clemson. The year before that it was losing to Maryland and beating FSU. This year it is losing to UVA and beating FSU. The inconsistencies are heartbreaking, but as long as we can put up 8 wins a year, TOB will be safe.
Best case: 9-4
Worst case: 5-7
Likely: 8-5, as we will still be favored vs WF and BC, get our shit pushed in by Clemson, and win our toilet bowl vs a trash team.

Next year, I will be praying just to reach 6 wins and make a bowl, since who the fuck knows what Stocker or Thomas will do at QB. I am hoping that one of them can keep our magical run of solid QBs going. Oh, and I am trying not to think about our vacated secondary for next year either, yikes. Keep the faith, and always support your Wolfpack, or gtfo.

The Miami game was embarrassing on both sides.

And if next year is going to suck so hard it might as well be a rebuilding year for a different coach... no?

Well, in my opinion, we should still give TOB a chance to show us if he can put a solid QB on the field next year. He is a great talent evaluator, and nobody can take that away from him. He will put our best QB on the field next year. Plus, he knows these guys already, and I am sure he has been testing them in practice to prepare for next year. Bringing a new coach next year, would really put us in a position where we are starting from scratch, reevaluating every player and position. TOB as prided himself as a program builder, but his early building at NCSU was stunted by mass injuries. We have not been bitten by the injury bug that bad this year. If TOB regresses next year by 2 or more less wins than this year, then he can take his rebuilding, and shove it. We are in a holding pattern, playing wait and see for 1 more season I feel.

but therein lies the rub ... you're willing to give TOB just a little bit more time because he will always show that one glimmer of hope to make you re-assess the situation. we are always in a holding pattern. so maybe what we need is someone else's [read: new coach] appraisal of the program.

TOB is just a band-aid, we need to rip it off and get it all over with. Next year's "down" roster would be the perfect opportunity.

Yeah, I guess because we haven't won an ACC title in 30+ years, we shouldn't try to compete for them. We all know those belong to the VTs, FSUs, and Clemsons (Wakes?) of the world. I will also accept the level of emotion that the players displayed on Saturday. If you wear an NC State jersey, it is not necessary to take any pride in that. We have always been irrelevant, and therefore that is where we belong.

i really don't understand any O'Brien Lowe analogies at all

Lowe was 1-10 against UNC, O'Brien is 5-1

Lowe was routinely finishing in 10th or 11th place in a 12 team league, O'Brien has been in the top half of the conference standings the last couple seasons

Lowe took over a decent program and brought it down ever year, O'Brien took over a bad program and, after some hiccups the first 2 years, has brought it up over the last few

It wasn't a comparison although it makes as much sense as the sendek comps (hey we had a mediocre coach once in another sport obviously the one we have now is exactly the same!!!)

I really am not that excited for a football coaching search. I can't even troll packpride into thinking we should hire Petrino so there's no chance our big wigs will go for it. Which means we're going to end up with TOB 2.0 or a lottery ticket. Really, the best we can do as far as OCs is the 500th member of the Hal Mumme tree or the guy who doesn't even call the plays at Oregon?

I'm tired of TOB, I don't think we will ever win a Championship with him and I also think this chart about the decline of college basketball coaches with age applies to football as well (for everyone except Bill Snyder).

With that said, I think we'll struggle to do much better than him if we don't bring in a disgraced ex-coach who won big elsewhere. I'm not foaming at the mouth to fire O'Brien but I sure wouldn't mind it if he was gone. If he comes back next year, whatever. It's almost inevitable at this point. Either he's fired/forced out in the next two years or he retires in three.

I put this loss only on TOB. when guys cant make the plays or catch the ball they need to be taken out of the remainder of the game and some else who wants to play should step up. i would kick Underwood of the team if i could.
