Vietnam Vet, 53, Called for Duty in Iraq-Report

Wed Nov 24, 5:33 PM ET

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A 53-year-old Vietnam veteran from western Pennsylvania has been called up for active service with the U.S. military in the Iraq (news - web sites) war, The Tribune Review of Greensburg, Pennsylvania reported on Wednesday.

Paul Dunlap, a sergeant in the Army National Guard, will join an armored division next month as a telecommunications specialist in Kuwait, and expects to be there for at least a year, the newspaper reported.
Dunlap, who has not been in combat since serving as a 19-year-old Marine in Vietnam, could not be reached for comment. He will leave behind his wife Mary, four children and three grandchildren.
"I don't think any of them want me to go," Dunlap told the paper. "I'm thinking it's a long time since I've been in war."
Dunlap, from the town of Pleasant Unity, near Greensburg, Pennsylvania, said he received a call from his sergeant major and was told to report for a soldier readiness program, the newspaper said.
Dunlap's wife was quoted as saying the entire family "prayed that he wouldn't pass his physical."
"It's very, very scary," she said. "He's been a soldier since I met him, but there's a part of me that wonders at 53: Is he going to be up to doing what he needs to do over there?"
Critics of the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq have argued that the current level of U.S. troops there is too low to control an insurgency that has destabilized the country since the ouster of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).
The dependence of full-time troops on national guard members such as Dunlap shows the military is stretched too thin in Iraq and elsewhere, critics say.

To my knowledge, you're absolutly correct...but the idea of this socioty letting any more of its willing troops enter this mess of a war is absurd, much less it's drafted and rather unwilling.

I have just been informed that if they dont fix the job in Iraq within the next 6 years, and if they remove the collegiate standard, then my ass will be the first to be drafted since I'll be like 26. Shit...I sure hope they get the job done and pull out before then.

"Pentagon Sending More Troops to Iraq

Wednesday December 1, 2004

WASHINGTON (AP) - The United States is expanding its military force in Iraq by 12,000 troops, to the highest level since the war began in March 2003, in order to bolster security in advance of national elections, officials said Wednesday.

The expansion will be achieved by sending about 1,500 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, N.C., this month and by extending the combat tours of about 10,400 troops already in Iraq.

One unit, the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division, is being extended for the second time. Its soldiers originally were told they would be going home in November, but in October they got the news that they would remain until the Jan. 30 elections. Now they are being extended until March.

"U.S. deserter numbers reach 5,500

Big News Network.com
Friday 10th December, 2004

Since the war started in Iraq, the Pentagon says 5,500 U.S. soldiers have deserted, with some of them seeking refugee status in Canada, CBS reported Thursday.

Among them is 26-year-old Jeremy Hinzman, whose Toronto court bid for refugee status wrapped up Wednesday.

Hinzman of Rapid City, S.D., joined the Army in January 2001, and was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. He said he didn't want to simply get out of the Army.

'I had signed a contract for four years,' he said. 'I was totally willing to fulfill it -- just not in combat arms jobs.'

Following his hearing, his lawyer and the Solcitor General's office is expected to file written submissions by Jan. 24. After that, the judge said a decision would be made as soon as possible, the Toronto Sun said.

Meanwhile, other soldiers who were denied conscientious objector status are using the Internet to locate Vietnam-era resisters who assist and even drive objectors to Canada, CBS said."

I am glad that some of you are starting to take the War seriously. They are running out of warm bodies to send over. Very few new recruits are volunteering. They are calling up old guys like me -- some of whom are not in great shape. People are being told they can't get out of service after their contracts are over.

Until there is an Anti-War movement, there is going to be little incentive for this administration to scale back their plans to take over the middle east. They feel they have a public mandate and blank check to do what they want without public or congressional oversight. If young people do not get organized and act up you will be at risk of enforced military service.

Has anyone listened to Rumsfeld insult the soldiers who voiced concern over lack of armor. I sure would have no confidence following him and his draft dogging bosses (Dick and George admit to evading service in Vietnam). My view is the Bush daughters need to go over there and perform for the troops (not sure they have many talents). They could visit wounded soldiers or something!! They could tour with their rich, socialite friends (e.g., Paris Hilton).

One of the interesting things is to go back and listen to some sixties protest music (esp Dylan's early work and Country Joe's "Feel Like I am Fixin' to Die." Keb Mo and A Perfect Circle have great new CDs with protest covers. Both do "Imagine" and "Peace, Love, and Understanding." If interested in the sixties youth counterculture, check out my site:

"US Army plagued by desertion and plunging morale

December 10, 2004

WHILE insurgents draw on deep wells of fury to expand their ranks in Iraq, the US military is fighting desertion, recruitment shortfalls and legal challenges from its own troops.

The irritation among the rank and file became all too clear this week when a soldier stood up in a televised session with Donald Rumsfeld, the US Defence Secretary, to ask why the world’s richest army was having to hunt for scrap metal to protect its vehicles.

The same night, interviews with three soldiers who are seeking refugee status in Canada, where they have become minor celebrities, dominated prime time television. They are among more the than 5,000 troops that CBS’s 60 Minutes reported on Wednesday had deserted since the war began.

Many experts say that America’s 1.4 million active-duty troops and 865,000 part-timers are stretched to the point where President Bush may see other foreign policy goals blunted."

"Pentagon Wants Women In Combat

Dave Eberhart
NewsMax.com
Friday, Dec. 10, 2004

The Pentagon is implementing new military plans that will make the concept of women in combat a reality.

The Center for Military Readiness warned this week that the Pentagon is flouting policies mandated by Congress in an effort to implement politically correct policies that increase the number of uniformed women put into harm’s way.

Others suggest the Pentagon tinkering with rules forbidding women in combat is a clear effort to increase boots on the ground as the troop-strapped DoD faces manpower shortages in Iraq and elsewhere around the globe."

"Uncle Sam Wants Your Kids – Now!

Since this tragic war kicked off in March 2003, the United States has evacuated an estimated 50,000 KIA, WIA and non-battle casualties from Iraq back to the States – leaving 50,000 slots that have had to be filled.

...“The bottom line is that Recruiting Command is in trouble,” says another recruiter with almost 30 years of service. “The Army has re-instituted ‘stop loss,’ which is basically a backdoor draft. They’re stopping people from retiring or completing their enlistment and leaving the Army. They do this fairly often, mostly in August and September, depending upon how far behind they believe they’ll be at the end of September.

Unless a miracle happens and the new Iraqi security force decides to stop running and start fighting, we’ll be in Iraq for a long time. Most likely with a draftee force."

PNAC Calling For A Draft?
http://www.truthout.org/fyi/

Quote :
"The strength and influence of this group, therefore, makes the letter they released on January 28 all the more disturbing. It is titled 'Letter to Congress on Increasing U.S. Ground Forces,' and basically calls for a draft without using the word:
"

PNAC letter: http://www.newamericancentury.org/defense-20050128.htm

Quote :
"The United States military is too small for the responsibilities we are asking it to assume. Those responsibilities are real and important. They are not going away. The United States will not and should not become less engaged in the world in the years to come. But our national security, global peace and stability, and the defense and promotion of freedom in the post-9/11 world require a larger military force than we have today. The administration has unfortunately resisted increasing our ground forces to the size needed to meet today's (and tomorrow's) missions and challenges.

So we write to ask you and your colleagues in the legislative branch to take the steps necessary to increase substantially the size of the active duty Army and Marine Corps. While estimates vary about just how large an increase is required, and Congress will make its own determination as to size and structure, it is our judgment that we should aim for an increase in the active duty Army and Marine Corps, together, of at least 25,000 troops each year over the next several years.

The men and women of our military have performed magnificently over the last few years. We are more proud of them than we can say. But many of them would be the first to say that the armed forces are too small. And we would say that surely we should be doing more to honor the contract between America and those who serve her in war. Reserves were meant to be reserves, not regulars. Our regulars and reserves are not only proving themselves as warriors, but as humanitarians and builders of emerging democracies. Our armed forces, active and reserve, are once again proving their value to the nation. We can honor their sacrifices by giving them the manpower and the materiel they need.

Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution places the power and the duty to raise and support the military forces of the United States in the hands of the Congress. That is why we, the undersigned, a bipartisan group with diverse policy views, have come together to call upon you to act. You will be serving your country well if you insist on providing the military manpower we need to meet America's obligations, and to help ensure success in carrying out our foreign policy objectives in a dangerous, but also hopeful, world.

How does that have anything to do with a draft? There are many ways to increase the size of the military without a draft.

If you were to pull your head out of your ass, you would realize that this letter is a call for increased recruitment.

Recruitment is down and will probably stay that way no matter what efforts they make to try to improve recruuitment. Some sort of draft (probably termed "selective service" or some other euphemism) will most likely have to be implemented soon. Even more so with the possibility of action against Iran or Syria.

As President Bush embarks on his second term in office, "the world already has a clue [as] to what to expect from his foreign policy over the next few years," says a leading German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung (in German): "Iran, Iran, Iran."

Online commentators from London to Tehran to Tel Aviv agree. Many say the possibility of military conflict between the United States and Iran, which Washington believes seeks to develop nuclear weapons, is now growing. While verbal warfare between Washington and Tehran is nothing new, international pundits point to a number of recent developments, large and small, that suggest rhetorical bombshells could give way to the real thing. ^^Tim Dickinson is rabidly anti-Bush. Every other article that he has written for Rolling Stone has been about what an embarrasment he is. Do you think that he took a step back and wrote an unbiased analysis of the draft scare, or is it possible that he wrote this with the hopes of stirring youth sentiment against the Bush administration?

Everyone I know in the military is against a draft. The fighting force that exists now is all volunteer, very professional and committed to their mission. If you began adding conscripts that didn't want to be there, the effectivess of the entire military would be damaged.

This a legit article that manages to defuse draft fears (without referencing Jew conspiracies!).
