Now I ain't into dildo antennas.
That's one thing I don't/won't change. I don't like base loaded antennas, or any inductive-coil-loaded antennas. Gimme true quarter wave.
Of course, after performing the calculations, I realize that a quarter-wave antenna for 72MHz is 41 inches long, and for 50MHz is almost 60 inches long. So, they either have to have some form of coil loading in the Tx, or they are 1/8 wave antennas (not fucking likely for 72MHz; more likely for 50MHz)... 4/18/2005 11:04:51 AM |

my multiplex antenna is long than the futaba one... which one is quarter wave?
oh and you gotta see the latest pibros i built... it glides superbly. AUW: 2.5 oz. 4/18/2005 11:07:41 PM |

My guess is that neither is a true quarter wave. My guess is that every thing we get these days has some sort of internal impedance matching.
Though for 72MHz, a quarter wave antenna would be around 41 inches long. THAT would be a little too long! My Futaba has a rather short antenna, but my old Expert is quite a bit longer, as are the two hitecs I have. 4/18/2005 11:15:13 PM |

i just measured the ant. on the multiplex and theres 39.5" hanging out of the tx case... i suppose another 1.5 internally.
of course some germans would make it right 4/19/2005 12:38:05 AM |

yeah i was wondering about that... i've defininitely heard more negatives than positives at this point about the outcome but i hope all goes well.
having the intake on the top of the fuse like that is bad for high aoa... not that it would be detrimental to flight... is the idea is to just fly it around or perform some manuevers and such? what are the goals?

zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
Now my curiosity is piqued about the forward swept wing...I wonder how much time they spent studying the effective pitch axis of rotation and how each airfoil presents itself to airflow when pitched about this axis and the various moments produced. Seems to me that if this wasn't carefully thought out, then a pitched forward wing would tend to be very unstable, oscillating wildly and requiring constant control input to remain even close to neutral.
I don't see how a configuration like this could even be close to stable without making the plane really nose-heavy. If even then. I wish I could have been an aero major, but I majored in alcohol consumption and ass-chasing instead. 4/28/2005 10:54:21 AM |

^Oh, and I managed to pass those subject materials. Unlike mechanical...at least until I got married and calmed down some.

dustm All American 14296 Posts user info edit post |
I'm not sure why they chose that configuration... And the foil on the main wing is really weird... I'd have picked something a little more conventional. Also I think in the wind tunnel they found that the main wing stalled before the cannard, which is BAD 4/29/2005 11:46:31 AM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
VERY bad. One of the major points of a canard configuration is that the canard stalls first, drops, and begins flying again. The plane is supposed to be major stallproof; that is, the main wing never gets a chance to stop lifting adequately, and some sort of rough equilibrium is the result.
How in the hell does their problem occur? What kind of airfoil did they choose? I presume they chose zero incidence on the wing, and most likely the canard. What kind of flow separation is going on here...Dude, I wonder if I can get a peek at this thing up close and the plans and all. 4/29/2005 1:04:00 PM |

Flew the Banana in Charlotte this weekend, flights #8 and #9. I changed the CG and elevator throws and it doesnt tip stall any more. I also have crow braking set up now and it works very well. I'll be out after work today with it. 5/9/2005 9:30:52 AM |

I haven't flown a bit lately. The Beaver has shit the bed (foam just doesn't hold up after repeated flogging; she needs new tail feathers), and I haven't bought any fuel for the other bird.
So, are ye having fun with'er yet, Bryan? That is one BAD airplane. 5/9/2005 9:35:49 AM |
dustm All American 14296 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah i'm crossing over into the fun realm. That snap stall tendency was the main problem flying her... I'm much more comfortable with it now. Hey why dont you build a lil fff plane for the gear you have in the Beaver? If you buy a stack of blucor i'll buy half of it off you. And / or I can pick up a stack of the pink (splittable) stuff and we can just trade half. They are both good for different things and a plane made out of this stuff takes a few hours, and you can go crazy with the glue gun. 5/9/2005 10:36:10 AM |

bttt... think jordan lake would let me out on their overflow plain? falls has signs up to keep people off those cliffs, but jordan looks safer. i wanna fly gliders there... looks like it'll work with just about any wind direction, there are quite a few flyable looking slopes based on the satelite image.

IRL there are a few good damn slopes. Yes, you can walk all over the place.

Yeah its worth going out... Last sunday we did some micro aero-tow. Its the same group of guys that went out last year. There are lots of gliders and probably just as many slow sticks Dan E. had his Bubble Dancer up. Its a built-up 3m R/E/S, and is gorgeous! The heli fly sounds fun. Does Ross fly at RDRC at all or just with the RC Wiggers? 8/24/2005 9:02:52 AM |
