"how long has this "Web Clips" thing been up on Gmail?"

I reported on the introduction of Web Clips in Gmail back in April. Here's the original blog I read it on - http://www.blog.adion44.com/archives/2005/04/12/gmail-rss-for-new-posts/
It appears to be one of those things that they are rolling out to select users, and one day you will find a new tab under "Settings" or maybe you'll see a "New Features" link.
I, for one, don't seem to have it yet. I've said before, though, that if they integrate a fully featured RSS reader into Gmail, I would gladly use it over bloglines. I would be happy to have an (optional, via settings) "RSS" or "Web Clips" link on the column on the left side that would display RSS feeds in a conversation-style list, like it does with email now.

Quote :
"wtf is a web based os"

The column I linked to explains it, but it's much like what Sun was trying to do throughout the 90's with the "the network is the computer" deal. In short, your desktop would turn into a thin-client of sorts, at least on the software side it would. So you'd have a barebone system with a minimal base OS on it, then you would basically access everything through a customized web browser, likely the mythical GBrowser. Through GBrowser you would get to your email (Gmail) and internet obviously, but it would also require you to use what are normally thought of as client applications (e.g. Office) through the web. Then all your data would be stored on central servers, so you could access it from any GooOS computer. You wouldn't have to install anything on your computer - all the applications would be installed and updated remotely, and you'd probably pay a yearly subscription to use whatever apps you wanted. With the rock-bottom prices for parts nowadays (CPUs, RAM, HDD, mobos) I don't see much of a need for thin-clients as there used to be. Thin clients used to be attractive because it required very little and cheap hardware (except for the central servers, of course), but that's not an issue anymore.

here's Kotte's explaination:
Quote :
"So this is my best guess as to how an "operating system" based on the Web (which I will refer to as "WebOS") will work. There are three main parts to the system:

* The Web browser (along with other browser-ish applications like Konfabulator) becomes the primary application interface through which the user views content, performs services, and manages data on their local machine and on the Web, often without even knowing the difference. Something like Firefox, Safari, or IE...ideally browser agnostic.
* Web applications of the sort we're all familiar with: Gmail, Flickr, and Bloglines, as well as other applications that are making the Web an ever richer environment for getting stuff done. (And ideally all Ajaxed up to provide an experience closer to that of traditional desktop apps.)
* A local Web server to handle the data delivery and content display from the local machine to the browser. This local server will likely be highly optimized for its task, but would be capable of running locally installed Web applications (e.g. a local copy of Gmail and all its associated data).

That's it. Aside from the browser and the Web server, applications will be written for the WebOS and won't be specific to Windows, OS X, or Linux. This is also completely feasible, I think, for organizations like Google, Yahoo, Apple, Microsoft, or the Mozilla Foundation to make happen (more on this below)."

me too - should be another optional link in the Gmail sidebar and have tight integration with Gmail messages and client-side synching.

is there any way to display the weather of a non-us city in the sidebar?

doesn't seem like it. it asks for a zip code in the US.

that's pretty near-sighted of them.

Something also pissing me off about the sidebar and personalized homepage is that it will not recognize mutual funds...until that is fixed and they add tv listings, I'm sticking with My Yahoo

several Maps + Katrina mashups or changes.

First, on the Maps home page Google has added a link to view new ariel photography of New Orleans - http://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+Orleans&t=e
When you're over NO, there is now a "Katrina" button that shows ariel images from Aug 31, and you can compare those to the original satellite images.

here's a 3rd party one that does the same thing, but puts the images side by side - http://tinyurl.com/7eck5

here is a good idea - http://www.katrinashelter.com/ - you can offer shelter for hurricane refugees by adding your house/shelter to the map. This would be much more useful, of course, if hurricane victims could get online.....

here people can add and ask for information at a specific place in New Orleans using a map - http://www.scipionus.com/

And Google is offering several Google Earth overlays for Katrina images and info - http://earth.google.com/katrina.html

^ going further with that, it appears that this may be the start of "Google TV", which of course, nobody is sure exactly what that is. but that never stopped people from speculating!

http://www.buygoogle.com/2005/09/era-of-couch-potato-is-so-over.html
http://google.blognewschannel.com/index.php/archives/2005/09/26/google-hates-chris-er-loves-chris/

also worth nothing that a couple days ago (or sometime recently), Google Video changed video players from the previous homebrew video player that had to be downloaded and installed to some kind of fully embedded Flash-hack.
http://google.weblogsinc.com/entry/1234000620060520/

also, others have been taking notice of the re-emergence/dissapperance of the Web Accelerator
http://www.buygoogle.com/2005/09/google-web-accelerator-risen-from-dead.html
http://www.buygoogle.com/2005/09/gwa-is-back-update.html
BuyGoogle seems to think that the GWA had too much work behind it and is part of a much bigger plan (possibly including Google TV) to be discontinued because of some bad press. Looks like after the initial deluge of bad PR for GWA, they're laying low and trying to figure out how to reintroduce it in a more favorable way.

so we all know that you can go to Google and type a flight number (like UAL 11) and get links to travelocity, expedia, and fboweb for real-time flight information. Now the fboweb.com link also includes a Google Maps mashup showing the flight location and information. cool.

^^ dunno - the only consistent news I keep hearing of it is from the guys at buygoogle.com. I actually don't use it myself, so I've not been paying much attention.

also, we can only hope that a Google Calendar is coming soon, hopefully with tight integration into Gmail - http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050928-173506
http://calendar.google.com/ redirects to google.com, and gcalendar.com is being held by a common Google domain holding company.

"TechConnect" is an initiative in San Francisco that appears to be headed by the mayor to bring cheap/free wireless networking to the whole city. http://www.sfgov.org/site/tech_connect_page.asp?id=33899

Google has submitted an offer to provide the service for free
http://wireless.weblogsinc.com/entry/1234000100061360/

That would be a hell of a start for rolling out municipal (wireless) internet services. If the government can push the burden off to a company like Google, then the tel-cos and the likes of Verizon will have a much harder time at blocking it in court than if the city was doing it (like Philadelphia, i think..., or somewhere in Colorado).

something potentially big to be announced this morning at 10:30 PT
http://wcdata.sun.com/webcast/archives/VIP-2166/
Some kind of collaboration between Google and Sun.
GoogleOffice? Java....ummmm.... maps.....
i dunno - main thing of interest coming out of Sun would be OpenOffice I imagine, and Java I guess. Sun needs some help from the likes of Google though if they want to compete with MS in anything

well - the realmedia stream isn't working for me. Can anyone else watch it? (of course I have to make sure my time conversion is right.... I'm in germany, which is 6 hours ahead of EST, which is 3 hours ahead of PT.... so if it's 7:45pm in Germany, then it's 10:45AM in San Jose, right?)
i dug up some more speculation though -
http://google-blog.dirson.com/post.new/0285/
http://blogs.pcworld.com/techlog/archives/000959.html

So within minutes/hours I guess we'll all know if it's true that Google has gone and AJAXed up OpenOffice and created a truly in-browser office suite, complete with seamless online storage and back up.

to tell you the truth, I haven't made good use of it - don't even use it actually. It's annoying that it doens't work well in FireFox - you can't drag the sections around and a couple other things don't fully work I think.

So in your FireFox, can you click and drag the headers for each section and re-arrange the sections? If you don't know what I'm talking about , open IE then click the headers, and you can drag them around. It doesn't work on my FF at work in Windows, nor my FF here at home on my Mac, but it does work in Safari on my Mac.

I think they need to make an option so that you can make your google.com/ page the portal if you want, and turn it on and off with your account, instead of making you use the google.com/ig/ URL. In your "account preferences" (another thing that's sorely lacking with the so-called "google account" is a nice, unified account preferences page) you should be able to say "make google.com home personalized" or something, so on any computer you can sign-in and have google.com personalized. I know, I know - "just click Personalized Home" and you can go there; that's not the point though. It still redirects to you a new URL, where it should use the regular URL so you don't have to update any bookmarks, search bars, home pages, etc.

Unfortunately, I must resort to "My Yahoo!" because the Google personalized search page has no support for mutual funds, custom investment portfolios, or TV listings. Until then, I don't even bother with the personalized page as it takes longer to load for essentially no benefit to my searching experience.
