I guess I'm just missing why they pushed the Live brand for a couple years, just to let it die and have another four letter site take over...

I think "bing" is just like a technology name, I'd imagine that eventually "live.com" will just absorb the bing engine. But I have no idea honestly.

The Live brand definitely isn't dead at all, search is only a tiny part of the Live brand (cloud, office, communications, windows, etc)

Honestly, if it does what I need it to, I'm not gonna think twice about the name.

^^ On a related note (apologies if already mentioned), Office Live Workspace coupled with Office Live Update is extremely convenient when wanting to quickly backup an office file your working on.

Anyone watch the E3 keynote this morning?

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/projectnatal/

Pretty damn cool. What impressed me the most was that they had the balls to ACTUALLY demo it on stage. Even with some pretty obvious glitchiness, it was far, far better than I expected (compared to the obvious fluff video).

The interesting part is, I think this will sell far more because of it's non-gaming functionality. Facial recognition for sign-in, no-remote for dashboard and media playback and voice recognition are all pretty damn huge for the non-gamer consumer.

If they ever partner up with a US cable provider (a-la Sky), I absolutely see the 360 replacing DVR's as bundled set top boxes in the not-too-distant future.

EXACTLY! I just posted this in the 360 thread...

Quote :
"With the technology demoed today it would be conceivable for my wife to walk up to the system, the new camera system automatically signs her in with facial recognition, she waves her hand a few times to open up Facebook, uses the speech recognition to post to her wall about the latest episode of the Batchelor, all while last.fm plays her Beyonce/NoDoubt/Neyo/ToriAmos station... oh my god, what have they done."

By the way, I thought you hinted at more Zune/360 integration aside from the video marketplace... anything else done the pipeline?

i was just severely let down by the presser. the motion thing was cool and all, but all the twitter/last.fm/facebook made me go "huh?" not a lot of meat there, and an awful lot of multiplatform stuff

let down?... What exactly do you expect out of E3? They basically hit on every possible aspect of entertainment. Splinter Cell: Convication, Alan Wake, Left4Dead2, Crackdown2, Shadow Complex, Halo: Reach, Halo: ODST, JoyRide, and Forza3 are all 360 exclusives. In fact, the vast majority of the show was all 360 exclusive games, content, and features. Throw in a new motion controller (that works throughout the console UI) with facial & speech recognition, Netflix enhancement and Avatar Part, integration with the two largest social networking platforms (facebook and twitter), customized streaming radio in last.fm, instant-on 1080p video library, sports tv in the console for the UK, and a cornerstone platformer for Sony jumps to the 360 with MGS:R. You can ignore the multiplatform games and consider it a killer presentation.

you don't consider a PC a platform, do you?

frankly i think they're getting silly with the stuff like twitter, facebook, last.fm, etc. i mean there are people saying that the ability to have live parties where your friends can watch the same movie with you at different locations is awesome. who the hell is going to make plans to watch a movie with someone when they're not actually with them? sure, it may be neat that they can do it, but come on...it's not exactly game changing....which is what E3 used to be....big time announcements, not "hey we can twitter"

these are just some of my personal opinions about the presser today, which is just part of the reason why i was let down

Though I guess the focus is currently movies, I know for a fact that if they had this for sporting events, I would use the hell out of it.

Well, Microsoft is launcing the Sky TV sports package in UK on 360 that will allow for the Live Party ability when watching the streamed UK sports network.

I just watched the Natal video. I'm impressed. Obviously Sony and MS have been working hard to milk some of the motion juice that Nintendo pioneered. But its nice to see MS taking it to the next level. This technology takes us one step closer to VR at home. The only thing left is the helmet with a peripheral vision system.

Sony's motion controller (lollypop) was cool too, but much more limited. Its full potential won't be tapped until Sony releases a fully interactive porn game.

Posted this in the 360 thread and thought it was appropriate for here... it is a demo of the silverlight app to be used for step-up streaming HD to the console. This one shows you the download rate, the FPS, and the resolution during the playback. APretty damn smooth, and faster step-up than I imagined it would be. I wish more would jump from flash to silverlight... fuck Adobe.

What's the deal with MS lying/fabricating about market share? Do they not realize that some people are not retards and they'll actually research what they say to be true?

Quote :
" SAN FRANCISCO -(Dow Jones)- Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said Thursday that it has won significant market share in the virtualization software market from market leader VMware Inc. (VMW).

Kevin Turner, Microsoft's chief operating officer, said that the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant had gained 24 points of market share from VMware since it launched its virtualization product, Hyper-V, in 2008.

"We launched our first product in October of this past year. from then till now, we gained 24 points of market share against a very, very formidable competitor," Turner said."

I don't think that an accurate one actually exists, but your COO must've found one somewhere..

You might wanna tell him you launched Hyper-V in June of 08, not October.

I'm guessing he's counting the Hyper-V downloads on individuals computers?

^based on that blog (Really good post btw) it looks like hyper-v was REALLY holding 13% marketshare a year ago. So it wouldn't seem all that far fetched that it's gained another 10% in a year and a full release cycle.

That was a great blog post and there will be some vLovers that will make more like it.

I just don't get why they throw out numbers like it's so damn impressive. This is the third or fourth time in the last couple of months, just with Hyper V.

Movie Maker Live sometime today?
http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/08/19/windows-live-movie-maker-14-2

Quote :
"Today Microsoft will release their newest version of Windows Live Movie Maker. This version allows for greater editing of videos including standard definition (4:3) videos and high definition (16:9) video support.

Windows Live Movie Maker allows for direct upload to both YouTube and Facebook (though plug-ins). Users are also able to burn straight to DVD, play video on high definition (HD) televisions and save in a variety of standard and high definition resolutions - 480i, 720i, 720p and 1080p. Auto Movie allows users to easily create a video automatically in under one minute using selected images, captions, a title and soundtrack to go along with the slides.

The new Movie Maker comes with dozens of polished features over previous versions. Live Movie Maker introduces a smarter storyboard, allowing faster and easier editing than before; audio editing within the storyboard is also available. Detailed animations are included for adjusting videos and images with a range of filters and transitions."

I made the jump from XP to 7 recently. I'm getting used to the new layout for the control panel, where it just presents you with a few choices and you have to drill down to the actual function you want to use. I know Vista had all this stuff, but I only used Vista here and there for a few months when it came out...

They've got it structured similar to web page navigation, with the go back one page and go forward one page arrows across the top left. I'm probably the only one that does this while using a browser, but I'll often right-click and use the back/forward links there instead of moving the mouse all the way to the corner of the screen to do the same thing. It'd be nice if MS enabled this while 'surfing' the control panel.

The backspace key when in those menus works similar to a browser, so I figure they were looking to build on how everyone already knows how to use the internet thing. I'd just like to see them take it a step further, maybe even include View Page Source in a right-click menu

It won't be an issue after I get used to the new layout but right now its... nope, that's not where the Event Log is hidden, back. Nope, back. Nope, back. Nope, back.

^ i hate their approach to the control panel. it's not a fucking web page. it is a series of applets that i should be able to open to change the settings of my computer. if MS would stop trying to dumb everything down and just focus on efficiency of the OS, they would do fine.

People who don't need the control panel dumbed down aren't the people that need help doing something in the control panel. The only thing I don't like about it is when you switch to the list of small icons, it's sorted alphabetically and displayed left to right instead of up/down in columns.

^agreed, should just be a folder view option like everything else in explorer.

BTW, if you want a "details view" you can drag and drop everything to another folder, it creates shortcuts to all the control panel items and you can view them as you please.
