the questions i asked aren't something that could be answered by wikipedia (okay maybe i could've looked up VATS...) but as far as differences between it and oblivion that was a serious question. Oblivion bored the fuck out of me because i had so much going on that i forgot which quests were the main one and i just ended up doing random shit and never getting anywhere. I like tons of sidequests but not so many thats its overwhelming. Pretty sure the wikipedia doesn't have a section dedicated to comparing this to Oblivion.

walls, we wouldn't be making a 19 month year old thread about fallout 3 if we didn't think it was awesome.
if you want a metacritic review, go to metacritic. if you want an oblivion comparison, go to an oblivion fansite. noone here wants to do your research. until then keep your idiotic questions out of the thread. we trying to game here. 10/30/2008 12:41:42 AM |

^ The sidequests in this game feel a ton more engaging than the Oblivion ones. I think part of it is that the NPCs seem to have more variety (and voice actors) than Random Elf #57 who wants you to kill 2 deer for him. 10/30/2008 1:17:34 AM |

really loving the combat in this game so far...both FPS style and VATS. 10/30/2008 2:03:06 AM |
Duncan All American 1442 Posts user info edit post |
It really is a nice balance. VATS is great when I want to target weak points or slow down the action and watch someone's head explode.
The FPS combat is nice when I don't feel like pausing things to use VATS on a cockroach. Also, melee weapons are more fun in real-time.
I'd like to take this moment to express my love for the lock-picking and hacking minigames.
Each one is difficult but fair. There doesn't seem to be any random impossible crap like the lock-picking in Oblivion. The hacking beats Bioshock's "hacking" for sure. 10/30/2008 2:23:40 AM |

Well I finally got to install this at about 11 last night, and figured I would play for an hour or so before bed.
Well now it's 6 am, and the only reason I'm not still playing is I just had my first CTD (hopefully they aren't too common).
This game is great. Saying it's "Oblivion with guns" is an oversimplification, it's used as an insult by hardcore fallout fans of course, but there really are a lot of similarities.
So rather than saying it's "Oblivion with guns" I think it's more like "Everything Oblivion should have been, set in the Fallout universe" 10/30/2008 6:21:43 AM |

I have been really good in this game so far. I have good Karma, I was at very good, but I did something stupid (hacked a terminal and picked a lock) just to get practice of doing it. Its SO much incentive to be Bad in this game, and not enough, at least for right now, incentive to do good.

You can gain infinite XP if your speech skill is high enough.(My speech was about 30 at the time). Go to town called "Big Town" located north of Vault 101.If you spoke with a girl named Bittercup she should tell you about her dating exploits. After speaking with her, go into the house marked "Common House" and speak to a man named Pappy. There should be a speech skill dialogue option that says "You came here with Bittercup, right?" You will get XP every time you click it. (I got 6XP with each click). Continue to do this and you can rack up XP in mere seconds. Bethesda has not yet patched this glitch.

Without the 'power-ups' to ease hacking or the auto-hack tool in BioShock, it can be harder, way harder in fact than the hacking in FO3. However, the hacking in FO3 is awesome in that you don't feel pressured by time, and you actually have to think quite a bit more, rather than randomly flipping tiles that may or may not uncover a piece of the maze that you need to complete the hack. 10/30/2008 9:09:09 AM |

I assumed this would be the case so I created my first character with that in mind. Stealth-Black Widow-Assassin type deal. I'm right at level 4 right now so I'm just getting into things. I'm working on the Megaton side quests right now, trying to determine what I want to finish before moving on to the next area.

methods to play game:
1) good guy with guns (I think most people default to this at first.. I know I do) 2) stealthy thief 3) strong melee (fun when combined with low intelligence) 4) sniper 5) morally bankrupt childkiller
I think I might go with #2/#4 combo after I finish the game as #1 10/30/2008 10:15:27 AM |

But that felt too much like work so I just started playing naturally, finding things as I go, and its 10 times more fun that way 10/30/2008 11:42:11 AM |

I'm glad to see that they still provide plenty of ways to talk out of many situations; that always made the game fun for me. That, and once I picked up a combat shotgun, crawling through the subway isn't nearly as scary anymore.

Has anyone done anything especially awesome with the Black Widow or Lady Killer perk? The only place I've seen an extra dialogue option was with Tenpenny's good in Megaton. It has yet to result in anything cool.
Also, what perks have you picked up that are worth getting/not worth getting?

I upped my agility and used the swift learner perk twice I think... the first four levels of perks are pretty vanilla 10/30/2008 1:14:27 PM |
AndyMac All American 31922 Posts user info edit post |
I think unless you are just straight up role playing, most of the skill points based perks (i.e. 5 to science and medicine) aren't worth it.
Black widow is definitely worth it as a female, 10% extra damage on like 75% of the humans? yes please.
Intense training is also quite good.
At level 3 you should take Educated. 3 extra skill points per level is FTW. Comprehension may be good, there do seem to be a lot of books out there, but I'm not so sure right now. Iron fist is good for unarmed, child at heart looks like it may be alright.
Gunslinger and/or commando looks good, but I don't know how much of an accuracy boost they are talking about. Toughness is a great early game perk at level 6, it nearly doubles your (or at least my) armor class at that level. But who knows, with power armor it may become useless.
All of the level 8 perks seem pretty good, except maybe size matters.
Avoid here and now. It may seem tempting to gain 2 levels at once, but perks are one of the biggest reasons to level, and there's always more experience points out there.

I think Swift learner is a mistake
You get to level 20 faster, but once you get there that perk becomes useless
If you play the game all the way through, you should to level 20 anyway
So it makes more sense to get a perk that will still be relevant during the end game 10/30/2008 1:24:11 PM |
Crede All American 7339 Posts user info edit post |
you level faster, period, which means you get skill points sooner in the game which means you'll probably have an easier time getting to the end game
I only got swift learner this goround... I wouldn't get it when I'm playing the game the second time around

Basically, I spoke with Tenpenny's goon in Megaton, promised to carry out his job for him, turned him over to the sheriff, and then killed him when the bust went sour. So far, I've had two hit attempts on me. Its how I got my combat shotgun.
I got ladykiller; it's okay, but I've only had two opportunities to use it so far (for dialogue purposes... plenty of dead female raider bodies litter the wasteland).10/30/2008 3:45:06 PM |

Repair is great, I wish had I realized how it worked sooner. I've been pumping points into my repair skill but never figured out how to repair my own shit until last night. Up until then I've been throwing away caps by selling weapons/armor to the store in Megaton and then turning around and paying her to repair my stuff. Now that I've started repairing my own weapons I am doing more damage, able to carry more (since I'm now toting around 1 Hunting Rifle instead of 5...) and I have more money. I wonder how many other aspects of the game I don't understand...
Also, where is Tenpenny's tower? I messed up the event with Mr. Burke but I want to go scavenging
