Seems like a good deal to me. I was always torn on p232s because I love the gun, but dislike the cartidge.

That's a pretty good deal for new. Nothinig wrong with blued, but if you carry concealed then you have to be careful of your body sweat making the thing rust. You'd want a holster that kept a piece of leather between you and all parts of the gun. The 232 is nice and slim and would carry much much better than the 229 you were talking about.
If you typically think highly of the 40S&W then you may be under impressed by the little 380. I wouldn't feel bad about using a 380 though. The same as all cartridges, buy quality ammo. In 380 you want to buy the heavier bullets because it won't make enough velocity to compensate for the lack of weight. All the quality stuff will penetrate almost as good as the bigger calibers. Gelatin tests have shown 10-14" with HP and 20-24"+ with FMJ
In a defensive handgun I'd want good consistent penetration first. Bigger holes are just gravy. 1/17/2008 5:06:35 PM |

Anyone else go to the Dixie Gun and Knife Classic? Turnout on Saturday seemed pretty good for the weather. Dad picked up a Ruger P95 new for $360. I'm still looking at a Ruger GP100 in 4". It would be a nice all around handgun. The CZ 75 and Beretta Cougar I saw at the show also felt really nice in my hand.
The feel of cold steel in the hand is great indeed. 1/20/2008 10:28:30 PM |

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST
A few months ago I ordered a box of .475" Speer Gold Dot SP bullets for my 480 Ruger and they cost $14/50 bullets. I just ordered another box and they cost damn $20.
Midwayusa had blemished 475 bullets for $13 and now those are more expensive than the gold dots. What the hell is wrong with bullet prices? Loaded ammo prices are up a few dollars. Ok. I can understand. Loaded ammo comes with new cases and brass costs money, fair enough. But bullets going up 43%?! Fucking ridiculous. Cast bullet prices are up too, but the cost of lead isn't going up as much as the cost of brass or copper.
The 475 Hornady XTPs are $33/50. At that rate it's cheaper to just buy factory loaded ammo.

ammo prices have jumped up quite a bit recently and they show no signs of slowing.
a 100 box of .40 S&W at wal-mart was $18 a few months ago, now it's over $21.
i'm none too pleased.
where can i get a good deal on a ruger mark III hunter 22/45 pistol with 6 7/8" fluted barrel? gunbroker? gunshow? since there isn't recoil to speak of, the polymer grips should be as good as the stainless, right?
does anyone own one? does the chamber indicator, key lock or the magazine not dropping free annoy you?
i'm leaning towards the stainless.

I have the blued 5.5" heavy barrel with adjustable sights. One thing to note, many don't like how skinny the 22/45 grips are. They make the 22/45 to have the same frame dimensions as a 1911, and it's close. But the molded grips aren't thick enough to really feel like a 1911.
Maintenance...taking it apart in theory isn't hard. The MKIIs are even simpler because they don't have a magazine disconnect. The real pain in the ass is trying to get the upper off of the grip frame. I have to use a hammer to separate mine because the grip frame lug fits so damn tight into the upper. From what I read most people don't have as much trouble taking it apart as I do. That's fine, I like tight guns. You don't need to do that often though. If you can get the bolt out then you can do regular cleaning.

$681.99 w/night sights
$12.99 for a box of 50 remington target rounds $22.99 for a box of 50 Speer Gold Dot HP
out the door w/tax $766.43
now I'm just waiting on my $100 rebate from sig, which makes the deal even sweeter!
they had the DAK model as well for the same price but I like the SA/DA version a tick better just being able to manually cock the hammer when there's already a round in the chamber for the lighter trigger pull (more accurate to me) makes it more user friendly for both me and the wife.
BTW they still had the D&E there for 599

The rebate is for LE, EMS, FD and other gov't personnel; basically a first responder rebate program. They have some info on their website.
The wife handles the P85 9mm very well, and right now that's "her" gun until her S&W comes in. She is very curious as to how the P229 shoots, and as is a requirement for me and her is that she's comfortable and familiar with anything we own outside of hunting rifles. She's a good shot with a shotgun too, she comes from a long line of gun owners so she's been around it and used to it for all her life. 1/26/2008 1:19:11 AM |

all this talk of ammo prices has reignited my own need to start looking into doing this
especially since there is a 300 yard range, 5 min from my place and the 700p has been brought out of the case more and more frequently
but....boxes of ammo normally runs between $50-70
not that im blowing through multiple boxes a day, but i do like to fire the rifle enough to increase my performance and to ensure that im shooting the same in the field as i do at the range
so...reloading anyone? good guide book? how much should i look into spending for a decent but bare bones set up? 1/26/2008 2:03:01 AM |

I don't reload, I have thought about it but I mainly shoot 7.62x39 in my SKS and .22LR in my Savage Mark II. When I finally get my GP100, I might consider loading pistol ammo. As for a good reloading guide, I suggest what was suggested to me, Lyman's reloading guide. It's pretty cheap and is a good guide to reloading, I read all the chapters on reloading already and it'd very informative. You can start reloading for very cheap if you get a Lee setup, which has everything you need except consumables and dies for $95.
I think you might be able to go cheaper than that if you get a Lee hand loading press. At any rate, MidwayUSA is pretty cheap to order through.

I started out with a lee kit, it worked well, get the carbide dies though. the lube that comes with it is shit, midway has their own that works great. the lee primer tool is good, the power dippers work well for pistol ammo. the single stage press is slow as hell though, and it pissed me off so much to watch someone blast off a whole mag of my carefully loaded ammo and say "that was fun". I didnt share much after that. I might would add a digital scale to the setup, i never could get the lee powder thrower to give the same charge twice, so you could set it low and then trickle the rest of the charge onto the scale. It is the heat for rifle ammo, and cuts your cost to a point of being silly. necksizing centerfire cases+ exact charges = tiny groups. Of course a dillon progressive will make ammo like its going out of style, but it costs alot more. some people like the lee progressives while other hate them.I never got past the single stage. the lee shotgun reloaders were nifty as well, we loaded a ton of ammo with two of them back in the day. I still have all my gear back home for when I have time to shoot again. Good luck! the lee book is good enough for normal calibers and bullet weights and has all the instructios you need.

I've also heard that Imperial Sizing Wax is the best case lube for sizing dies. When it comes to sizing though, the carbide dies will make it a whole lot harder to stick a case. 1/26/2008 10:30:37 PM |

I reload. You can't afford to shoot most ammo unless you reload, especially since prices went up.
LEE equipment is cheap and works well. I would suggest getting the LEE Classic Cast if you want a single stage or the Classic Turret if you want to go a little faster. The cheaper LEE single stage is flimsy compared to the Classic Casts. The cheaper one will work fine for pistols, but if you want accurate rifle ammo then the stiffer press will work better.
If I could do it again I'd get the turret. Single stage is a pain in the ass when you want to reload high volume. Progressives are realllllly fast, but $texas.
Only dies for straightwalled catridges come in carbide, and carbide is definately the way to go. LEE carbide die sets are only $25-35. LEE lube sucks too. If you put too much on then you get dented cases. If you don't use enough then you get stuck cases. I use the RCBS spray on stuff for rifle brass.
If you have the time then reloading is the way to go. I bought blemished 30 cal 150 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips for $28 (2 boxes of 50). The weight is consistent and you can't tell how they're blemished. Primers $3 Powder for 100 rounds of 308 Win is ~$15 Total=$46 for 100 rounds of 308 That's less than the price of two 20 round boxes of ballistic tips. 1/27/2008 6:28:41 PM |

^^They buy in buuuuuuuuuuuuulk.
Many people believe the guns and ammo walmart sells is poor quality. It's not. They can sell it cheaper because they can move high volumes. They don't rely on gun and ammo sales to make a profit. They rely on customers buying tons of other junk at the store. Carying guns and ammo is just one way to keep the customers coming.
^The regular gun guy at my walmart said Fed and CCI jacked their prices up Jan 15th. At xmas I was buying 45acp CCI Blazer Brass for $12.88 a box...it's now $14.88.
As a result I've bought some LEE dies for 45acp. 250 185gr Sierra JHPs are only $33 at midway. I got a box of those too. Those bullets + primers + powder should end up costing $18 per 100 rounds. Take note if you're thinking about reloading. Winchester value packs for 45acp (the cheapest you can buy) are $28 per 100.

I've started on a refinishing project (only in the prep phase) on my recently acquired Rem 870 Express. I've seen many 870 Expresses with surface rust on the (what looks like) bead blasted black oxide finish. The factory finish should be a good base for KG Gunkote, so I'm not doing any prep other than cleaning. It won't be anything special, just a black 870. I'll post pics when done anyway.
After the 870 I'm going to do a light melt on my RIA 1911, blend some parts, and do the slide in matte black Gunkote and the fram and small parts in Gunkote's "satin stainless" finish. That will be a loooong process... 1/28/2008 10:53:28 PM |
