Crystal Castles---s/t (2008)

hxxp://www.mediafire.com/?7njszgdzksb

not sure if there are any fans here, but it was getting a lot of early hype and leaked--- kind of hit or miss for me... and when they miss, they miss badly, lol.

^^

easily in my top five groups of all time. I'd rather have them on permanent hiatus than broken up. Gave me hope they would at least tour again.

According to Pitchfork the GYBE story was a misquote and they haven't officially broken-up.

Quote :
"Godspeed You! Black Emperor-- now there's a great band we haven't heard from in awhile. The Canadian collective has been on "indefinite hiatus" for the past five-or-so years. Members of the band have kept busy with various musical projects since then, the most high-profile being Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La-Band, which features Godspeed members Efrim Menuck, Thierry Amar, and Sophie Trudeau.

Over the weekend, GY!BE popped back up on our radar, thanks to a Drowned in Sound interview with Menuck. The interview was in support of the excellent new Silver Mt. Zion album, 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons, which comes out March 25 on Constellation. (The band will tour this spring; see below for dates.)

In the interview, Menuck commented on the political and personal factors that lead to Godspeed You! Black Emperor's hiatus, including frustrations brought on by the war in Iraq. Drowned in Sound titled their story "Godspeed You! Black Emperor: Iraq war made it impossible to continue". Word spread quickly across the internet that the band had finally, officially, called it quits, and the Iraq war was the reason.

But the truth isn't that cut-and-dry.

Here's what Drowned in Sound quotes Menuck as saying (brackets theirs):

"The last American tour that Godspeed did was in the run up to the current war in Iraq. For what Godspeed did, it was very difficult for us to work out a way for us to communicate directly with the audience about what was going on. We would talk to people after the shows, or we could make announcements from the stage but so much what Godspeed was, was one-way communication. And I had an existential freak-out about that. That those tactics aren't valid anymore. People didn't need a rock band pointing in the direction of [how the world was at that point]. Maybe what they needed is some clumsy words, a presentation that was a little more human."

"On a personal level I now find [Godspeed You! Black Emperor] to be inappropriate [to do]. There's a complicated back story. I reached a point whereby I was no longer willing to contribute to the steering of the ship; it was like, 'Okay now, someone else point the direction, I love all of you, but I need to ride shotgun for a while'. I think that bands do have a short shelf life... they should be able to ply their trade 'til they no longer want to."

It's true-- it can be very difficult to stay in any band for any length of time, let alone one deeply committed to its political beliefs that was once suspected by police of being terrorists. But Menuck never actually came out and said that Godspeed You! Black Emperor are completely over.

When contacted by Pitchfork, Menuck gave the following statement via Silver Mt. Zion's publicist:

"The Drowned in Sound thing is a misquote, I'm in the middle of dealing with it now. It's true, Godspeed hasn't existed for years, we've been on permanent hiatus since 2002. If and when we do call it quits permanently, it won't be because of the Iraq war." "

ETA--- also, I'm frustrated as hell b/c reviews are popping everywhere for the Gutter Twins record, and I'm not finding the leak anywhere.

I saw this and thought I would post it.

I know that my copy of the Black Kids EP only has 4 tracks, but apparently there was an 8 track issue of it.

Here is the 8 track version of wizard of ahhhhs.

hxxp://www.megaupload.com/?d=QY3XLIXY

1. Hit The Heartbreaks
2. I'm Not Going To Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance
3. Listen To Your Body Tonight
4. Designs On AKA You
5. I Wanna Be Your Limousine
6. Hurricane Jane
7. Love Me Already
8. I've Underestimated My Charm (Again)

^ I think they're touring most of the year, and I remember reading that they're going to release a re-recorded version of "I'm not gonna teach your boyfriend how to dance..." in April of this year, so I'm not quite sure what they're doing.

They may release a full length with those ^^ 8 tracks and 4 more or something like that. Especially since most people have only heard the 4 track version of Wizard of Ahhhs. I'm not sure how wise of a choice that would be, but I could see them doing that to appease the label they just signed to.

That's all speculation on my part, though.

Also, I'm about half way thru this, and I'm liking this a lot.

It's very 60's in everything from the lyrics and vocals to the arrangements--- I'm a sucker for that shit.

Some notable EDM releases so far. Available on tons of blogs if you want to check them out:

Funk D'Void - Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi Vol 4
A really deep blend of minimal and tech-house songs. Has great flow and mixing.

Fabric 38 - Mixed by M.A.N.D.Y.
Another good mix of minimal and tech-house. The tracklist in particular stands out on this one.

Ticon - [2am]
Trance heavily influenced with electro and psy elements. Standout tracks are "1987" and "Less Is More", the rest not so much.
Listen: http://www.myspace.com/ticonmusic

Sander van Doorn - Supernaturalistic
This album is normally described as "composed with the club in mind", heavily bass driven minimal/techno/trance.
Apple http://youtube.com/watch?v=H-8l4ok_V9U

Psy Trance Euphoria - Mixed by John 00 Fleming
Will be released Feb 19. One of my most anticipated releases, from one of the foremost trance DJ's John 00 Fleming. A collection of progressive trance with psy elements. Gorgeous first single:
Vibrasphere - Autumn Lights http://media.putfile.com/Vibrasphere---Autumn-Lights

Singles wise one of my favorites has been Apparat - Arcadia (Telefon Tel Aviv Remix)
Listen: http://www.last.fm/music/Apparat/_/Arcadia+%28Telefon+Tel+Aviv+remix%29

For non-edm, I have really liked the Vampire Weekend album linked in this thread.

The first half of the Xiu Xiu album is phenomenal. Jamie and gang have another great cover too. But what happen after Black Keyboard?! I thought this was going to be my first Xiu Xiu album that I loved from start to finish. "No Friend Oh!" is the front runner for song of the year. Awesome use of brass in said song and "Under Pressure."

i really cannot get into their full length at all though. they really fucked up their two best songs when they re-recorded them("Time to Pretend" and "Kids")... if i can find it, i will upload it so you can hear their older stuff

I have no clue if it's been mentioned before or if I have but M83's new album Saturdays = Youth comes out in April. Stream Couleurs on his myspace page http://www.myspace.com/m83. Awesome song btw.

01 You, Appearing
02 Kim & Jessie
03 Skin of the Night
04 Graveyard Girl
05 Couleurs
06 Up!
07 We Own the Sky
08 Highway of Endless Dreams
09 Too Late
10 Dark Moves of Love
11 Midnight Souls Still Remain

We should also take bets on how long that last track will be. I'm going with 11:38.

Dearest dearest...

So today on this cold january afternoon I spend the last of a good few weeks of hard listening
mixing and producing all the audio from the shepherds bush empire finale from last month for a television special to be premiered on virgin television special very soon and then an extended version to be turned into my first DVD later in the year. The film has been lovingly shot and directed by the photographer brantley gutierrez who I worked with alot last year on my USA tour.

I opened him up to my early morning ramblings in my messy christmas flat, playing the piano
and getting ready for the final last two shows of the epic magic position tour of 2007.

I have also been secretly working away, crafting away on the new album too in the sleepy black and amber of these long coid winter nights. loading up my old laptops, generating beats and writing, typing nonstop at the piano keys and computer keys, trying to communicate some of the journeys, misadventures and experiences from the last couple of years since The Magic Position was completed. Slowly recovering and returning to a more regular private rhythm of life. Trying to remember how to live outside of hotels and six different airports each week is alot more confusing and tricky than I expected but life is showing me marvels and slowly vitality, inspiration and productivity is returning to my days and nights.

I send love, life and all the best from London to you wherever or however on this planet you may be. Thanks for all being out there, for your support as I get all my new work and vision together for you.

til the bluebells are ringing..

yours x patrick"

REM are putting up a short video every day for, you guessed it, 90 nights in the run-up to Accelerate. I highly recommend watching nights 53 and 54 which contain sound clips from 'Hollow man' which I've fallen in love with already.
