"I think we may be better off with McCauley matched up with Hansbrough and Hickson providing weak side help. I expect them to play a lot of point zone against us, so we need to do well working the ball around for gaps in the zone and open shots."

I agree. Hickson leaves his feet too much trying to go for a block for him to be effective on defense against Hansbrough. Hansbrough would head fake the shit out of Hickson every time down the court and Hickson would probably foul out with 5 minutes left in the game. McCauley keeps his feet and would be effective in standing Hansbrough up allowing Hickson to come over for the block.

get that shit out of here chembob

Quote :
"Chip Alexander, Staff Writer
Whether after a missed shot or free throw, a basket or turnover, N.C. State forward Brandon Costner said the Wolfpack's strategy for Saturday will be pretty simple against top-ranked North Carolina.
Run like heck back, Costner said.

Costner used a bit stronger language, but you get the idea. Against Carolina, transition defense can't just be some pregame talking point or a sometime thing. It must be a constant and conscious effort from the opening jump ball to the final buzzer, either run back on defense or risk being run out of the gym.

Or in the Pack's case Saturday, the Smith Center in Chapel Hill.

"That's the biggest part -- transition defense," Costner said. "Run back as fast as you can and match up with your man before they get an opportunity to get into their early offense."

And if not?

"Then it might be a long night," Costner said.

Many teams have had long outings against the Tar Heels (16-0, 1-0 ACC), who are averaging 92.1 points a game. The Heels try to get the ball to point guard Ty Lawson quickly and let the foot race begin to the other end.

"That's a huge concern," NCSU coach Sidney Lowe said. "That's where we really have to be sharp and strong -- not to allow them to get out and get easy baskets.

"They do that very well. And their wings run so well. They really get out and run and attack, so we certainly have to try to limit their easy baskets. We've got to make sure we get guys back and protect and then try to play solid defense in the half-court and force them to execute against us."

The Pack (11-3) has lost starting point guard Farnold Degand to a season-ending knee injury. Junior guard Courtney Fells has a sprained right ankle and is questionable for Saturday, which means State could be without its two quickest players as it begins ACC play.

While the Pack has limited opponents to 37.7 percent shooting and been effective with its half-court man-to-man defense, its transition defense has been spotty at times. In the ACC/Big Ten Challenge game, Michigan State repeatedly beat State down court en route to a 81-58 rout.

The Tar Heels make the Spartans look like plodders.

"They have more speed than anyone," Valparaiso coach Homer Drew said.

The Heels dismantled Valpo 90-58 late last month at the Smith Center with center Tyler Hansbrough scoring 23 points and forward Danny Green adding 20. Lawson was credited with four assists but was tough to contain in transition, Drew said.

"There were a couple of times Lawson would get the ball and we'd be even with him," Drew said. "Then, just like that, we'd be two steps behind him.

"Hansbrough runs well. He's a fast big guy. They just utilize their speed so well."

How to negate it?

"If you find out anything, let me know," Drew said, laughing.

Though sprinting back is essential to sound transition defense, so is communication. Often, a quick guard or athletic forward may be assigned to pick up the man with the ball -- Lawson -- while the other guard runs back to the lane to be a defensive quarterback as the play flows down court.

"If you can get three players back, you can form a triangle [defensively] to protect the basket," Drew said. "If four get back, you have a box formation to protect."

While teams defend inside/out in transition, it's also imperative to locate the good perimeter shooters. A well-run break can lead to an open 3-pointer.

"Against a VMI, you may not guard well and they get a quick, open 3," UNC-Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach said. "They miss it and it doesn't hurt you. Do it against Carolina, they make it and it does hurt you."

A key against UNC is to quickly get in front of physical and elusive Lawson.

"I know every team is going to bring somebody up to try to stop me, slow me down," Lawson said. "I've just got to keep pushing it, because if I don't push it, the team's going to stop running and slow down. That's not how we want to play."

Against Clemson on Sunday, Hansbrough once inbounded to Lawson as he crossed from left to right in front of Hansbrough. Lawson then fired a bullet pass to Wayne Ellington as he streaked down the right wing.

Bing, bang, layup.

"Wayne's running like crazy right now ... getting wide-open layups, running the lanes," Lawson said. "And we're trying to get everyone else like that. If everyone does that, we'll be one team that is hard to stop."

Biedenbach, whose Bulldogs lost 93-81 to the Heels, likens Lawson to former Wake Forest star Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues.

"Lawson keeps pushing it and they keep constant pressure on your defense," he said. "They wear you down. They run as well as anyone I've seen."

Or as Costner might say, run like heck.

Ah it's that time again. The time when two completely different schools and completely different fans face off and allow their hatred for each other to be settled on the hardwood. In one corner we have the elitist downright snobbish university clad in a sissy, pastel blue, whose fans are as fairweather as they come. In the other corner we have the true school of the people that was created to correct the other's mistakes in providing practical knowledge in the sciences and engineering. Their fans are devoted, passionate, and sometimes downright maniacal. Clad in red, when they say they bleed their school's colors, they mean it.

One school's alumni write opinion pieces in the local town paper, act as a cancer on society and help file frivolous lawsuits, and think of themselves as the elite of society b/c they majored in some hippy liberal arts crap like Art History yet work as the manager of your local McDonald's. The other school's alumni designs the state's infrastructure, electrical systems, airplanes, and engines. They look over and run the nuclear power plants that provides power to areas across the nation. They help clothe and feed society. They have cutting edge scientific breakthroughs. They come up with new lighter yet stronger materials that help keep fire fighters safe. They even win the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change as well as their desire to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change (see Dr. Rajendra Kumar Pachauri).

One school's team is represented by a sheep. The other's is represented by a pack of wolves. Well wolves eat sheep. All of this results in the rivalry simply known as State-Carolina

Seriously though we're probably going to get destroyed on Saturday.

Status of Pack's Fells, Horner Still Uncertain
04_presb_ncsu.jpg

Posted: 34 minutes ago
Updated: 33 minutes ago

Whether N.C. State's Courtney Fells and Dennis Horner will play or not remained uncertain on Friday, Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe said.

Both have ankle injuries and their absence would significantly affect State's depth against the Tar Heels. The two teams play Saturday at noon in Chapel Hill.

Fells, a Wolfpack starter, turned his ankle Wednesday night in a victory over N.C. Central. He is one of the Pack's best defenders and would be matched up on Wayne Ellington if healthy.

WRAL.com will be filing more information on the State-Carolina game throughout the day

Eh, I'm not too big on the "making fun of the queers", seeing as how I have a few friends that are gay. I'd be lying if I said I had never told a gay UNC joke though. I still don't think grown men should be wearing pastels though.

Why? I have some pastel colored dress shirts I wear to the office from time to time... especially in summer. They are comfortable and not your plain old white color...

Honestly, the gay jokes are just annoying. These guys pull more trim than nearly anyone of us on here... It's just something to cling to when we realize we just aren't on their level in basketball yet... Here is hoping we get there and we can talk shit about how we dominate thier asses ON the court...

^^^^ UNC has a very good law school and solid b-school as well...

^ The gay jokes, for me, aren't about the colors they wear. It's becuase of the bleeding liberal hippie douchebags that go to UNC (Not to mention Dante Calabria, Pat Sullivan, and numerous other former UNC guys)

And I wear pastel colors all the time. That said, they should never be on a football uniform.

Ah, who am I kidding... it's about the colors too. Screw everything about em'

the fact is, those liberal.. tree hugging smartasses to the north, are nothing but socialists. they are inbreeds. most of their males turn out gay but they have a nice female population. it's simply a gateway to the nba for a couple players a year. the real men down here that grow up without a silver spoon fight tough and earn their right to call themselves men. maybe that's why they get their nails done less than the tarholes.

CHAPEL HILL -- UNC basketball coach Roy Williams is being treated for a laceration on his head. It is not expected to effect him coaching Saturday's game.

University officials tell Eyewitness News Williams tripped over a cord in his office shortly before his weekly news conference.
He was unable to attend the news conference and as a result it was canceled.

All this talk takes me back to last year, my senior year, and getting front row sideline seats to the UNC game. Best NCSU moment I have ever had...Ben's MJ style dunk, Costner's nuts-in-your-face dunk, Fells "dunk with authority", Gavin's 180, rushing the court...almost brings tears to my eyes. With that said...here's to an upgrade from last year!

GO PACK!!!

Here's a story with a little bit more info on what exactly happened.

http://www.charlotte.com/sports_breaking/story/441848.html

UNC's Williams cuts head in office fall
KEN TYSIAC
ktysiac@charlotteobserver.com

North Carolina coach Roy Williams missed his scheduled weekly news conference Friday after tripping and suffering a cut on his head in his office.

Team spokesman Steve Kirschner said Williams was seeking medical attention Friday afternoon and is expected to coach the team Saturday against N.C. State

"He was on his feet unaided, but he was bleeding," Kirschner said.

Kirschner said Williams' fall was not related to his chronic vertigo condition, his back problem or the flu. Williams tripped over a cord in his office and hit the top of his head on the corner of a wall.

Williams told Kirschner he will be available to talk to reporters after practice Friday evening.

So he's just plain clumsy I guess. I wonder if Jimmy Dykes or whoever's covering our game will talk about how bad of a competitor Roy is b/c he coached with a cut on his head.

However, the Super Bowl is on my birthday, so State can beat the Patriots.
