The rookie big man then calmly dropped a pair, putting the Pack ahead to stay." |

Quote : | "Given that Javi's the best we're going to get out of pg this year, he is improving and was pretty clutch on the fts today. Of course he still made dumb freshman mistakes, but his contributions are increasing every game, and Marques still can't seem to get anything going. Eventually he(Javi) should be able to use his size and speed to his advantage with a lot of scrappy steals and drawing bump fouls." |
I still don't see it. Both played really well in this game but both still need a lot of work. I honestly do not see how you can say Javi is better than Marques right now. I keep watching each game with a close eye and Marques is still way better on defense than Javi. And plus Javi has size? He is possibly the smallest player in the ACC.1/27/2008 11:43:08 PM |

I think you have Javi and Johnson confused.
Javi looked like he was much more comfortable dribbling the basketball yesterday. He was penetrating, not getting ripped, and he is a better defender. He has really quick hands and he's a little bit quicker in general.
They're both getting better, but Javi has played much better than Johnson in the past 3 games. 1/27/2008 11:52:14 PM |
statered All American 2298 Posts user info edit post |
^^ In man to man defense Javi's height/weight definitely leave something to be desired. He either gets bumped out of the way or shot over; however, in a zone, Javi's quick hands can help create numerous turnovers for the other team. If you've really been watching the games with a close eye, you would have seen that too. Marques is decent on defense, but he isn't going to shut his man down like some of the better defenders in the conference are capable of doing. Also, Johnson has the worst ball-handling abilities of any acc pg I've ever seen. He has no ability to create on his own and none of our opponents have even appeared to respect the possibility that he may be able to drive to the basket or hit an open shot. Until he shows that he can do either of these things, we'll be playing 4 on 5 on the offensive end of the court.

Singletary/Rice are small but both have great hops and speed. Causey/Douglas just seemed to score more easily on Javi than Marques. I mean neither will be confused with Gary Payton. Both are playing better and I have been ragging them less but let's face it, they are the key to every single game. 1/27/2008 11:59:21 PM |
wolfAApack All American 9980 Posts user info edit post |
Javi just has to close out his man quicker. You cant shoot over anyone who is in your grill when you get the ball. He's not a bad defender. He's not great, but he's also a freshman.
Thats the thing. If anyone gets a pass this year, its those 2 point guards. Costner does not get a pass. Gavin, fells, mccauley, anyone who played last year doesnt get a pass, but these 2 deserve one. At least until the second half of acc play.

I feel more comfortable with Javi than marques right now. Just watching marques dribble makes me queasy. I think javi will do nothing but get better as he gets more comfortable, more confidence, and realizes what ACC play requires of him. I like his spunk....his scrappiness 1/28/2008 12:59:23 AM |

Just hit/throw the ball off the opposing team before every possession so we can sub johnson on defense and javi on offense. 1/28/2008 1:19:58 AM |
