i agree, this could point to gang relations. when i was in richmond we had a cop from the gang squad come to my work and she gave a pretty graphic presentation. i can't remember their colors and can't tell what he's wearing, but that could be some evidence towards that gang element.

My guess is a botched robbery of some sort. I doubt he was just going after her cash, but more than likely he wanted her entire wallet and her car.
