Can't say I know anything first hand about any of our picks, but from what I've read it sounds like a pretty good draft. Seems that we may have a steal with Dalpe at 45.

I don't think we should trade him either, but if trading him were the only way we could have a passable defense next season, would you still feel the same way?

i would have a hard time trading Justin Williams for any defender unless they were in the top 5.

Chara
Phaneuf
Pronger
Zubov
Rafalski

Those guys come to mind however it would still be extremely difficult because I look at Justin Williams as part of the future of the Canes offense. We need to keep young GOOD talent on our offensive lines - key word YOUNG

I'm not feeling so confident anymore about getting a big name in a trade, so fuck it. Send Ruutu ( ) to Vancouver for Lukas Krajicek, sign Liles on the open market, re-sign Hordichuk, LaRose, and Seidenberg, and get Tanabe off the books by retirement or long time injury list or whatever you can do. I think we'd be looking at a payroll of slightly over $49 million, which may still be more than Karmanos is willing to spend, but hopefully he will go that high.

Staal / Cole / Samsonov
Brind'Amour / Whitney / Williams
Cullen / Walker / Eaves
Sutter / Hordichuk / LaRose
Extra: Hamilton

Gleason / Liles
Corvo / Kaberle
Krajicek / Wallin
Extra: Seidenberg

Ward
Leighton

look for the habs to sign liles and sundin

supposedly the wings just want to add a few small pieces, so no sundin signing there

^^ i think there are only 2 players in the entire NHL that the wings would trade lidstrom for

there's no way they wouldnt take ovechkin or crosby for him

i just didnt buy rounds 3 and 4 that year, b/c they were a 300 and 400% increase over reg. season prices in my section. I'm still pissed at myself for not buying them.

But, oh well, I went to Glenwood and celebrated there

watched the NHL scouting combines tonight on the NHL network. It was pretty impressive/interesting to see what all goes on there.

They had a brief interview with Canes draftee Zac Dalpe regarding the overall process

"OTTAWA — Zac Dalpe said he plans to sleep in his Carolina Hurricanes jersey for a few nights after being selected in the second round of the NHL entry draft Saturday.

But the next jersey Dalpe chooses to wear is of greater interest to fans of the Plymouth Whalers and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

Dalpe, from Paris, Ontario, reiterated Saturday his intent to play next season for Ohio State, even though the Whalers drafted him in the second round of last month's Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection. The Whalers and Hurricanes are owned by Detroit businessman Peter Karmanos Jr.

"I think I've made my decision," Dalpe said. "I'm a pretty loyal guy. I think I'm going to stick to the Ohio State route and go from there and see where it takes me."

Whalers coach Greg Stefan, who also was at the draft, said he would talk to Dalpe again but not pressure him. "Carolina does not draft players for their junior team," Stefan said. "It was just a coincidence. Who knows how it's going to work out? We think it's in his best interest to play for us, if he wants to."

Stefan said Dalpe was rated 16th overall by the Hurricanes.

Told that Dalpe said he still intended to go to Ohio State, Stefan said: “I’m happy for him being drafted. I’m happy to get him in the Carolina organization. He’s going to do what he wants to. It’s up to him. We got a very good team. We need someone to center Chris Terry, one of the top players in the OHL. We think it’ll be a good fit there.

“But I respect the family. I respect the young man and the Carolina Hurricanes.”

The Whalers drafted Dalpe despite his commitment to Ohio State because they knew they had a deep team and weren’t banking on the second-round pick playing right away.

The Whalers will maintain Dalpe’s rights, so he always could go to Ohio State and then decide to leave school and instead play in the OHL. Ohio State coach John Markell called Dalpe “a prize recruit.”

Markell was not thrilled that the Hurricanes selected Dalpe. He told a reporter from the Columbus Dispatch on Saturday that the Hurricanes and Whalers were already trying to talk Dalpe out of going to Ohio State.

“You have to be happy for the kid that he got drafted pretty high up in a really good draft but this is going to be difficult for him,” Markell said. “It makes it tough on him.

Going to prospect camp, he’s going to have to deal with it. They’re the only team in
the league that does that. Most NHL teams wouldn’t do that, but they’ve chosen to do it.

“What’s it going to do to him if they’re constantly interfering. He’s told us he’s coming. He’s put all this time and effort in and they want it to change with the stroke of a pen.

I just want him to be able to do what he wants, go where he wants, and to know that he can develop at our school.

“I know Pete. Business is business. He’s going to do what’s best for his business, but it’s upsetting.”"

I'm sorry but the Hurricanes are not the only fucking team in the NHL to promote negotiations with a premier prospect. What a bunch of crap. That guy is just pissed that he might lose his star player.

I'd say this is a little different. They drafted a guy knowing he had made a commitment to Ohio State, and it would be kind of shitty to pressure him to go to Plymouth because the owner of the team happens to own them as well. Not that I necessarily believe they have put pressure on him; I think Markell is playing politics a bit.

Let's not have Jack Johnson part 2 here. If the kid wants to play for Ohio State, let him.

totally agree. it's not like he'd be making an immediate contribution in the next couple of years anyway.

that being said, there's no way this kid is a douchebag the level of JJ.

i hope with all the defensive talent the Kings got in this draft that they cut Jack Johnson loose.
ooooh, spite.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I didn't mean to sound like I was blaming the Jack Johnson fiasco on the organization, but I certainly think they played their part.

The thing is, this isn't about Dalpe's status with the Hurricanes. It's not us pressuring him to sign here. It's a matter of where he will be playing until he goes pro. Some guys play in junior, some guys go to college. He wants to go to Ohio State. Plymouth of the OHL drafted him, and we want him to play there. Why do we want that? Because Peter Karmanos owns the Plymouth Whalers.

That's why we've drafted 20 players from Plymouth in the last 15 years, nearly all of whom never made it to the NHL level.

"The Hurricanes have placed David Tanabe and Jeff Hamilton on waivers with the intention of buying out their contracts.

Tanabe missed the last half of the season with a concussion, and injured players cannot be bought out, but the Canes are taking the position that he is healthy.

Tanabe is under contract for $900,000 this season and Hamilton $800,000, so the Canes will be out $1.13 million in cash — $600,000 for Tanabe and $533,333 for Hamilton — and take a cap hit of $566,667 in 2008-09 and 2009-10. (All numbers pending revision, upon more than a quick glance of the CBA.)"

WTF? Well this trade worked out well

Quote :
"

Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford confirmed Monday that negotiations with Darcy Hordichuk have broken off and the Canes will not sign the free-agent forward before he hits the open market next week.

Carolina sent a fifth-round pick in 2009 to Nashville for the rights to the rough-and-tumble forward Thursday, but were unable to work out a deal. They'll get Nashville's fifth-round pick in 2010 if they don't sign him before training camp — which looks unlikely.

"We're not going to get anything done with him," Rutherford said. "The fact that we had tried to get a jump on it and he wasn't interested in what we had to say, it would appear we're not getting him."

it's all good since we get a conditional...i guess we were just trying to see if we could get his rights before he became an UFA, but evidently he thinks he can get a better deal on the open market...

whatever. we'll get some size on the fourth line somewhere.

play conboy as a winger on the fourth line, plz.

We have a trend with that waste bag.

get rid of him
Bring back
get rid of him

We better not follow the trend this time. Hopefully Rutherford has the negatives from the photos.

I don't even know if you are allowed to bring somebody back if you buy them out.

Anyway, I would bet the farm on Tanabe never playing in the NHL again.
