It's right in the middle of campus and there is no room for expansion. They will renovate but they're saying it'll be $200 million. BTW, it only sells out during PAC 10 play, so they aren't too worried about seating. It isn't used for Intramurals, it's used for gymnastics... there's no room within 10 miles to build anything there.

that's surprising that they don't sell it out for nonconference. what i really mean though is that it looks stupid. there's like fifty feet from the end of the floor to the seats behind each basket, doesn't look like a basketball arena at all. oh well.

I'd rather just accept that our vaunted AD hired someone not cut out for this college coach thing than to know no half time lead is safe and a second half meltdown is imminent no matter who we are playing. That USC game reminded me of why I was glad Herb decided to move on. We'll get a solid squad eventually. 1/18/2009 12:05:17 AM |

UCLA blogs and forums blowing up because Howland was outcoached.
Basically saying he has brainwashed Juniors and Seniors into ball control for the guards and setting up the perfect outside shot rather than driving to the hoop. And if you look at who was on the floor the last 15 minutes (Aboya=Sr., Shipp=Sr., Dragovic=Sr., Collison=Sr., many subs) they may have a point....Basically saying he didn't want his #1 recruiting class to take the game into their own hands and it really backfired (5 recruits averaging 4.6 stars) 1/18/2009 10:38:02 AM |

it's a pretty good recruiting class, but not top-10 by any means
Trent Lockett (**** scout #18 SG) 6'5" 185 Demetrius Walker (*** scout #32 PF) 6'4" 185 Ruslan Pateev (*** C) 6'11" 235
if they could get Renardo Sidney (***** scout #2 PF) 6'9" 260, then it would boost the hell out of the class ranking. but it's looking like he's Europe-bound 1/18/2009 8:13:51 PM |

It doesn't sell out for non-conference games because the majority of the student body doesn't care about sports at all. The cultural differences are a big part of this - 35% of the students are Asian, for example. As for alumni, for a 7:00 PM game, in most places around LA you'd have to leave work right at 5:00 and drive straight to Pauley just to make the tipoff, without even stopping for dinner or whatever. Figure 30 minutes after the game to get out of Westwood and another hour to get home. Not worth it for most alumni I suppose.
The huge gap from end to end is attributed to Wooden, who had a big hand in the design of Pauley. He did not want it to be like other arenas, where students could touch the players near the hoop (or bodyslam them like in the Wake game).
Level One is rollaway seating. Level Two is fixed as well as Level Three. You can see why they can't get the seats in Level One closer in this picture... http://lh4.ggpht.com/_V8OccZh6PdY/RfsopMA036I/AAAAAAAACD8/WkG9pQcTLKM/DSCN7510.JPG (it's big). Level Two is permanent and you really couldn't put people in front of the rollaways that are behind the basket. When they renovate, all of Level Two will be completely ripped out and rebuilt right.1/19/2009 1:56:52 PM |

this will be a VERY tough game. UofA loses -- they're done for the year. thus, they'll come out fighting like hell.
my prediction is that if Harden scores 20+ then ASU wins. anything less than that, is a toss-up
gotta keep Pendergraph out of foul trouble because I'd hate to see Boateng have to guard Jordan Hill for much more than 5-10 minutes total.
should come down to free throws and overtime wouldn't surprise me at all 1/21/2009 11:17:16 AM |

sure enough, as predicted, James scored 21....and ASU won
team shot less than 30% for the game and still pulled it out after being down at the half
16-3 (5-2)
first time since 1980 that ASU won @UCLA, @Stanford and @UofA in the same season
and....sitting on a 3 game win streak versus their rival 1/21/2009 11:46:21 PM |

Herb timed this move perfect. Arizona is going down hill and he was able to break a 12 game losing streak to them last year and has now won 3 in a row. In the mid 90's Arizona was pretty good and managed to win a national title two years after UCLA did. When he was at NC State he had to play against some of Duke, Wake Forest, UNC, and Maryland's greatest teams ever. 1/21/2009 11:56:45 PM |

^^The key word is "SOME." Maryland 2002 was pretty good. Outside of the 70's when else was Maryland ever that good? Duke 1999 was awsome. Duke 2001 won the NCAA Title. UNC had some really good teams that made it to the Final Four when Herb was here. Wake During the CP3 era was a pretty good team.

The Maryland teams that went up against DT's teams in the early-to-mid 70s were easily the best Maryland teams. But the recent Maryland teams with Blake/Dixon/Wilcox/Baxter/etc were right behind them. Maryland just didn't have any good teams before the 70s, in between those two eras, and/or recently.
So yeah...Herb went up against some of the best Maryland teams, some of the best Duke teams, and some of the best (and also some of the worst) UNC teams. 1/22/2009 9:59:04 AM |

Seeing as how Maryland only has one national championship and it was during Herb's tenure, I would say that was one of Maryland's greatest teams. We also beat them that year in the ACC tourney to make it to the championship when they were #2 in the nation. 1/22/2009 10:36:39 AM |
