No relation to Chris.

Dion has been establishing himself this year as one of the worst defensemen in the league at actually playing defense. Still scores a ton, still throws a big hit every now and then, but doesn't even try to defend his goal anymore.

Steve Mason was the best fantasy pickup ever. He deserves to be in the all star game with his mind boggling stats and play of late to get Columbus back in the playoff race.

You have GOT to be kidding me!!!!!!!

Shanahan agrees to join Devils
Quote :
"Shanahan, who began his career with New Jersey more than 20 years ago, has agreed to rejoin the Devils, who selected him with the No. 2 pick in the 1987 Entry Draft.

"Brendan Shanahan has agreed in principle to join the New Jersey Devils," General Manager Lou Lamoriello said in a statement issued Saturday. "He will begin skating on his own. Brendan will join the team at a date to be determined."

Shanahan has not yet signed a contract, but Lamoriello said that will be worked out, "in the next couple of days."

The Devils say Shanahan, who turns 40 next month, is expected to be more than a power-play specialist. Not that they can't use the help — New Jersey has dropped to 21st in power-play percentage at 16.4 percent.

"In our minds, Brendan can be a full-time player," Lamoriello said during a conference call. "It's no different than any other player. They determine the ice time that they get, and the coaches determine how much they're used within how the games go. He's not being signed just to play on power plays, or just to play [on penalty kills]. We feel he can come and help this team be better and have more success."

Shanahan is 11th on the all-time list with 650 goals and 24th with 1,340 career points, plus 59 goals and 131 points in 177 playoff games. He scored 23 goals -- 11 on the power play -- and added 23 assists in 73 games with the New York Rangers in 2007-08. He's been a free agent since his contract with the Rangers expired at the end of last season, and has been looking for a new team since then.

The Devils are third in the Atlantic Division. They entered the night four points behind first-place Philadelphia and are starting a six-game road trip with a game at Los Angeles on Saturday.

However, New Jersey has struggled to score in the past couple of weeks. Their 4-0 loss to Atlanta on Thursday was their third defeat by shutout in their past nine games.

Despite the offensive problems, Lamoriello said the decision to add Shanahan wasn't based on the recent struggles.

"I don't think you ever make a decision [based] on one or two games, or even three games," Lamoriello said. "I think the overall specialty teams' success – or lack of success – at a given time, in my mind, was the impetus to coming to this conclusion."

Shanahan spent four seasons with the Devils, scoring 88 goals and adding 126 assists for 214 points in 281 games, before joining the St. Louis Blues as a free agent in 1991 — a move that brought Hall of Famer Scott Stevens to the Devils as compensation under the rules then in place. He later played with Hartford and Detroit — winning Stanley Cups with the Red Wings in 1997, 1998 and 2002 — before joining the Rangers in 2006."

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=403443&navid=DL|NHL|home

I am so pissed they signed (re-signed) Fagahan. He is one of the principle reasons why I hated the Rangers before. At least now I can go to the game in March and yell "FAGAHAN" the entire game even though I will be cheering for the Devils.

Quote :
"The Las Vegas Strip, Yankee Stadium and the Rose Bowl are on the list of potential sites for the NHL's annual outdoor game, NHL chief operating officer John Collins said Wednesday.

Also included on the radar are venues in Washington, Detroit and Boston.

"This is really kind of becoming a destination event for hockey fans, but also sports fans," Collins told Bloomberg News. "We want to open it up to the masses."

The league is already evaluating potential locations of outdoor games after the Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 1 at Wrigley Field drew the highest TV ratings for the NHL in 34 years.

"Of course, New York would be high on the list," Collins said. "But we also think Boston could be a really special market, and Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Denver, Montreal and Toronto. There are so many different places."

Collins added that cities interested in hosting the outdoor game would have to bid for the rights, the same process the NFL uses for the Super Bowl."

Quote :
"MONTREAL - Quebec's century-long bond to the Montreal Canadiens has been called passion, and even obsession. Now a university theologian has branded it as religion.

The Swiss-born Universite de Montreal professor said the ubiquitous relics and rituals linked to the Habs struck him when he arrived in the city a few years ago.

The similarities prompted Olivier Bauer to launch a crusade - in the form of a university course - to explore the many ties between a team that hails its sweater as La Sainte Flanelle - or holy flannel - and spiritual devotion.

"It was a divine inspiration," Bauer said of the idea for his new French-language class, the Religion of the Canadiens.

"It was clear that the Canadiens were a kind of religion. For me, it was amazing that in Montreal there was a hockey jersey that is holy."

To back his thesis, Bauer refers to nicknames of the Canadiens' most notable "prayer leaders," including Saint Patrick (Patrick Roy), Le Demon Blond - the Blond Demon (Guy Lafleur) - and the team's current saviour, Jesus Price (Carey Price).

He said Canadiens worshippers have long told stories of the ghosts of players past that reside in the Forum - and Bell Centre - rafters, and the many miracles performed by Maurice (Rocket) Richard. "

Miracle in Boston.

St. Louis 18:40, David Perron 5 (power play) (Patrik Berglund, Carlo Colaiacovo)
St. Louis 19:59, David Backes 16 (Keith Tkachuk, David Perron)

Bruins can't hit the empty net and the Blues come racing back up the ice as Jack Edwards calls "It will take a miracle now" and David Backes bats in a puck out of mid-air and the puck goes in the net as the buzzer sounds. Blues win in a shootout.

don't worry, you'll like him soon enough...he is invaluable on the shootout and on the pp, plus can kill penalties if needed... i figured the devils wouldn't have him with such shitty linemates as holik and rupp though

"The ECHL's Las Vegas Wranglers are taking a cheap shot at an embattled governor from across the continent. Don't know why they're getting involved, but regardless the Wranglers and Bakersfield Condors will taunt Rod Blagojevich when they face off on January 31.

The Las Vegas Sun revealed the jerseys that will be worn on the ice that night. The Wranglers will don black and white striped sweaters with "ILLGOV" and the player's number on the front shoulder.

The Condors will don solid orange to mimic the jumpsuits now worn by inmates. And wait for it... the refs will wear policeman jerseys to keep everybody in line."

"Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne will replace Columbus' Steve Mason on the rookie team that will face a team of second-year players. That team will also have Chicago forward Dave Bolland and St. Louis' David Perron in the lineup, replacing Boston's Milan Lucic and Washington's Nicklas Backstrom.

In addition, the second-year players will have Montreal's Carey Price — who will start for the East in Sunday's game — in goal on Saturday, replacing Los Angeles' Erik Ersberg. "

Quote :
"Pittsburgh has no intention of testing NHL commissioner Gary Bettman's threat to suspend those who choose not show in Montreal for this weekends All-Star festivities.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is en route to Montreal and will arrive early this afternoon to fully participate in all off-ice All-Star activities.

The NHL says it will enforce an understanding that all players who decline to show after being named to the All-Star teams must miss at least one game before or one game after the All-Star weekend.

NHL vice-president Colin Campbell said that the league pushed for the rule because too many players were skipping the game without good reason.

''We've all got obligations to the fans, the rights holders - this game is being televised around the world,'' Campbell said.

Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk will have to sit out a game next week as punishment for skipping this weekends event.

''I feel bad for Nicklas Lidstrom,'' said Campbell. ''He's been here how many years now? It's unfair that he gets caught in this web.''

Detroit's next game is Tuesday night in Columbus."

TMI from Souray:

Quote :
""I’ve been taping my stick shafts the same way since I first started playing," said Souray, who is in his 10th NHL season, including five-plus with the All-Star host Canadiens. "I use white tape on the shaft [which is a light shade of green], then use the adhesive side of a piece of tape to make the shaft every more sticky. I like a really sticky shaft.""

I know it's been said for years but yeah, the All-Star game needs to go. any non-hockey fan watching this would probably never want to watch an NHL game again given the lack of contact, intensity, speed, etc. (basically everything that makes hockey worth watching).

God I hate Time Warner

Quote :
"My issue is regarding the recently launched Game HD channel (TWS45, channel 745). I have been having problems with this channel for weeks now trying to watch NHL Center Ice games in HD. Every few minutes the feed will freeze, then after a few minutes come back again. It does this
constantly. I know this is not a problem with my box because I have spoken with several other
Center Ice subscribers on Time Warner in the Triangle who have the same exact issue. The channel is basically unwatchable because of this."

Quote :
"Thank you for contacting Time Warner Cable Support.

I understand that channel 745 freezes intermittently.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and will be glad to assist you.

I have sent some refresh signals to your cable box, which usually resolves this issue.
If the issue is not resolved, please have the Cable box reset using the following information: To reset your digital receiver, unplug the power supply from the back of the receiver for at least
30 seconds. This will force the receiver to reset.

If this does not resolve the issue please contact us back and we will be glad to further assist you."

Quote :
"Neither of these solutions worked, because as I stated in the original message, the problem is likely not on my end since I have discussed this with other people in the area who have Time Warner Cable and a Center Ice subscription, and 745 freezes for them as well. "

Quote :
"Thank you for contacting Time Warner Cable Support.

I understand you continue to experience intermittent freezing issues while viewing Channel 745.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I will be happy to assist you.

A technician has been scheduled to visit on 02/03/2009, between 01:00 AM and 12:00 Noon. The
technician will call 704-576-2360 before they arrive. We will require someone over the age of 18 to
allow us entry to your home. Please let us know if this should be rescheduled.

We value you as a customer."

Quote :
"I will not be home at that time, so there will be no one here to let the technician in. I do not need a technician to look at my box, or my outlet, or my television, or anything else in my home. I need someone at Time Warner or InDemand to investigate what is wrong with this feed. There also appears to be too much compression on this channel, as there is a great deal of artifacts.

Again, please cancel the technician because I will not be here."
