anyone fished around or near Sparta, NC? Im heading up to that area this weekend and renting a cabin and looking to break out my rod and reel. I hear there are excellent trout streams in the area but personal recommendations would be great.

We left the dock at OI around 0530 and we were fishing by 0700; it was slick cam and we were able to run 30kts. This was the polar opposite of what what ty and I experienced last month when I thought we were going to die in the inlet...no joke.

We start to troll and its dead; no signs of life, no color/temp change, nada. We troll by the tilefish grounds and drop. Bam Bam Bam. We had 5-10lbers on everytime, I hooked two double headers. I start feeling a little sick so its time to start heading inshore. About 20miles left in the ride we stop at the Radar tower and see if we can wrestle an Amberjack. We keep hooking up but breaking off. Finally I get one tight and it was on. 20 minutes later I had a least a 45inch Jack by the boat. Took a pic and let him go. We caught 3 more, all pigs.

Got back at 3.

due to my sister getting dumped, I'm now going to Myrtle Beach this Sun-Weds...anyone have a suggestion for a head boat in that area? I'm guessing Calabash is the closest....I've gone out on the Hurricane Fleet in the past and had pretty good results. I've really never been to Myrtle, only Ocean Isle, so I'm not sure if anything is closer or if any boats are preferred by you old salts. I'm looking only for Gulf steam 11+hr charters

our stringer, nothing extraordinary, seas were nice, didn't get roasted...no real big hookups on the boat...sadly the big fish pot was won by ~15lb bar jack...other than that we were on top of fish throughout the day, caught some dogfish but didn't bother keeping em

I went to Hunting Island, SC last week. We fished from the pier a couple times, which is always fun. Didn't catch a whole lot though. We went gigging one night, from about 12-3 and only put 4 in the boat. 'Twas fun, though. I do love stabbing some fish. Another night we went and fished the rocks at Fripp Island. We were about ten yards off the rocks that compose it's shore, and the ocean was like glass, it was wonderful. We caught a quite a few fish - porgy, croaker, black sea bass. And I caught about a dozen oyster toadfish. Damn that's an ugly fish. Seriously put my bait in the water and within 20 seconds hooked one of those things three times. All in all, a very good time. I really should go fishing more often.

For visual confirmation of oyster toadfish heinousness:

Thanks. Depends on how far you want to go/how much range you got. The offshore fishing is pretty slow right now except the bill fishing has been hot. Last couple of trips we have trolled for about an hour then went bottom fishing for Tiles. Amberjack fishing has been pretty good at the 20 mile towers (fast metal jigs, bass assassins and live bait.

Just an FYI: it going to blow out of the N the next couple of days; even with a slight breeze out of the inlet combined with an outgoing tide gets that inlet churned up. Ask ty, we had to battle 10+ with about 4 secs in between; but it was a bathtub on the other side.

Need anymore info shoot me a PM.

I need an update photo of the rig with the new center rigger, it a monster.

Inlet was like a lake and so was the ocean yesterday. Winds were blowing around 5 knots. Ended up with nothing but, spanish Is that your boat on the left of the water way headed towards the inlet from OIFC? Im going out of Bogue Inlet tomorrow and hoping for some better luck.

^^haha..i know man, shitty cell phone.

i caught it in the intercoastal waterway at the sunset beach bridge as the tide was going out, fishing with shrimp.

its about two feet long, baracuda-esque head with nasty teeth. long, skinny body that comes to a point. dorsal fin runs pretty much the length of it's body. no tail fin or anything. i saw them chasing baitfish all over the place.

also caught a couple sheepshead and a black drum

edit: i think it's a cutlassfish.

We caught some beautiful Catfish on Cherry Point today at a little pond. We will go back tomorrow and hopefully catch more so we can have a fish fry. Anyone know any good pay piers near Moorehead City that they have been catching at?

if you can get on base at cherry point there's a free "pier" at the end of the runway on slocum creek that you can catch trout, flounder, red drum, and stripers (when they're in season) from. i fish slocum on the boat and see folks up there all the time, but i can't get on base so i don't know the details. biggest flounder i ever caught from slocum was caught by throwing a redfish magic softbait right around that pier/dock from the boat.

to answer your question, no, there are no fishing piers in morehead. there's the sheraton pier in atlantic beach and bogue inlet pier in emerald isle. they both suck imo, but ymmv.

Yeah Slocum is good. I dont know if you know but off 101 right near Sneads Ferry is where my husband goes flounder gigging and he catches some nice flounder. To bad you can not get on base because near Officer Housing they have some good spots. I even caught a gator earlier today but of course it was released.

Yo, I know there are no Cabela's in NC or within 500 miles, but try to check their bargain cave at http://www.cabelas.com

They have PVC rod cases up to 72" right now for 3.98, reg $19.99.

http://idek.net/VDi

I got 4 of those plus a pair of boots, size 14, for $36.00 total. The boots went from $19.99 to $59.99 in two hours, hahahaha. I made this post this AM on my CO fishing forum and I guess they FOUND out.
