this isn't really Tennessee Footbal related but it's SEC related and I don't know if there is a better thread to post this but Bama is going to have to vacate like 21 wins from 05-07:
Quote : | "The NCAA will reveal later Thursday that the Alabama football program must vacate victories from 2005 through 2007 that included players who improperly obtained free textbooks for other students, The Birmingham News is reporting.
Alabama could be forced to vacate as many as 21 wins under the watch of former coach Mike Shula and current coach Nick Saban, sources at the university told ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach. Citing a source, the News reported the number of wins to be at least 10.
The Crimson Tide will not lose future scholarships, according to the News. The university also will be placed on probation for the second time in the past eight years and ordered to pay a fine, the newspaper reported.
University officials aren't permitted to comment until the NCAA releases its findings in a 3 p.m. ET teleconference.
"First of all, I think the University of Alabama, Dr. [Robert] Witt [president], and Mal Moore [athletic director] did a great job of demonstrating institutional integrity in the way they handled this internally," Saban told the News on Thursday. "I'm really happy for the players we have in the program that this won't affect their future, nor will it affect the players we're recruiting. We're always happy to be moving on, and we're looking forward to the future."
The NCAA alleges the violations began at the start of the 2005 season; the university reported the violations after uncovering them during the '07 football season, when starting linemen Antoine Caldwell and Marlon Davis, running back Glen Coffee, and defensive backs Chris Rogers and Marquis Johnson were suspended for four games.
Under NCAA rules, the players would be ruled ineligible from when they first received the "extra benefits" and would have been ineligible until they were suspended and reinstated.
The investigation also included athletes in other sports that the university has not disclosed.
Alabama appeared before the Committee on Infractions on Feb. 20 to answer allegations of potentially major violations involving the improper disbursement of textbooks and "failure to adequately monitor" the textbook distribution process for student-athletes.
The violations occurred during the 2005-06 school year and into the fall of 2007. That left the university subject to potentially stiffer penalties as a repeat violator because the football program was placed on probation on Feb. 1, 2002.
The new case also reopens the five-year repeat violator window.
Saban replaced Shula as coach after the 2006 football season and suspended Caldwell, Coffee, Johnson, Rogers and Davis when the university uncovered the violations. The Tide were 5-2 at that point in the 2007 season, and their only wins in the next six games came against Tennessee, and in the Independence Bowl against Colorado.
The sanctions come at a time when Alabama fans were celebrating the program's return to national prominence. Saban led the Tide to a 12-0 regular-season record and a No. 1 ranking last season, before the team lost to Florida in the Southeastern Conference championship game and to Utah in the Sugar Bowl.
The university uncovered the violations after an Alabama Supply Store employee realized that an athlete had more than $1,600 in charges for the fall semester of 2007 and alerted university officials. Athletes get free textbooks with their scholarships, but some were accused of getting additional textbooks for other students.
Alabama has changed some of its procedures, including requiring compliance officials to be present when student-athletes pick up their books.
The university has said none of the textbooks or materials was used for profit or to get items not related to academics, and that the athletes involved who still have eligibility remaining have had to pay restitution." |

Quote : | "A New Team On Top In SEC Football History June 15th, 2009 8:33 am ¦ Posted By: John Pennington
Oh, Alabama fans aren’t going to be happy about this one.
But as many Tennessee fans have emailed me over the weekend, there’s a new all-time winningest team SEC football history… and the crown changed hands in the off-season of all times.
With Alabama’s forced vacation of 21 wins between 2005 and 2007, Bama has now fallen into second place all-time in the SEC in wins and in winning percentage. (That’s overall wins, not just conference wins and losses.)
Since it was Tennessee fans who alerted me to this statistical flip-flop, I think you can guess which school grabbed the top spot.
So, as of today, here are your all-time standings in the Southeastern Conference by winning percentage… with all-time each school’s all-time W-L-T record listed to the right.
Rank School Pct. W L T 1 Tennessee .6930 784 332 55 2 Alabama .6904 778 337 43 3 Georgia .6459 723 384 54 4 LSU .6402 700 383 47 5 Florida .6280 642 372 40 6 Auburn .6273 681 395 47 7 Arkansas .5944 654 440 39 8 Ole Miss .5669 609 461 35 9 Vanderbilt .5047 556 545 50 10 Kentucky .5034 560 552 44 11 S. Carolina .5018 529 525 44 12 Miss. State .4809 486 526 39 As you can see, if you rank the teams purely by all-time wins, the results would fall as follows:
1. Tennessee 2. Alabama 3. Georgia 4. LSU 5. Auburn 6. Florida 7. Arkansas 8. Ole Miss 9. Kentucky 10. Vanderbilt 11. South Carolina 12. Mississippi State
You’ll also note that the only team in the SEC to have lost more games all-time than it has won is poor ‘ol Mississippi State.
See, Bama fans, there is a worse feeling than falling from number one to number two. There’s the embarrassment of being the SEC’s all-time worst football program.
Now, here’s one last statistical breakdown for you. Let’s see how the numbers lay out since 1950… which in most cases is viewed as “the beginning of the modern era.”
Rank School Pct W L T 1 Tennessee .6963 467 198 20 2 Florida .6718 447 214 17 3 Alabama .6678 455 222 17 4 Auburn .6656 438 217 12 5 Georgia .6587 436 221 20 6 LSU .6390 421 233 22 7 Arkansas .6311 418 242 11 8 Ole Miss .6007 389 256 15 9 S. Carolina .4976 314 317 15 10 Kentucky .4467 282 351 15 11 Miss. State .4230 263 361 13 12 Vanderbilt .3450 211 409 19 Looks a little different doesn’t it? And for the record, Vanderbilt’s post-1950 record is not only the worst in the SEC, it’s the worst in the nation. Congrats, Commodores.

hahahahha, free books rule!
crazy that Vandy is the worst in the country, never would have thought that... also didnt realize how far UT and Bama were above the rest. They would have to have a good 5-6 straight 10 win seasons with the top 2 having zero wins to catch up.
and Brunetti is a weirdo... went to camp last week at UT and said it was his life long dream to get an offer, got the offer, then just committed to WV today. WTF?
apparently he had a verbal offer but nothing on paper... Kiffin is a picky son of a bitch at QB

Quote : | "n the first big-blow news of the offseason, Tennessee freshman running back Toney Williams – who impressed coaches during spring after being a mid-term enrollee — has torn his anterior cruciate ligament and will likely miss the season, Volquest.com reported today.
The news of Williams’ torn ACL actually originated on a Volnation message board a couple of days ago. This late, there’s virtually no chance the Milton High School (Atlanta, Ga.) product can play this year, which leaves only Montario Hardesty, Tauren Poole, Bryce Brown and David Oku at running back. If Oku isn’t ready — which is a definite possibility after reading about 7-on-7 drills — and needs a redshirt, the running back position just got a little less deep.
Here’s hoping that “To-NAY” as Coach O calls him, has a speedy recovery. Potentially big blow for the Vols, who can’t afford anymore injuries at that position." |
and this is awesome (worked for Bryce Brown and Nukeese
And got a new recruit today:
Quote : | " Jackson, Kentucky, three-star athlete Channing Fugate has committed to the University of Tennessee. Fugate becomes the Vols’ ninth commitment and the second on offense.
Though he plays running back and strong safety for Breathitt County High School where he rushed for 3,052 yards and 36 touchdowns as a junior last year, UT is recruiting him to play the hybrid (fullback/H-back) position for them. He is 6-feet-1, 230 pounds, and, honestly, I’d never heard of him until this morning. The kid has a chance to break the state high school rushing record in Kentucky as a senior next season.
He chose UT over offers from Illinois, Purdue, Stanford and Louisville, among others, and he was just beginning to camp. The Vols liked what they saw from Fugate at the first camp held a couple of weeks ago, and after inviting him back, they offered and he committed on the spot. Hopefully, he’s a Jacob Hester type … the two-star fullback who went to LSU and became an SEC star and NFL player. Maybe he has a Chris Lofton-esque impact on the football team as a little-recruited Kentucky product who turned into a star.
I don’t know what kind of competition he’s playing against up there, but I trust these coaches’ evaluations, and his film certainly looks pretty good. He has a country club name, but oh well. What are you going to do? Welcome to Big Orange Country, Channing!" |

Quote : | "Scroggins visits both Florida and Tennessee
By James Bryant Recruiting Analyst InsideTennessee Posted Jun 23, 2009
It’s no secret, California signal caller Jesse Scroggins is looking for a place he can comfortably call home for the next four to five years.
The Scout.com four star prospect recently visited the University of Florida and the University of Tennessee, participated in their camps and got an opportunity to get to know each coaching staff better.
“I loved it at Tennessee,” Scroggins told InsideTennessee.com late Monday night. “It was very comforting, I loved the family atmosphere in Knoxville.”
One thing that stood out to Scroggins at UT is the happiness of the current Vol players.
“They love the new coaching staff,” Scroggins said. “To see how happy the older guys are was very inspirational to me. They are buying in to what Coach (Lane) Kiffin is doing, I think great things are ahead for this football program.”
Apparently the Vol coaching staff made it no secret to Scroggins and his family how important he is to their future plans.
“They definitely rolled out the Orange carpet,” Scroggins said. “I hope they were themselves and I felt that they were. They definitely stressed I was their No. 1 target and a key to their future plans. It feels good to be in that place for them.”
Scroggins got a chance to spend three days Florida before arriving in Knoxville for three days. While many may feel that the depth chart situation favors the Vols, Scroggins explained that both are very similar.
“Actually Florida quarterback situation is a lot like the one at Tennessee,” Scroggins said. “They both have two quarterbacks and one of them is a senior at both places.”
When asked to compare the two visits, Scroggins wasn’t ready to do that.
“They are both different places,” Scroggins said. “They are both great places at the same time but in a lot of different ways.”
Did Coach Urban Meyers push for a commitment while he was in the Swamp?
“Coach Meyers told me to wait and make my decision when I was sure I was ready,” Scroggins said. “Coach Kiffin and his staff let me know how important I was to them and how much they needed me, but they didn’t say I had to make a decision immediately either.”
Kiffin apparently made an impression on Scroggins.
“He is very young and very athletic,” Scroggins said. “He is out there going through things with us, it’s really cool. He is very accessible and a lot easier to talk to. You can talk to Coach Kiffin about anything.”
Does Scroggins have a favorite between Florida and Tennessee after the visits?
“It’s a dead tie,” Scroggins said. “It’s going to be a tough decision, I’m going to USC later this week and then I will sit down and look at everything. When I’m ready I will make a decision, I really don’t have a time frame for one.”

From Scout.com:
Quote : | "College football coaches have highlighted Lakewood California on their maps this recruiting season and for good reason.
Lane Kiffin is no exception, he is relying on an area he is very familiar with in his efforts of rebuilding the football fortunes at the University of Tennessee.
Lakewood High School is the home of two of the top players in the Golden State, four star quarterback Jesse Scroggins and three star defensive back Dion Bailey.
Both Bailey and Scroggins has offers from the Volunteers and it appears both will take unofficial visits to Rocky Top.
“Yes sir I’m going down there the first week in August,” Bailey told InsideTennessee.com Friday. “Jesse took a trip there last week and really loved it a lot there, we are great friends and it would be great for us to play at the same college.”
Bailey currently holds 19 official offers, including one from Southern California. Both Bailey and Scroggins attended the Trojans camp this week.
“I thought I did well,” Bailey explained. “Jesse had a great camp, he got an offer from USC.”
Did either of the two make a commitment to USC?
“No sir, neither of us have made a decision yet,” Bailey said. “I know Jesse really loved his trip to Tennessee, all the great things he has told me about it, makes me want to see it that much more.”
Bailey also is impressed by how hard he is being recruiting by the Tennessee coaching staff.
“They are really recruiting me harder than most schools,” Bailey said. “I have really been impressed with their coaching staff.”
Bailey has heard a lot about how crazy the football atmosphere can be in the SEC.
“Jesse said that the stadium was incredible and that everyone really gets into their football at Tennessee,” Bailey said. “I can’t wait to check things out for myself. I’m really looking forward to my visit.”" |

Zach Fulton, a 6' 5", 306 lb. offensive lineman from Homewodd, Illinois verbally committed to UT this afternoon. This is the second OL commitment for the '10 class. This is great news. He performed very well at the camp held in Knoxville earlier this month.
Also, Jesse Scroggins stated that he will announce his decision on where to commit in late July so all USC, UF, and UT fans get to sweat it out for another month or so. 6/29/2009 4:43:12 PM |

Quote : | " Zach Fulton, an imposing 6-5, 315-pound offensive tackle prospect from Homewood High in Flossmoor, Ill., committed to the Vols at around 1:45 today during a meeting with UT head coach Lane Kiffin.
"I feel great; it's a big weight off my back," Fulton said, relieved and elated as he chatted outside the UT Football Complex. "Now I can focus on my (high school) team. I want to concentrate on winning a state championship, so I'm glad to get the recruiting process over with."
Verbal commitments are not binding but he said his decision is final and that he will not visit any more schools.
After describing himself as "more of a run blocker, a big mauler guy," the newest Vol commitment qualified by noting that "I like pass blocking a lot, and I feel I'm balanced."
Fulton made an unofficial visit to the campus in March, then returned June 1 for Tennessee's Lineman Camp. He performed so impressively in the latter that Kiffin pulled him from a film session with the other campers and formally extended a scholarship offer.
"I told him I was very happy and very excited," Fulton recalled, "and I told him I needed to talk to my family about it."
Fulton was an absolute beast at the camp, displaying tremendous punch with his hands and surprising quickness for a man so large. Basically, he left Kiffin no choice but to offer a scholarship.
"I thought I did OK," Fulton said with a laugh. "I didn't think I did THAT well. I can always do better. That's why I'm coming here ... to get better."
Already leaning to the Vols when he returned from UT's camp, Fulton got additional reinforcement from the people he trusts most.
"I talked to my dad, my uncle and my coach," he recalled. "They felt the same way I did - that Tennessee was the right place for me. I felt there was no point in waiting any more, so the third time (visit) was the charm."
Young Fulton says Tennessee essentially blew away the competition.
"There's not any place whose facilities can match Tennessee's," he said. "There was no competition, as far as camp, academics and everything else. Everything went right."
That included his meetings with UT offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and offensive tackles/tight end coach James Cregg.
"They're great," Fulton said. "They have a lot of NFL experience, and that's something you want. If I get the opportunity to go to the next level I'll already be prepared for that."
Tennessee has very little offensive line depth for 2009 and will be losing four key seniors at season's end. The resulting opportunity for immediate playing time figured prominently in Fulton's decision.
"That weighed a lot," he said. "And the chance to play in the SEC makes you better. That's the main goal for me; I want to get better." " |

Got another OL commitment yesterday, Marques Pair. That's eleven total commitments for the '10 class so far.
Quote : | "When he arrived at the University of Tennessee's one-day camp for lineman earlier this month, Marques Pair was a relative unknown in the ultra-competitive world of football recruiting.
A good performance in front of myriad media outlets, not to mention the Volunteers' coaching staff, changed things for the athletic but raw 6-foot-6-inch, 255-pounder from Sumter, S.C. On Monday, just as Pair's recruitment was reaching a bit of a frenzied state with increased interest from UT, South Carolina, North Carolina, Clemson, N.C. State and Auburn, Pair ended the suspense when he pledged to UT.
"Pretty much just when I went to their camp, I did my thing that I was told to do by the coaches and it just went from there. They liked me, like what they see and I liked their camp," said the well-spoken Pair, who also is solid in the classroom with nearly a 3.0 GPA.
"I started talking to some coaches and players and the next thing you know, I got the offer and I committed."
Pair's commitment was the Vols' second in the trenches on Monday; fellow three-star offensive lineman Zach Fulton of Illinois, the No. 21 guard according to Rivals.com, also declared for Tennnessee.
Pair's performance at camp only enhanced his confidence and solidified his relationship with UT quarterbacks coach David Reaves, who had first studied Pair while still on Steve Spurrier's South Carolina staff.
"My confidence was already up but that camp was really good," Pair said. "David Reaves was already recruiting me from South Carolina and when he moved over to Tennessee, he still had confidence in me. He told the head coach about me, and it just went from there."
So what was Reaves' reaction when Pair committed?
"He was excited, but he was ready to go ahead and tell coach Lane Kiffin."
Pair simply was elated to bring an end to his recruiting process before it dominated his summer.
"It feels a whole lot better, a whole lot better," he said. "I've got that monkey off my back and can get ready for the season. I want to help the offense become No. 1 in the state, win a state championship and go off to college." " |

Quote : | " Berry's brother has long way to go; father says reporter ran with story on soon-to-be 8th grader
James Berry got more than a few phone calls on Monday evening when his son's name went scrolling across the screen on ESPN.
It wasn't University of Tennessee All-American safety Eric Berry, but rather his 13-year-old brother, Evan, who became national news on Monday after Rivals.com reported he had committed to play football for the Vols.
Needless to say, James Berry, a former UT player, was a little surprised.
"I was taken aback," James Berry said Tuesday afternoon. "People were calling me asking me, 'What's this I hear about your son committing to Tennessee? It's on ESPN.' "
It wasn't planned that way. In fact, it wasn't planned at all, James Berry said.
Evan, who also has a twin brother, Elliott, spoke to a reporter at a recent track meet, James Berry said, and the topic turned to Tennessee.
"They found out he was Eric's brother," James Berry said. "They were asking them about Tennessee. The conversation turned to Evan, and he said he wanted to go to Tennessee."
According to his father, Evan answered a follow-up question by saying he was committed to Tennessee.
Evan and Elliott Berry have been frequent visitors to UT practices when in town to visit their older brother, although NCAA rules prohibit a school from offering a scholarship until a prospect is registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
That's still a long ways away. Both Evan and Elliott will start eighth grade in the fall, James Berry said, not ninth grade, as had been reported by Rivals.com.
Monday's attention might have been premature, but Evan and Elliott are already turning heads on the track.
Evan recently ran the 100 meters in 11.2 seconds, while Elliott took first place in the 200 at last year's AAU Junior Olympics in the sub-youth category. Both also play football.
"I'm excited about it and I'm proud of them because they're hard workers to excel in something they love," James Berry said. "The things that they're doing now, there's no doubt in my mind that more than likely they'll be able to attend a Division I school."
For Evan, the choice is Tennessee. But James Berry says it's up to each of his sons to make the decision.
"Wherever my kids end up at, that will be their decision," he said. "I would never pressure them into making that decision."
And as for Evan's more famous older brother, James Berry said he'd hadn't talked to Eric since Monday's news. But he's pretty sure the UT safety got a good laugh out of it.
"I'm pretty sure he heard about it," James Berry said. "He's probably rolling around with a big grin on his face."" |

I know the Old Smokey logos have been around, I've just never seen that version before. I've seen it on a few websites this offseason. That's all.

we got dat kicker
Quote : | "For the past few years, Tennessee has endured its fair share of inconsistency in the kicking game. On Thursday night, the Vols went a long way in remedying that annoyance.
Michael Palardy, a 6-foot, 170-pound kicker from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale pledged his commitment to UT in front of family and friends. He chose the Vols over other finalist, LSU. Palardy — Scout.com’s No. 1 rated kicker and one of the top three in the country according to Rivals.com — also had offers from virtually everybody, and has one of the strongest legs in the country.
Palardy was recruited by UT ace Eddie Gran, who continues to make his presence felt in South Florida. The kicker said he has forged a strong Christian bond with Gran, and that was one of the main things that pushed him over the top to commit to the Vols. He said he “fell in love” with UT on his recent visit.
With the inconsistent Daniel Lincoln heading into his junior year, Palardy will at most sit one year behind the Vols’ incumbent. Among his high school statistics playing for the powerhouse Aquinas program, Palardy made 76-of-78 extra points and booted more than 95 percent of his kickoffs through the end zone. He made two 60-plus yard field goals last year and claims to have hit a 70-plus yarder off a tee.
Palardy becomes the Vols’ 12th commitment this year and one of the biggest weapons, especially considering UT’s most recent porous kickoff coverage teams. He was UT’s top special teams target and is a big addition to the 2010 class.
Thanks to Michael Langston at FlaVarsity.com for the live updates." |

im assuming the 4 of 5 field goal attempts has something to do with the fact that his team scored 78 touchdowns in a year. jebus. 7/2/2009 10:46:23 PM |

Trying to put a clever spin on how much Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin is disliked is like Kobe Bryant trying to feint happiness at having Ron Artest as a new teammate. You feel contractually obliged to do so, but let’s be serious; it’s plainly irrational.
Because quite frankly, Kiffin is hated. Not Bernie Madoff hated, but clearly on par with soccer star Dimitar Berbatov.
But what most people don’t understand — or just don’t seem to care about — is that Kiffin is the best thing to happen to the Vols since, well, Billy Ratliff. Kiffin’s confident. He’s brash. And he loves making fun of Urban Meyer. I dare you to find three better character traits in a person.
Yet every writer I’ve seen, every television reporter I’ve watched, every person I’ve talked to, has some sort of vendetta against Kiffin. He’s arrogant. He’s a jerk. He’s a cheater. He has bad hair. Good lord. I haven’t seen this much complaining since the news of Jeremy Foley’s birth was announced.
The latest outcry against Kiffin stems from the news that the 13-year-old brother of Vols’ star Eric Berry had committed to Tennessee. Although these reports were misleading, media agencies throughout the country ran with the story. The boy, Evan, only said he wanted to play for Tennessee, and when approached for more, said he was committed.
Maybe I’m completely out of the loop, but I don’t really consider that a commitment. One, he hasn’t been offered a scholarship. Two, he’s 13. Three, I say similar statements all the time, but no one writes stories about me being committed to Tennessee.
In reality, Tennessee football has become the hated outsider. The DeSagana Diop of college football if you will. And everyone’s trying — or better be trying — to get their licks in now. Because in a few years at most, Kiffin is going to be taunting every coach, running up every score and basically saying some nasty expletives to every rival in the sport.
And there won’t be a thing that Meyer, Nick “What Textbooks?” Saban or Steve “Pump My Gas” Spurrier can do about it.
Already, you can begin to see the changes in the football program. Behind Phillip Fulmer, the Vols were the laughingstock of the SEC. Spurrier basically stole Tennessee’s lunch money every year as Florida’s coach, and the Big Orange’s defense coordinator, John Chavis, was better known for being a habitual pansy rather than a good coach.
Now, every defensive recruit in the country seems to be at least considering Tennessee. Every offensive skill position player seems to dream of being used by Kiffin like a Dwayne Jarrett or a Mike Williams.
Heck, take this year for example. Kiffin was officially introduced as the Vols’ coach on the first of December. In basically two months, he salvaged an abysmal recruiting season by Fulmer and reeled in a top-10 class. He signed the nation’s No. 1 player in Bryce Brown.
Though some recruits were turned off by his persona, Kiffin couldn’t care less. He knows he’s going to get players. He knows he’s going to get wins. He knows he’s going to be a success.
It’s unbelievably refreshing to see such actions out of a Tennessee coach. For so long, I’ve sat witness to an oversized piece of lard. I’ve cursed repeatedly over Chavis’ tendencies to willingly allow opponents to score because: Who really wants to win?
Well, Lane Kiffin surely does. And if he’s anything like Kobe, Kiffin will undoubtedly get his, too.
