I think I've settled on a modestly priced one bedroom apartment in a big old house in Aycock. It's like two miles from work, the immediately neighboring houses are mostly single family residences and I feel pretty safe driving through the neighborhood. The truly sketchy folks seem to be on Chestnut, a few blocks up.
