Saw it at IMAX. I definitely recommend watching it there. It was remarkable!

I haven't stayed awake through a movie in a long time, and this one was like 3 hours late at night and I didn't get sleepy it at all! It's just a pretty movie

I weigh enough and get enough exercise, and I require 7-8 hours, but I alway get up before 8 regardless of how hard I try to sleep in. I've just always gotten sleepy in movies.
what does that have to do with AVATAR?

thread is officially

SPOILER ALERT

SPOILER ALERT

SPOILER ALERT

once the movie is out, why look in the thread? you know people will discuss and it is extremely tedious to have to post SPOILER ALERT for every plot point. do we need another thread for discussion about the movie?

i look her for reviews, spoilers are fair game as long as they have the tags, but it was done poorly
plus what is the point of the spoiler he posted,
he did not discuss it at all, it had no purpose

I thought the movie was great but not nearly as revolutionary as the film industry was claiming it would be. Also, I'd like to point out that I didn't dislike Michelle Rodriguez's character. I have hated her characters in every other movie/TV show she's been in, but she did a pretty decent job in this one.

^^^^^ The movie is out, people have seen it and will be talking about it in this thread. Either don't read the thread or pay careful attention to the spoiler tags if you care so much (but not enough to have already seen it?). Not that the spoiler he posted was very important, there are some plants with more screen time than Norm's Avatar.

***************SPOILER***********
From what I remember Norm's Avatar was shot a few times and he was disconnected from it but they never actually show it dying or dead. I assumed the trauma was enough to disconnect the operator and when he fell out of the link machine he was clutching his shoulder and arm, not necessarily mortal wounds. Plus at the beginning the commander talked about how hard it was to kill the Na'vi because of their carbon fiber bones, etc, etc.

I do grow tired of the hollywood villians always being the dumb military just looking for blood and evil coorporations out to kill for money... but I would see it again.

It doesn’t make sense I don’t think to use the avatars post-war.

Wow the normal 3d is really blurry compared to the IMAX. It's like going from DVD to bluray. 70mm film ftw. Make sure to see it in IMAX if you want quality.

^After I saw it in IMAX i was thinking...man the bluray is really going to suck unless it comes with glasses haha.

and then I thought...Modern Warfare 2 would be awesome like this.

downers:
the story was somewhat generic/predictable/silly (red bird? forest animals??)
blue culture was straight up native american and african cultures
robots and machines were not cool enough
completely ripped off helicopter gunner from Full Metal Jacket
colonel was annoyingly evil
no Zoe Saldana in human form (plays the girl warrior FYI)
etc

?'s:
wtf is so special about the ore? tell us how it's used, etc
what happened to the mining the place afterwards?
spontaneous spring water creation? I don't think so

I did like the movie and once I got the gist of it (having gone in not knowing at all what to expect), I wanted it to be a 3D Dances with Wolves. Unfortunately for me, it eventually leaned more towards the action side rather than the culture immersion side. With these kinds of movies, I'm always more interested in seeing how the people live, how the world works, etc (fake and all)

is the 3D really THAT much more awesome than other 3D movies? This is the first one to which I've ever been j/w.

Just got back from seeing in 3d, it was amazing. I would love to have seen it at an Imax though.

Yeah the floating mountains didn't bother me, could be some unexplained natural phenomenon, but the waterfalls were kind of annoying. Nothing that ruined the experience though.

Movie was too cliché, and I had to restrain manic laughter for the entire showing.

"I didn't sign up for this shit!"

I needed to take a notepad to write stuff down. It was cowboys vs. indians with a splash of ferngully and tiddly bit of Aliens. Throw some Titanic emotional slop in there and you have the culmination of James Cameron's career.

As for Norm's avatar, he wouldn't have lost his link unless the avatar went unconscious. I would assume that unconscious with mortal wounds would be death. There were other avatars at the beginning of the movie.

Although I didn't much like the story, I will say that the visuals were great even in glorious 2D 35mm film.

It's the same as why are there rivers coming down from mountains. Snow/ice/rain.

Has anyone seen it in IMAX then went and saw it in regular digital? I was amazed at how much the picture quality sucked in regular reald digital. Like the entire movie was blurry as hell. Almost unwatchable after watching it in IMAX.

there would need to be constant rain to have Angel Falls comin' off a land mass of that (small) size. Some things still need to be believable/consistent in a fantasy movie. I can deal with floating mountains, though I did scoff a little at it on first mention

Good lord how I loved this movie. The visuals are AMAZING! It will be very difficult to replicate this high level of movie going experience again. Sure, the story was a bit predictable but who the hell cares when it looks this good? I guess given my own religion/cultural heritage I could really empathize with the Na'vi.

I thought there were helium bubbles within it or at least some gas that was much lighter than the atmosphere. Speaking of that, I thought that the Navi were going to lure their ships underneath them and let the bubbles out of the top so the rocks would crush them, but that might have been too Ewokish.

A weird Review, those that have seen the movie let me know if he is on to something:
Quote :
"Think of it this way. Avatar is a fantasy about ceasing to be white, giving up the old human meatsack to join the blue people, but never losing white privilege. Jake never really knows what it's like to be a Na'vi because he always has the option to switch back into human mode. Interestingly, Wikus in District 9 learns a very different lesson. He's becoming alien and he can't go back. He has no other choice but to live in the slums and eat catfood. And guess what? He really hates it. He helps his alien buddy to escape Earth solely because he's hoping the guy will come back in a few years with a "cure" for his alienness. When whites fantasize about becoming other races, it's only fun if they can blithely ignore the fundamental experience of being an oppressed racial group. Which is that you are oppressed, and nobody will let you be a leader of anything."
