alright, I want to like this new Fang Island album because of their cool harmonies and happy moments...but it just leaves me feeling awkward and it reminds me of an opening for a 90's TV show. I do however, like their old stuff which I just listened to today also. Day of the great leap is better, in my opinion. When summer comes though, I could see myself with the windows open and blaring the new stuff. 3/1/2010 6:57:35 PM |

A lot of people on here might not get into them, I dono. With their previous albums and EPs I always said RIYL: American Football, Owls, Minus the Bear, etc.
This one has a very different mood from their other albums and I'm not quite sure who to compare it to yet but after 1 listen I really like it. It has a great cohesiveness while each song definitely has its own personality. Kind of tilts a little more to some up-beat rock stuff than the airy Kinsella-esque legato of their earlier stuff.

Minus The Bear is streaming "My Time" off of the upcoming album Omni here:
http://www.spinner.com/2010/03/03/minus-the-bear-my-time-song-premiere/
definitely a little different than I expected. A lot more synth texture going on in this one than I am used to coming from them and it has more of a funk feel too. Not necessarily bad just strange.
But at the same time, "Into the Mirror" was already released awhile back )which will be on this upcoming album as well) and that pretty much sounded like something that would have come directly off of Planet of Ice, so I don't quite know what to expect for this album.

ive been falling out of love with Minus the Bear over the years
i really like the rhythm and beat of the new song but the lyrics and voice dont do a thing for me
it all worked when it was rapid guitar, not perfectly studio sounding, and all the lyrics were about girls and popping pills/drunk driving 3/3/2010 4:09:28 PM |

yea. I've still enjoyed the new stuff but certainly not as much. Highly Refined Pirates is still my favorite, and I really dug the EPs.
To be fair, Menos El Oso was pretty solid too. Planet of Ice was really my first disappointment with them. A few really good songs and definitely some forgettable ones. 3/3/2010 4:14:51 PM |

I hate to say it, but Minus The Bear may be waning on me too. I think they've shed whatever sound they had with Highly Refined. It was only a slight departure to Beer Commercials and Menos El Oso (both of which, I love). However, Planet of Ice drones on a lot. I still like the album, but it doesn't touch the aforementioned ones to me. Maybe they've actually gotten too highly refined for their own good. 3/5/2010 12:48:18 AM |

Not sure what I think after the first listen through. The first 20 seconds made me think I was listening to something from Flight of the Conchords. It definitely picks up as it goes along, but is not at all what I expected.

Entertaining silly item of the day:
Jack White will be selling the releases from Third Man Records and the White Stripes catalog on newly pressed vinyl at SXSW.
But since they're in Texas, the singles will be on 8" vinyl and the LPs will be on 13".
As for Yeasayer, it's pretty awful. To be fair to them, though, I'm not big on any of these bands that sound like Duran Duran run through an ironic hip-hop filter. ] 3/10/2010 7:20:02 AM |

Quote : | "The Smashing Pumpkins have announced they are now searching for a bassist/keyboardist to replace Ginger Pooley, who recently departed the band in order to be with her family.
Frontman Billy Corgan commented: "Although I am heartbroken that Ginger is leaving the group, I really respect her decision to put her family first. I appreciate everything that she has contributed to The Smashing Pumpkins, and I'm proud of her for being such a great musician and friend."
Corgan added: "We were lucky enough to find drummer Mike Byrne through an open audition process, so why not open the doors again to anyone who might be interested for the bass or keyboard position. As you can see from our past and present, age, race, or a person's background is not an issue. Everyone is truly welcome to audition."
Corgan gave details on how to audition: "Bassists and keyboardists looking to play with The Pumpkins should send their background info (including age, a resume of any bands/recorded work), photos and performance web links via email only, either to pumpkinsbass@gmail.com or pumpkinskeys@gmail.com. Note: only musicians with video clips can be considered. Youtube.com type posts are perfect--that's how Mike[drummer] was found. Final date for submission is March 31st." " |

Holy shit...I cannot think of a less accurate or informative description of the album. I mean, I guess I can see where you're coming from in a really lazy, "THE PRODUCTION IS LIKE FROM THE 80S!!!" way, but in no way does it sound the way you described it. And there aren't any bands that sound like that. You are terrible at describing music. It's worthless and it's anathema to the spirit of music appreciation to use other bands as a crutch to describe a band.
And it is not terrible. This is a pretty clear example of an album where some love it and some hate it. To say that it's terrible would draw too much objection to classify it as terrible.
Also...as for the user who quoted the hook to "Ambling Alp"...They've gotten a lot of crap for those lyrics it seems, but I don't think they're bad. Cliche, sure. But everything that is now cliche was, at one point in time, poignant, simply because of the meaning of the word cliche. For a phrase or an idea to become cliche, it become overused to the point that it loses its meaning. For a phrase or an idea to be overused, it must be worth something or mean something to all those who use it.3/10/2010 1:38:34 PM |
