so where do you guys do your online knife shopping?

I have bought a few times from knifecenter.com, but I am looking for somewhere with a better search interface.

I would love to be able to search for a number of qualities.... blade size, handle material, blade material all at once. maybe i missed this at knifecenter, but anywhere else I should look?

For pricing I always liked yourcornerstore.com but the interface is not like you're looking for. I haven't had a problem with their interface though, they set it up by manufacturer and then model. Since one dude runs it for the most part, things aren't perfect, but the pricing is good. Don't get the shittiest shipping option from Yourcornerstore unless you're willing to wait a while (I usually get three day or two day shipping no matter where I shop, so it's never been an issue for me but some people have said it took forever).

They have a lot of awesome knives in the $300-$1000 range (Particularly around the $500 price point) and do I plan on obtaining some customs there eventually. But obviously as a beater knife or something you don't need to buy a custom unless you've got the money because you can get similar materials from a production knife at a significantly lower cost.




Btw, what handle material, blade steel, blade type and overall size knife are you looking for? Do you want a fixed blade or folding knife and what are you going to want to use it for (EDC, camping, hunting, self defense or perhaps a combination of some of these)? There are a lot of good steels out there right now, so I wouldn't get too stuck on the steel if you find a knife that suits your needs and the only thing that's off is the steel type. Obviously I like CPM-S30V, but there are quite a few other steels that perform really well and that I'm willing to buy. If you're not going to care for the knife, S30V is a good choice while D2, ZDP-189 or M4 would be bad choices. VG-10 and 154CM would be OK choices in terms of corrosion resistance but they may discolor over time if you don't care for them at all. Honestly, you will likely be satisfied with the performance of any of these steels: H1, 440C, VG-10, 154CM, CPM-154CM, D2, CPM-D2, M4, CPM-M4, ZDP-189, CPM-S30V, CPM-S90V. The differences in these steels will be edge holding (S90V is ridiculous in this respect, but S30V is excellent), edge fineness, corrosion resistance (S30V is probably the best here) and toughness vs strength (The CPM steels manage to combine reasonably high levels of both, particularly in S30V). The strength thing usually isn't a major concern in a light use EDC knife, provided you aren't going to abuse it, but it's much more of a concern in a survival knife and a reasonable concern in a self defense knife. Also note that too much edge holding capability makes a knife difficult to resharpen (S90V is stupidly difficult to re-sharpen and ZDP-189 is very difficult, while S30V is reasonably easy to sharpen and still gives you a lot of edge holding capability and a ridiculously fine edge).

The design of the knife can also overcome some deficiencies of the steel it uses, so all of these steels can work well if the knife is properly designed. What I like about S30V is that it gives you strength and high transverse toughness, which allows an EDC knife to be made thinner and allows you to make a survival knife out of S30V (Most stainless steel survival knives are prone to chipping and shattering, but in some environments having a stainless steel survival knife is extremely helpful). S30V also gives you very high corrosion resistance (About 3 times higher than 154CM) and thus is a good choice in an EDC knife, since you often get it dirty or get salt water (Sweat) on it and can't clean it immediately. Corrosion on the secondary bevel will kill your edge, so keep in mind that it's not just a cosmetic issue.

If you get a D2, M4 or ZDP steel, be sure to keep the blade well oiled and NEVER let water sit on the blade for ANY length of time (Especially with ZDP and M4, D2 is more forgiving). As long as you care about them they'll be fine, but it will take more work to keep them in good shape.

Note that Spyderco's H1 steel is literally rust proof (And I mean in terms of water and salt water exposure, you can still induce corrosion in H1 with concentrated chlorine or something though) because it has almost no carbon content at all, but you do make a trade off in edge holding. One nice thing about H1 is that it work hardens quite a bit as you use it and re-sharpen it. So, over time the edge holding actually gets better by a noticeable amount.

Also, get a plain edge knife if you actually plan on using it, because serrations are ridiculous to try to resharpen. Plus, most manufacturers do not give you good serrations. Plain edge knives are much easier to keep razor sharp and they cut like crazy and give you more precise cutting capabilities. Don't mess with partially serrated (Aka - combo-edge) or fully serrated knives, just go straight for the plain edge.

Cold Steel Rajah I or Rajah II (AUS8, the Rajah I is my favorite because of the quality, but the Rajah II is 1/2 the price and performs the same)

Emerson Super Karambit (154CM, I love this one)
Spyderco Tasman Salt (H1, great choice for an everyday carry last ditch self defense weapon)
Spyderco Spyderhawk (H1, larger version of the Tasman Salt and even more deadly)
Spyderco P'kal (S30V, probably the most purpose built self defense folder on the market)


If you can find one of the Emersons, you might want to go for that. The P'kal is an awesome design as well and it has a wave feature just like the Emersons. If you're on a budget, I'd go for the Tasman Salt (It's only ~$50).



Look into these for EDC capable knives that could be used in emergency self defense situations. There is a massive variation in price, build quality and materials here (These range from $30 to $200). All of them are knives I either do own or would own though. Some of these are significantly better than others for defense and some are significantly better than others for EDC, so examine each for your specific needs depending upon which direction you're leaning:

Al Mar SERE 2000 (VG-10, one of the sharpest knives I've ever seen out of the box. Get the satin finish rather than the black blade. Also, don't get the Mini SERE, get the full sized one.)
Al Mar Eagle Ultralight (AUS8, very elegant knife with defense capabilities)

Benchmade 940 (S30V Steel, cool reverse tanto blade)

Again, get plain edged knives rather than fully serrated or partially serrated (AKA - combo edge). I suggest always going for the satin or stone washed finishes over black blades for two reasons (With one exception). First of all, black blades show wear more quickly. Secondly, satin finished or stone washed blades are MUCH more beautiful. The finishes on the blades of these knives (Particularly with the S30V Spyderco knives, all of the Benchmade knives and all of the Emerson knives) look incredible and you'll regret having covered up the metal with a coating. The one exception to this rule is if you end up getting a knife which uses a non-stainless blade steel. In that case the coating can make life easier for you by reducing the possibility for corrosion to occur. The only knives up there that don't use stainless are the Benchmade 710 (D2 steel), the Spyderco Gayle Bradley (M4), the Spyderco Stretch (If you get the ZDP-189 steel version) and the Caly 3 (If you get the laminated ZDP-189) and those Spyderco's aren't offered with black coated blades anyway. Note that the laminated Caly 3 blade is similar to a coated blade because the laminate is 420J2, which is stainless. So not much of the ZDP-189 is exposed. Also note that the Zero Tolerance knives are not available without a coating, so you'll have to live with that if you get one of those knives.

As far as what I was looking for, blade steel wasn't as big a concern as other features, but the more stuff that could narrow my choices down, the better.

I have EDC pretty well covered with a couple of Delicas and a couple of leatherman tools that I rotate between, nothing fancy.

My next knife purchase will likely be another small fixed blade for general rambling in the woods. Blade size ~3", no wood grips, fine edge, probably drop point. Right now I use a Boker Cordoba for this, which has been good, just looking for something different. price range somewhere just south of ~$100 or so.

Well, if you're willing to go up into the mid $100's and you want really high build quality, an incredible edge and one of the best possible steels for a knife of this size then I suggest a Bark River knife. The Gunny and Bravo 1 are some of the best outdoor knives you could possibly buy. They are made of A2 tool steel (An incredible semi-stainless steel which will be significantly less prone to corrosion than 1095, but will still rust obviously and also holds a fine edge like crazy) with beautiful linen or canvas micarta handles. They have excellent craftsmanship, check out the colors and quality here.

A suggestion for a smaller fixed blade (Just under 3" blade) is the RAT Cutlery/ESEE Izula, which is a $50 knife and it is capable of a LOT considering the size. It's made of 1095 steel and it has an excellent heat treatment. I will be buying one soon as it's a good knife for EDC or outdoor use. I like the pink one because it's visible if you drop it outdoors and I like pink. One of the only SOG knives I'll recommend is this Team Leader. It comes with a very special Duratech 20CV Stainless steel which is a particle metallurgy steel like CPM-S30V. The price reflects this, it's $170, but a good design IMO. A lot of their knives come kind of dull from the factory, but these Team Leaders in 20CV come razor sharp.

Spyderco Bill Moran Drop Point. This one uses a VG-10 blade and the price is good. It's not as thick as some of the other designs though. The orange one is good for the outdoors and is a limited edition knife.

The Fallkniven Pilot Survival Knife is possibly one of the best choices you could make given your criteria (Laminated VG-10 steel, full stainless). It's right at $100 and is built EXTREMELY well. Notice the full tang (The tang actually sticks out of the bottom of the handle). The sheath is not leather and that's a good thing when you're outdoors. This setup is great for humid environments.

Im liking that Bark River you posted, and the RAT/ESEE RC-3. The RAT is in my price range, and seems to fit what I was looking for. I do prefer the leather sheath of the Bark Rivers.Thanks for the suggestions, I will post back in here whenever I decide/buy.

NASA and Old Dominion University have offered up an experimental payload for the craft's maiden flight, which will be conducted in Norfolk, Virginia. later this year. The instrumentation put aboard the craft will be used to collect data on moisture content in soil.

The first step towards that test flight -- the inflation of the craft -- has just been carried out. The craft seems to be holding together perfectly as it rests in the Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, AL.

Among the diverse roles E-Green Technologies says the craft can fulfill are battlefield surveillance, missile defense warning, electronic countermeasures, weapons platforms, Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) services, weather monitoring, broadcast communications and communications relays.

The company hopes production demands will create hundreds of new textile jobs in Alabama where the kevlar coat is produced. Boeing is building the twelve Block 2F GPS satellites for the US Air Force, which will continue to manage the constellation. New features include a doubling in the predicted signal accuracy; new L5 signals for civil and commercial aviation; a new "M-code" and variable power levels for the military that boosts performance and provides better resistance to jamming in hostile environments; a 12-15 year design life; and reduced operating costs. A new reprogrammable processor is also being used that can receive software uploads for improved system operation.

When the GPS system was first designed, a feature called "Selective Availability" was added that would create errors in the civilian signal, thus degrading performance. President Clinton ordered Selective Availability turned off in 1996, and the designs for Block 2F satellites were the first to not include SA hardware.

"The 12 GPS 2F satellites will provide improved signals that will enhance the precise global positioning, navigation and timing services supporting both the warfighter and the growing civilian needs of our global economy," said Col. Dave Madden, commander of the Global Positioning Systems Wing at the Space and Missile Systems Center.

GPS 2F-1 is currently taking over the Plane B, Slot 2 position of the constellation, replacing GPS 2A-27 launched in September 1996. It is a primary position in the network, which is divided into six orbital groupings with several satellites flying in each.

GPS 2A-27 will move into another slot in order to shore up weaker, but less critical parts of the network. Plane B, Slot 2 was originally supposed to be occupied by GPS 2R-20 in March 2009, but problems developed which precluded its usage.

Previous GPS launches over the past 20 years relied on Delta 2 rockets for delivery into orbit, but the $121 million Block 2F satellites use the larger and more capable Delta 4 and Atlas 5 rockets that can propel it directly into its orbit. Previous launches with Delta 2 rockets needed booster motors and several days to reach the desired position.

GPS 2F-1 is the 61st GPS satellite to launch, and the 50th GPS launch on a Delta rocket. Ground control will undergo a series of testing procedures over the next 90 to 120 days, after which GPS 2F-1 will enter service. The next satellite, GPS 2F-2, is currently scheduled for launch in November.

Three new Russian GLONASS satellites will attempt to launch in August in a bid to restore global coverage to their competing system, after being delayed from March. The first satellites in Europe's Galileo system are not expected to launch until 2014, but their signals could theoretically be used with GPS signals for even greater resolution with the properly designed hardware."

Hello son. I would like to buy a small fixed blade(<7" or so) that I can carry on my belt at work. Use is all over the place, so it should be reasonably tough. Budget is $75, but closer to $50 would make me happy. What should I buy?

the pocket clip on my endura 4 broke when it snagged on a wrought iron handrail at deemarie's parents' house when i was loading up some of her stuff the other day

That's because nobody cares about aviation.

There was a time when it might have been interesting to be a pilot, but today it isn't even worth mentioning. Nobody is going to talk about it or listen to you talk about it, even for 5 seconds, and people certainly aren't going to go up with you if you do fly. It's boring, pointless and downright annoying to hear about.

F-35C is the Naval variant of the aircraft designed for carrier duty

Lockheed Martin has announced a milestone in its F-35 Joint Strike fighter program. The Navy version of the F-35, dubbed the F-35C, made its inaugural flight on June 6 from the U.S. Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base. The first flight for the aircraft lasted 57 minutes with Jeff Knowles at the controls. Knowles is a retired Naval Aviator and was the lead test pilot on the F-117 stealth fighter program.

The F-35C differs from its land-based F-35 siblings in that the Naval variant has larger wing and control surfaces to provide better low speed handling for carrier approaches and landings. The air frame is also stronger on the F-35C to allow it to withstand harsh at-sea conditions and carrier landings.

DefenseNews reports that the Navy will be purchasing 680 of the short-take-off-vertical-landing F-35B and F-35C aircraft. However, the Navy has not yet decided on the final mix of aircraft. Lockheed officials have stated that the F-35 program is three flights ahead of schedule for 2010 after completing 93 test sorties so far as of June 1.

The entire F-35 program has been under scrutiny by the DoD with recent projections estimating that the total price tag from the program could reach a staggering $382 billion. Each of the F-35 aircraft is expected to cost about $92.4 million.

"For the first time in military aviation history, supersonic, radar-evading stealth comes with short takeoff/vertical landing capability," said Bob Price, Lockheed Martin's F-35 U.S. Marine Corps program manager. "The supersonic F-35B can deploy from small ships and austere bases near front-line combat zones, greatly enhancing combat air support with higher sortie-generation rates." The F-35B will enter service for the Marines, the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force and Royal Navy, and the Italian Air Force and Navy.

All F-35 JSF variants are designed to hold up to 3,000 pounds of munitions internally and to be able to launch all its weapons at maximum supersonic speed. DefenseNews reports that the test flight took place at the offshore supersonic test track at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland.

I have a few new knives to post cause I haven't updated this shit in a long time.

I also have a custom knife coming sons, but it's going to be 4 months before it's complete. Randy Doucette is making me one of his knives called "The Outsider". I'm getting jeweled (Engine turned) and purple anodized .090" titanium liners, purple anodized titanium pocket clip, carbon fiber bolsters and green G-10 handles (Red G-10 is the second choice if the green G-10 can't be obtained). The blade is going to be .200" CPM-S30V (I may be off on that number, but I'm pretty sure that's correct. Regardless, it's thick as hell) with file work on the spine which serves the same purpose as jimping. The blade is so nasty, it has a deeply hollow ground primary grind and a flat ground secondary grind, which produces a sharply curved yokote where the grinds meet. It also has a reverse tapered swage (The swage starts at full thickness at the tip and gets thinner as it moves back towards the bolsters), which gives it excellent tip strength. The flat ground secondary grind is hand rubbed in a longitudinal direction, as is the spine of the blade, while the hollow ground primary edge and the swage have grain lines running in the transverse direction. The pivot and stop pin will be heat treated for added strength and it will have bronze phosphorous washers. This one will have thumb studs (They are only added by request generally, since it's a flipper knife by design).

His knives are SICK son, especially his Tanto blades and Karambits. I'll just let his work speak for itself; if any of you understand blade design, you'll be able to see how nasty his knives are.

You'll really enjoy that knife, photos don't do the digital camo G-10 justice. I carry mine just about everyday, although I rotate in some other knives as well like the SERE 2000.

Yeah, that shyte will hold 400+lbs like 4-5" back from the lock. It's a beast with a lot of videos to prove it. It's also sharp as shit, it will take a hand off in one chop with proper technique.


Btw, it's pretty hilarious how some fools think they can come in here and actually fuck with a master of mind trickery. They get sent home with their tail between their legs screaming for their mother.

What are some good tutorials for passing the PPL written? I'm familiar with exams4pilots.org, but after a while, that's just mind-numbing.

i can pass the written, but not with a great score. most places want you to get a 90 on a pre-test before they'll give you the real one. obviously, as a professional aviator, i know all the stuff i need to know to be a private pilot. all the stuff i don't know that's on the test is stupid bullshit that doesn't matter, and i have a really hard time getting motivated to study it. i just want a DVD course or something that I can watch a few times and go kill the written exam.

This ASA booklet I have is supposed to have the same questions they ask on the written. It's called the ASA test prep booklet. Check that out and see if you can find reviews on it that verify this, but from my understanding it does have the same questions as the real written.

Also note that these guys offer some seriously nasty products and if you're in a line of work that can or does involve lethal force encounters I'd definitely consider some of these pieces. The UUK is a particularly devastating knife. It's got the advantages of a Karambit in terms of the angle of the blade with respect to the handle, but it also has the benefits of a broad spear-point blade. You can literally punch the knife into someone's chest, neck, etc. Or you can do incredibly nasty slashing work with it. You develop huge power with the 45 degree blade angle.

Also, the Fixed Blade Fly is a particularly nasty fighting knife and is, as the name implies, a fixed blade version of the Spyderco Szabofly balisong. This one is made by David Mosier, a well known custom knife maker. I've handled an IKBS equipped folding knife of his and I can tell you that his work is top notch.

For a small but potent back up weapon for law enforcement and military, the Felony Stop is an excellent choice. It's similar to the Midnight Express but smaller. TOPS Knives makes a production version and it's quite nasty. The angle allows you to punch the knife into someone and make powerful slash cuts, just like with the UUK. Similar concept to the Ka-Bar TDI knives, but better executed in my opinion.
