Tried out playing online, man its stressful . Haven't made it quite towards ranked matches, played and won one, but played the hell out of unranked. Only had one guy get OTG on me, but otherwise no real bad combo problems. I ended up going like 28-6 overall or something. 3/3/2011 8:54:41 PM |

^The thing I like about the unranked matches is that you can instantly rematch. If you find someone who is a decent player/about the same skill level/doesn't resort to cheap tactics/has a good internet connection you can keep rematching them as long as they are cool with it. It would be nice if you could do that on the ranked matches but people would probably abuse it to improve their rank so I understand why you can't. 3/4/2011 9:08:02 AM |

Yup, checked all the cables and reconnected everything for good measure. Got to play for about another half hour last night and thought that everything was OK again. Just now attempted to get into a game, and the system made a single beep and froze. It's done that 4 times in a row now, so I'm pretty sure this one is toast.
Oh well, guess I'll just go pull the other 360 out of the living room until I can get a replacement. 3/6/2011 2:24:19 PM |

I have learned an incredibly valuable lesson this weekend. If Phoenix is the last person standing on your opponent's team and you see that they have 5 bars stacked, lightly smack her a few times and then run like a pansy bitch until the clock expires. It's so incredibly rewarding when you prevent her from transforming while the person using her is going insane trying to chase you down to get you to knock her out. 3/7/2011 10:14:40 AM |

You should be really good at countering Sentinel, Dante, and Akuma then. I'm expecting a wave of Shuma-Gorath today.
Also, god damn them for having 2 She-Hulks in the Grand Finals at Final Round. I've been playing She-Hulk since launch assholes. I doubt you'll see a lot of people picking her up but still.

Ha. I'd say I suck at this game. My problem is that I have super high standards for fighting games, but I'm not as young as I used to be and I sure as hell don't have as much free time anymore. I only play 3 characters exclusively, and I really only have 1 basic combo chain with each of them. I don't do aerial assists with 1 exception, and I constantly forget to use advancing guard. I never think to snapback, and I never intentionally use OTG attacks because I think they're pretty gay. I pick characters to fight with because I like the character, not because they have some incredible abilities/assists in the game. (Read: Guile in SFIV.) If Taskmaster wasn't such a complete badass in this game, I'd probably get rolled a lot more frequently. As it stands, my nemesis in this game is Sentinel. At LEAST 2/3 of my losses come from teams which use him. I still think the whole dev/testing team who decided that it was OK for Sentinel to be as overpowered as he is should be completely and unapologetically fired. The only way that sorry shit is getting fixed is if there's a new version of the game which has to be bought.
Grrr! I'm old! And I like to complain! 3/17/2011 12:59:45 PM |

^^If you're having that much trouble, try Player Match. It's easier to just have fun instead of obssessing about winning, plus you'll see a wider variety of fighters.

^Yeah I mostly stick to player match now. I'm a little better on there but not by much. I really do wish they'd have an option for taking out timed games though, I've lost so many games that I know I could have won if it weren't for the timer.

^^ I complain a lot because I'm used to winning in evenly-matched play. This game ain't always so evenly matched.
I use Captain America, Taskmaster, and Deadpool. Captain America has almost no flash at all, but I find that more often than not, you can really screw with peoples' heads with the Shield Slash and Charging Star. Captain America is supposed to be my anti-Sentinel guy, but there's only so much you can do when he has no overhead and the cartwheel move is completely vulnerable to everything in the universe. (Seriously, Capcom? This is insultingly stupid.) Taskmaster is just plain sick all around, and I have some fair combos with him. Deadpool is my keepaway guy, but he's also the weakest link on the team since I have yet to experiment with any of the crazy combos he is capable of. I had started out with Wolverine as my 3rd, but needed someone with some better ranged attacks.

So I played a rank match earlier where someone's team was a combination of M.O.D.O.K., Phoenix, and some other character. At the start of the match, he flies M.O.D.O.K. to the top of the screen, and then starts spamming assists. I don't realize what he's doing at first since none of his attacks are landing. Then I notice how quickly his hyper meter is building, and his main character's out of range. In hindsight, I guess I could have superjumped or attempted some angled attack. Are those the only way to handle someone playing keepaway to build hyper for Dark Phoenix? 3/17/2011 9:21:14 PM |
ShinAntonio Zinc Saucier 18947 Posts user info edit post |
If someone has Phoenix, your best bet is to use a snapback as soon as possible to bring her in and then tear her apart. In your case you could punish the assists he calls in (assists take 1.5 times damage) and force him to fight. Super jumping could work, so could angled beams or supers. It really depends on the character. In any case, you want use a snapback to get Phoenix in ASAP (also a good idea with Sentinel to avoid dealing with X-Factor). Of course, you need a plan to take both of them down, regular Phoenix can tear you apart if the other person knows what they're doing. 3/17/2011 11:05:22 PM |

Thanks. The biggest issue with taking out the assists was the camera focused on his character up in the sky, and I couldn't see myself or the assisting character. I'll try that next time though. 3/17/2011 11:15:55 PM |

My favorite method of beating Phoenix is to save her for last, beat up on her a little bit... and then not finish her off so she can't transform. Just keep running away from her and let the clock run out. (Deadpool is a pro in this way due to the double jump, wall jump, and teleport.) Some of the very best rage messages I've gotten have been this way. 3/18/2011 7:59:45 AM |

I would think a keep away strategy could be foiled if the person used Phoenix's plethora of projectiles...like her tracking fireball. I'm a fan of using Phoenix as a regular fighter though and not just a 5 HC gimmick
If someone was spamming assist characters, especially in the way you mentioned, I would think of doing a hypercombo. If you got the timing right - trivial if they kept spamming - then you would likely kill the assist, especially if you did a team hyper.
I might start playing this more, since last night's Black Ops session was soured by some of the most exceptional camping and host advantage I've ever seen. 3/18/2011 8:27:10 AM |

Running down the clock on Phoenix is an acceptable strategy. Her tracking fireballs only travel so far so it is possible to completely avoid them. Her teleport is damned quick though so watch out for that. I usually bring her in and then use Dorm's Stalking Flare, Chaotic Flame, and Purification towers to chip her down before she can X-factor. 3/18/2011 8:36:14 AM |

I've been rolling with dormammu, deadpool, and phoenix. My dorm game is pretty good, deadpool passable, but phoenix just doesn't have the life to work in my rotation it seems. She takes a combo and she's dead, and I rotate frequently enough that I hurt my other characters by saving her in reserve. Do most people only bring her out with 5 HC gauge? 3/19/2011 11:21:21 AM |

Doesn't help that I use her to assist frequently, and often for some reason she comes out in the middle of the opponent's combo and dies witthout me even realizing she's out.
What's been frustrating me as well is the damn tap out commandl. I'm used to MvC2 where it was a command, not a push and hold. It caused me to lose a few fighters, if not matches, when the characters would not switchno matter how furiously I held assist bumpers 3/19/2011 11:37:50 PM |
disco_stu All American 7436 Posts user info edit post |
Her assists are terrible (except maybe TK shot) so don't even chance it when you're playing. Playing Dormammu, you know how easy it is to punish assists with hyper beams. If you're strong with her teleport mixups bring her out as a main if you want, but almost never before you have 5 hyper bars. I say almost never because I've seen some Phoenix player use her well and kick ass because the opponent isn't expecting to see her early.
I think dorm and phoenix isn't a great combo, though. Dorm is very hyper hungry to do good damage with him.
I am terrible with Iron Man. I want him to be good. His launcher whiffs way too much, and cr.L, cr.M, st.H is counter-intuitive. I went like 0-15 and dropped from 9th Lord back to Fighter in Ranked trying to make his shit work. Went back to She-hulk and promptly fought back to >50% (200+ matches in Ranked total) wins and 8th Lord.
She-Hulk, Dormammu, Dr. Doom.
Dr. Doom is really strong.

Yeah, I use her TK shot, I really like having a quick projectile I can call out. I originally picked those three because, well, I like the characters but I don't think I can use Phoenix if she requires 5 HC to even be outside. I use my HC's too much for that.
I might give She-Hulk or X-23 a shot. Part of what I was trying to do was replicate my team from MvC2, which was Gambit, CapCom, and Rogue. Rogue was my rush down character, capable of fighting close and fast to overwhelm defenses while calling in powerful assists, and I've been on the receiving end of a few times with X-23 and Wolverine. Not too much a fan of Wolverine though.
Does anyone use Deadpool, and have trouble using his gun shooting attacks? Often I'm trying to fire his guns a few times or in the air (just D->R + L.A.) and he always does this backflip + ninja stars thing. Not very effective and annoying as shit...to both me and the opponent 3/22/2011 2:45:16 PM |

We'll keep this post updated with any other changes that players discover.
Change list (Version 1.02) -
-Sentinel's health is now 905,000, down from 1,300,000. (DarkRagna says he lives at 904,900 damage, but dies at 905,000. Thanks!) -The Haggar/Spencer freeze glitch is fixed. (Tip from trag) -The Spencer loop shown in this video is gone. (Stark tipped in that "Spencer's M followup to ground QCF now bounces him up instead of returning him to the ground, so you don't land and can't keep it going") -Hitstun deterioration on Akuma's air Tatsu is now more severe, preventing his infinite. I do use Deadpool, but really only in a keepaway capacity. The motion for the guns is QCF + punch, but if you do QCF + punch + another punch in quick succession, you will get the thrown items instead. The grenade is quite useful, but I also like the shuriken quite a bit. Best use of the thrown items is to super jump in your opponent's direction and then throw a ninja item since it will cause Deadpool to fall back in the direction from which he came. It's not always completely safe, but it can really throw somebody off when they anticipate your downward arc and you change course in midair. Also, do be aware that using Deadpool's guns at the start of a jump leave him completely vulnerable for the duration of the jump. You want to try to use guns as late as possible.3/22/2011 10:09:48 PM |

Haha, no shit, probably because most of those players use Sentinel
^Yeah, I've definitely seen places where his fall back works to draw in the opponent and fake them out so it does work out more often than not. I've had success using them in keep away situations where the opponent keeps pressing. The "punch + another punch" part is probably what screws me up, since I tend to spam the attack buttons when putting out a move, so I'll try doing it more controlled . Thanks!3/23/2011 8:03:04 AM |

Wow, no joke. I'm firmly in the camp that this was richly deserved, and it amuses me that some people feel that this was too much.
I did see a good combo with Deadpool yesterday which I've probably seen before but the mechanics never clicked in my brain. I can't ever seem to get him to do anything substantial for an aerial, but I watched a guy do a 2-3 hit ending with a downward strike which then chained into a Katanarama + Chimichangas wall bounce into a Cutting Time. Now that's pretty decent damage. Gonna have to learn how to do that. 3/23/2011 9:52:31 AM |
