"Bryan Chooses to Return to NC State

Junior tight end George Bryan has decided to return to NC State for his senior season, despite being one of the top tight end prospects in the 2011 NFL Draft.

All potential early entry candidates had to file their paperwork with the NFL over the weekend if they were going to enter the draft, and Bryan chose to return. Bryan was rated the No. 4 NFL tight end prospect by CBSSports.com and the No. 5 NFL tight end prospect by ESPN.com.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pounder is a two-time first-team All-ACC selection. He finished the 2010 regular season with 32 catches for 344 yards and three touchdowns. "

^ Awesome. Could be a three time All ACC TE. Would that merit him having his numbered honored/retired?

Ovies tweets an NCSU Release: "Russell Wilson plans to turn his attention to baseball and will leave next month for spring training with Rockies."

i know ^ said the same, except for the "turn his attention to baseball" part ... which sounds like no more football

Eh, he's going to continue his grad degree, so the option is still there to return. Still nothing definitive, as far as I'm concerned.

Time to hand the keys to Glennon, anyway.

Along the lines of Ovies' tweet, WRAL has an article titled "Wilson plans to focus on baseball"

A quote from RW:
Quote :
"
"At this point in my life, the best thing for me is to concentrate fully on baseball in the same way that I concentrated fully on football over the past six months," Wilson said. "It is only fair for everyone involved that I give baseball the same time and attention that I have given football. Ultimately, decisions about my athletic future will be made based on my potential to succeed at the highest professional level.""

And another from the article:
Quote :
"Wilson, who just completed his redshirt junior season on the gridiron, intends to continue to pursue his graduate degree at NC State and will keep open the option of returning for his senior season of football.

"

when is the absolute latest he has to announce?

seems like TOB and co. would want to start game planning one way or another.

^^Maybe he already has. TOB isn't really known for showing his hand when it comes to players on the injured list. He may be doing something similar here.

I'm assuming he has all the way up until fall camp starts to make a decision one way or another. Let's hope we know before then though.

^I'd imagine the Rockies would want to know before that. That whole "being an amateur" and "playing professional sports" rule is alien to me. What options does he have in relation to that? i.e. can he tell the Rockies to shove it and re-enter the MLB draft? or does he have to get their permission to come back to school?

Of course the Rockies want to know before then, even though by that time his season will be about a week from wrapping up. Dude asked for the last possible day for him to decide, and, technically, that's the last possible day.

Football and baseball eligibility are mutually exclusive. No, a player who has signed can't re-enter the draft. Why would Wilson want to do that anyway? Unless there are stipulations in his contract (I'm pretty sure there aren't) he can do whatever he wants to do.

Pretty sure he can't tell them to "shove it and re-enter the draft." I also think they would allow him to play his senior year and just re-join the organization. Now if he comes back and then tries to go to the NFL, then they'll have to sit down and talk. Don't know exactly how MLB compares to the rest of the professional leagues, but I'm guessing the Rockies "own" Russel Wilson's rights as a baseball player for a little while (or as long as the contract states).

He's already redshirted so he would sit out a year to play one or if he went DII he would be able to play two years iirc

Glennon will graduate in the spring, he can play a year without sitting out at a DI school

And FSU is going to be really, really good next year

^ Actually he would have to apply for a waiver from the NCAA and they would decide whether he was transferring for football purposes or academic purposes for that to happen. No guarantee by any means with they do things.

It's certainly no guarantee that would be granted. We're talking about the NCAA here, the most inconsistent governing body in sports.

I reckon anything's possible

But this sort of thing happens a whole lot in football in basketball and I've never heard of a guy being denied without some sort of extenuating circumstances

Even Masoli got the OK

Since Glennon is graduating in the Spring could he just transfer to another school as a grad student. Kind of like Knox, or whatever his name is, who transferred from Alabama to play bball for UNC. He didn't have to sit out a year.

I would hate to see him transfer, but I would prefer for Wilson to come back for another year.

They granted it to Masoli so he could dodge his punishment at Oregon. I am pretty sure we can consider it a matter of formality.

I'm pretty sure Glennon would have to sit out a year or go play Div II ball

Also, Wilson has a contract with the Rockies, would they let him come back???????

Why do you think that? From stuff I read on the blogs it sounds like he'll have two...which is why i posed the question here.

If he graduates in the spring, he can transfer to a D-I school and, if a waiver is approved by the NCAA, he can play immediately.

If he doesn't, he can transfer to a D-I school, sit a year and have a year of eligibility left.

Or he can go to D-II and play two years immediately.

Four years of eligibility in five seasons. That's it.

That's easy to say when it's not you that has to make the life changing decision. Put yourself in his shoes for a second. You have to decide to transfer from State when there is a possibility you can be the starter in the fall. You HAVE to prepare yourself for the fact that you're going to be sitting a year and commit to that reality BEFORE you transfer. If you are accepted into another university and the NCAA waives the year wait then that's a bonus. I don't think he and his family are naive enough to just assume that it will 100% happen before he leaves though.

I just think its a gamble to go to another school where the possibility of not starting is bigger than the school you are currently at. You never know if there's another Russel Wilson as School X.

If he knows for sure that he's got the goods and that the third string won't give him a run for his money, then I think it would be in his best interests to remain at State and wait it out one more year. Get back in the wait room, work your ass off, work harder with QB coaches and experts, and then set the world on fire in 2012.

Isn't that what Sports Talk is for in general?

Besides, lately I've been looking at it like this: The starter position is his to earn. TOB has shown, especially this year with the running backs, that backups can become starters if they show more heart and ability than the veterans. If he can't beat Wilson, then he doesn't need to be the starter. I think he'd be selling himself short if he transferred.

Half of you need to get your info straight.

1) Glennon only has 2 years of eligibility to play.
2) He can transfer down a division without having to sit out.
3) If he is graduating and will be playing as a grad student, he can't just transfer to another school and play. He can only do that if the school he is "transferring" to offers a graduate program that State does not offer.
4) Masoli was kicked off the team, not out of the school, which is why the decision was overturned and he was able to play for another program. We all know why he left, and the NCAA tried to stop it, but that technicality made it possible.

This. Everything I've read has FSU in atleast the top 10, one guy had them at #2. They are loaded and Manuel should get better as the season progresses. Jimbo has done a good job turning that program around.

EJ Manuel will be a much better QB than Ponder was. Thats why they are in the top 10. I don't disagree with that. I think they will be very tough and their defense could be the best in the ACC.
