Got some pretty decent face-value seats through UNC's ticket system tonight. Can't wait.

"The N.C. State vs. UNC basketball rivalry has been upstaged in recent seasons by the Tar Heels’ series against Duke.

But dating back to the earliest days of the ACC, the Wolfpack and Heels have staged as many unforgettable games as any other in the nation.

Here are five of the most memorable.

•March 8, 1975 _ Greensboro

UNC 70, State 66

David Thompson’s final college game was marked by frustration, tears and pain. Battling leg cramps and a bruised knee in Greensboro Coliseum, the superstar wingman was held to 16 points in the ACC Tournament championship game. The Tar Heels, led by freshman Phil Ford’s 24 points and five assists, took a lead late, went to their four corners delay and claimed the league’s guaranteed NCAA Tournament bid. Maryland got an at-large bid on the merits of its regular-season title showing.

Thompson and teammates Monte Towe, Mo Rivers, Kenny Carr, Phil Spence and Tim Stoddard had one of the best teams in the country. But unable to defend their 1974 NCAA title, the team declined an invitation to the NIT. After beating New Mexico State, the Tar Heels lost to Syracuse in the NCAA.

•Jan. 17, 1979 – Raleigh

UNC 70, State 69

The lingering memory of the game is Dudley Bradley’s game-winning dunk a second or two after he stripped Wolfpack guard Clyde Austin of possession near mid-court.

But it’s rarely mentioned that before Bradley’s play, the Pack had staged an incredible comeback, rallying from a 40-19 halftime deficit in Reynolds Coliseum.

The outcome went far toward ruining State’s already sinking season. Norm Sloan’s team finished 3-9 in the ACC and 18-12 overall after having been ranked fourth nationally in December.

•March 12, 1983 _ Atlanta

State 91, UNC 84 (OT)

A stunning offensive performance in the ACC Tournament semifinals served as national springboard game for Jim Valvano’s third Wolfpack team.

With a lineup that included Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins and Brad Daugherty, the nationally fifth-ranked Tar Heels were favored by nine points in the Omni, but couldn’t stop State playmaker Sidney Lowe (26 points, seven rebounds, five assists) and big man Thurl Bailey (17 points, 14 rebounds).

A day later, State took out second-ranked Virginia in the championship game, 81-78.

•Jan. 22, 1992 _ Raleigh

State 99, UNC 88

Against overwhelming odds, State coach and former player Les Robinson ran his record in the series to 2-1 with a shocking win at Renyolds.

UNC was ranked 10th nationally, favored by 16 points and was working its way toward a national title in 1993. Robinson’s second State team was 8-6 en route to a 12-18 (6-10 ACC) record. Forward Tom Gugliotta played the game of his life _ 36 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocked shots and four steals. The Pack shot 55 percent and led almost all the way.

“You may never see a better game than the one Googs played tonight,” Robinson said.

When they met later in Chapel Hill, UNC was ranked fourth, but State won again (99-94) when Gugliotta had 24 points, Mark Davis 25 and Kevin Thompson 29.

•March 11, 2007 _ Tampa, Fla.

UNC 89, State 80

The ACC championship game turned out to be a haunting “what if” afternoon for first-year State coach Sidney Lowe. After finishing regular season with a 5-11 league record, the Wolfpack rallied behind playmaker Engin Atsur to take out Duke, Virginia and Virginia Tech and earn a crack a the eighth-ranked Heels in the title game. UNC’s depth was the decisive factor, but both teams shot better than 54 percent. Five Carolina players finished in double digit scoring. State got 28 points from Bradnon Costner. The Pack landed an NIT bid and reached the third round. But had Lowe been able to win a league title in his first season, it’s conceivable he could used the momentum to his favor in recruiting.

i remember the '92 game well and i agree 20 years later i can only recall a handful of games where anyone played better than Guggs that night.

I remember my preacher making a joke during his sermon that Sunday that State had 99 points off of 33, 3-pointers.

That was an amazing game.

I'm glad that article didn't bring up the late 90's game where State led by 8 with a minute left and had four consecutive turnovers trying to inbound the ball against Carolina's full court pressure. That has to be our worst loss of all-time against any opponent.

Hopefully this is a victory.

Realistically a moral victory would suffice.

A blowout after the way they've played the last few games could be devastating.

I just don't think it's possible for us to win this thanks to the incoming foul calls and general front court debauchery on both sides of the ball.

I would love to be proved wrong.

I think they missed the year where CC Harrison tied the ACC record of 9 3 pointers in an ACC game to beat them at the Dean Dome.

Yeah, fuck moral victories. If we compete on the glass and stay out of foul trouble, there is no reason why we can't win this game. There is a talent gap, but it isn't the grand canyon that's its been most of the last decade. Depth shouldn't even be an issue in this game since UNC really only plays 7 guys (starters + Hairston, McAdoo) too. Keep it close, make them work on defense, and squeak out a win in the end.

UNC favored by 13, i predicted 12.5 somewhere here. Sounds about right, not touching this one.

-1000 / +760 on the State moneyline which means they are giving us around 11% chance to win or so.

Do we have any idea who's on the officiating crew tonight?

AlsoI can't find the link but a week or two ago duke basketball report had some info about fouls. Carolina has the fewest PF called against them and the most opponent PFs in the league while we we're at second for most fouls and fewest called against in the conference. Additionally Carolina opponents get less FT opportunities that the rest of the conference.

Fact of the matter is we won't be allowed to play physical against them and that will be a huge detriment to us.

gtfo with this moral victory crap. this isn't peewee where everybody gets a trophy. you either win or lose.

it is possible for us to win, but i'm not counting on anything. let's just not suck, and keep the zebra-blaming at a minimum for a change.

go fack.

We really tend to suffer when our starters are on the bench. I feel like the starting 5 can play with anybody in the country (see first 10 mins of each half against Syracuse). I think the key is keeping the Carolina runs at a minimum when Zo is taking a breather.

There isn't one way to beat UNC. FSU and UNLV did it with 3s, 25/59 combined (approx. 1/3 of pts. scored), but turned the ball over 15 times. Kentucky shot terrible from deep, 4/17, but only turned the ball over 9 times.
The opponent's average pts., rebounds, shooting % etc... in their 3 losses isn't too far off our season averages ( 84 vs 77 pts. , 41 vs. 38 Rebounds, 13 vs. 13 TOs, 45% vs 47% FG, and 36% vs. 36% 3pt).
