but a lot of times they're based on such tiny sample sizes that they don't really matter. bringing in pitcher A because batter B is hitting .100 off him in 10 ABs just isn't a good justification to make a change, but that's the kind of crap joe girardi makes decisions on because it's what his big ass binder says. i'm not saying it's never a smart move. if some guy hasn't hit lefties for shit for 5 years then yeah, go for it. but a lot of times those decisions aren't based on that much information, and you're just lengthening the time of the game when you don't need to when the nature of batter vs. pitcher is that the batter is probably going to make an out anyway. but i guess people feel smart when it works 90% of the time. idk.

Shrewd contract negotiating by the Mets. I wonder if they learned that trick from the Knicks or vice versa.

Go Tribe! I've been skeptical after starting last season 30-15 and collapsing as Detroit picked up steam. After finishing a 3 game sweep of the Tigers today though I feel a little better about this year. Especially after having Masterson go toe to toe with him this afternoon in a 2-1 win.

You remember when he wasnt considered the best hitter in the game? O yea that was 3 years ago.

So by your arguement, he is fat so he cant be the best hitter. gg

he's a much better hitter than Hamilton, you're definitely not biased as a Tigers fan

pretty sure Pujols has been considered the best hitter in the game until this year

but yeah, keep fighting the good fight for Fat Miggy

Sounds like a lot of hate from a twins fan who just lost a tough one

Yea hamilton looked great last year (super sarcasm) You are using 2 months of games this year to determine this?

And pujols was def not considered the best hitter in the game last year or this year.

Step off the ledge mah friend. At least you guys have some promising young pitchers and i like glen perkins a lot. Should be your closer.

Kemp is also better

and Pujols was by far the best hitter in the league 2 years ago

i'm just being non-biased, and not a Tigers homer

don't get mad cause I remember when Cabrera was in Florida and could actually run the bases as well as hit

doesn't matter if he's a fatass when he's hitting GW homers like he did today, but don't act like he didn't get fat when he got his last contract

how about this, let me rephrase my statement that caused the vaginal flare-up

Thx matt capps for that 0-2 meatball you just gave the best fat hitter and argueably the best hitter in the game.

though Prince is the best fat base runner on your team

also Sandoval is probably a better fat contact hitter

i'm not saying he's not a top hitter, I still think Pujols is better (even with this season's slow start)

you can't disregard 2 months of Hamilton and then act like Fat Albert's 2 months mean he's done

yeah thats some crazy shit there too, but what i'm talking about was a traditional horizontal rectangle eye black, it was just like twice the size of what normal players wear

but i guess that pic is evidence that he really likes eyeblack

his likability shift over the last year is like the opposite of Lebron

you may disagree as a fan of another team in the NL East, but he just doesn't come across as the dick he seemed to be when he blew a kiss after a minor league homer or whatever he did

so what's your definition of a "good season"? every year since 2008, with the exception of 2010, he's had what a majority of people would consider good seasons. i mean, i guess if your standards are like, MVP caliber, then no, but then that pretty much excludes all but 3 people from each league.

how about this,

he has had 1 full season where his OPS is over .850

typically 30 players/year have an OPS over .850

he has been in that class only once

He was mike cameron in 2010, striking out 170 times and being successful in SB attempts 55% of the time (which was league worst for anyone with over 10 sb's). He only got on base 31% of the time.

he was an above average OF in 2008 and 2009

someone put him in the same sentence as Miguel Cabrera, so I used that as a benchmark.

He does look like he gets it now, but my point was that it is too early to put him in the cabrera, ryan braun, josh hamilton, albert pujols, etc group.

Boobs is right, Matt Kemp has one season worth talking about, he was a slightly above average outfielder in the other years you're talking about, and he was detrimental to his team in 2010 actually chalking up a negative WAR.

He looks fantastic right now, but he's not in the same class as Cabrera career-wise. Cabrera has much, much better career numbers and much higher highs than Kemp. Right now, today, Kemp is better but if you look at any of the past 4 years Cabrera is much better.

I'm a little surprised at the lack of comment over Jim Leyland's ridiculous rant about the media not calling out the umps.

Leyland has been one of those, gotta keep the human element in the game/old school baseball hardheads for years. Now he's asking for the media to bitch about the umps more when they blow a call? What the fuck mate? He had the perfect forum to push for more instant replay after the Armando Galaraga screw up and he did nothing to work towards getting calls right and instead basically said, "it's a shame, but it's part of the game." while the media he is now ranting about screamed at the top of their lungs for expanding replay.

Baseball just refuses to progress and they don't even have a good reason for it.

Trout is the better player right now. His defense is superior to Harper's as is his speed. Harper will probably be the better power hitter of the two, but based on their very short resumes, I'd take Trout. Plus Trout doesn't wear eye black like a fucking douche.
