Michael Johnson dominated his events like Bolt during his peak years and held world records in both, one of which still stands. He just had a different style which I happen to prefer.

1) +1 for Michael Johnson, he was awesome, as was his unique running style.

2) i was surprised to see a chinese sprinter and a japanese sprinter in the 100 m semis. i didn't know such things existed! they were the only non-black sprinters, which is also pretty interesting. i mean, no russian, no german, no white american, etc. chinese took 10.28 s and japanese took 10.11 s. that's pretty good. it was interesting how they were significantly slimmer and way less muscular than all the black dudes. perhaps if they bulked up, they would get quicker?

3) what's up with asafa? why did he quit like 20 m before the end? just because he was going to lose? that shows poor sportsmanship. none of the camera angles i had access to showed his last 20 m or so. he finished in 11.99. but they did show him at the end, crouching on the ground, looking pretty angry and insulted as if he was thinking "ok so i didn't finish next to the 2 jamaicans, but i also got beat by all the non-jamaicans??". of course, if he actually pulled a muscle or something, i retract my comments. any commentary on this?

4) as for bolt, this is what i have to say:

Sorry, but that was silly Bolt.

Had you run the full 100 m properly in the semis (instead of "walking to the final"), you probably could have broken your own world record. You slowed down significantly for the last 20 m. Had you run those last 20 m at full pace, I bet you could have run them 0.3 sec faster and broken your world record.

You thought you would break the world record in the final? Well you didn't.

And you lost your chance in the semis on purpose by deciding to be a strutting peacock instead of a runner in the last 20 m.

NOTE: whether he thought he could break the WR in the final or not doesn't matter. point is, he could have made a 0.3 s difference in his semi, i think. as for conserving energy: he already ran 80 m at full speed (the acceleration part uses the most energy anyway), another 20 m at the same pace [running at constant speed] wouldn't have put a dent in his energy reserves for the final which was what, an hour away? at least 30 min.

Nobody is even getting close to Michael Johnson's 400 meter record which is now 13 years old. We should be able to agree that long undefeated stretches, holding world records in all events you contest, and generally outclassing the field athletically constitute dominance. So again, I'm not sure where you disagree with me, unless the current best always trumps the past no matter what.

If you like the Bolt routine, that's fine. Obviously he's a huge talent. As a fan of the sport more than the athletes themselves, I'd prefer to see him strive for his full potential instead of just clowning around and generally doing the minimum required for him to win. I can't deny he won when it counted on the big stage, but he lost his the Olympic Trials just a few months back. Seems like he doesn't give a crap. You don't live in your peak years forever. I'd like to see him dedicate himself to pursuing some truly untouchable marks. It pisses me off for some reason when he at least appears to not even be trying, because I can't fathom why somebody with his talent can't or won't try hard for what amounts to less than 10 seconds. I feel cheated. WTF, mate?!

Everybody who is in the lead coasts in the semis/quarters/heats/whatever. Go back and watch Michael Johnson's heats and I can almost guarantee you he did the same thing. The risk of pulling a hammy isn't worth if it you know you're going to qualify. Its all about the finals. No one gives a fuck about the heats as long as you make the finals.
