Yes, Howell's power dribble has gotta go. His post defense is pathetic as well. At least he can rebound and he always brings the energy.

Zo lost his confidence and he's forcing things trying to get it back. The sad news is that he doesn't look like a PG anymore. He looked more comfortable slashing to the basket than distributing. Lewis will play an important role on this team.

8-10 FG, 7-11 FT, 23 Points, 15 Rebounds = "a weak game"

Howell is our best help defender, and understands the concept better than anyone else on our team. One-on-one in the post, yeah he's kinda weak. I think thats more because foul trouble is in his head. If he'd just learn not to get stupid fouls reaching in, he could defend much more effectively in the post.

6 TOs and giving up 42 points in the paint to a tiny team are the relevant stats

From the seats it looked like they had 2 bigs that were bigger than everyone on our team.

6 turnovers is a relevant stat...so are 15 rebounds

and he didn't individually give up 42 points

you people would've loved it if we had lost the game

but we didn't

They're probably just upset they didn't see the court tonight.

Which reminds me their sole job on our team should be to clog up the middle and prevent drives in the paint. It's pretty obvious we're getting exposed in this manner because Howell and Leslie are scared to pick up fouls, and rightfully so. Gottfried needs to use those two for some fouls and more aggressive defense.

lol we beat a 1-4 team by 2. We might be worse than I thought. 3rd or 4th in the ACC might be a little too optimistic. We are not good at all right now. Going to have to beat michigan or uconn to even make the tournament.

its all an act to make Michigan think we'll be a pushover... you just wait til we come out and bust their mouths

I mean we've all seen Zo, CJ, Wood, Howell play better than this. So its not like we're trying to be something we havent already been before

teams typically show who they are after 6 games. 6 is large enough to be considered a telling sample size in statistics. Also, they showed us who they were all of last year and the 6 ranking was based solely on repeating their performance georgetown game all season long. Its much more likely that we are the team that beats teams we should beat and loses to good teams and thats what the first 6 are starting to show us. 20% of the season will have been played.

I still don't have a sky is falling mentality.

We just didn't look lethargic last night. Maybe that's what it looked like on tv, and that's not surprising because the camera is going to be ball centric. Sitting in the seats it looked like the entire team was hustling their asses off, especially off the ball. We fought for lose balls like we haven't all season. We rebounded well.

In the first half they didn't attempt a lot of threes...and that was because we were guarding the perimeter well. Yes that did expose the lane. The problem with that is that Howell and Leslie looked reluctant to cover the lane, and I don't fucking blame them with the foul trouble they would be in otherwise. TDT and Vandy need to be put in the game for exactly this purpose.

Second half we protected the lane a little bit more, but that left our perimeter exposed. Gott said in the postgame presser he considered going to the zone in the second half but he was worried it would take away some of the active feet that we had on defense during the first half. Whether or not that was a good coaching decision...I don't know.

There are three big problems on offense at the moment. One of them is lazy passes to the high post, especially from Wood to Howell. Howell gets called for a foul every single time he tries to put some pressure on the opposing big man in the reverse scenario, so I legitimately don't think he expects someone to come over his back and take the ball from him. They do though, and they aren't called for it.

The second is transition turnovers. We have to stop trying to throw the ball over 3 defenders who have hustled back, or make cute little finesse passes in the same scenario. If the defense beats us back, we need to settle for a half court set.

The third has to do with passing in the lane and under the basket. We aren't ready to receive the ball. Sometimes I think that's because the person making the pass should have more of a killer instinct and take the ball up strong, but the other times everyone just needs to be more alert.

I want to reiterate that I really do not think we didn't play with intensity or were lethargic last night. People confuse the ball not going in the basket for playing with no agression. To me it looked liked all the players were terrified to be on the court for the first 10 minutes of the game. They still had visions of OK State in their heads. It's still early in the season and it's understandable to have that happen. Because of this, they legitimately looked like they were trying too hard, and they weren't playing with any flow. We put up some good attempts early on and the ball just didn't fall in the hoop.

We fought really hard last night, and yes it was UNCA, but come on...we did not give up. We played fucking hard the last 10 minutes of the game and we pulled out a W. We really looked like we wanted to win.

I mean Jesus H Christ. We trailed the whole game, and then the seniors stepped it up and knocked down icy shots to seal this one. Good win. Not to mention the fact that TJ Warren has so far been instant offense of off the bench. This was a good result. A team like this just needs to find its swagger, and a game like last night should convince these guys that there is good reason to trust in your team.

Two shit games in a row is the start of a trend. The only thing we did well in that game was rebound, and it was enough to win. That says more about UNC-A than it does about us. They are not a good team. I good team would have beaten us by double digits last night. Our defense doesn't do anything to make teams uncomfortable. They just run their stuff and get open shots. Our half court offense looks poor and we turn the ball over a lot. If we don't score in transition, we're probably not getting a good shot. We will learn a lot about this team on Tuesday.

statistics in general? not even a little bit. a sample size of 6 will get you laughed out of damned near any scientific forum (unless it's tree rings in a climate study that supports AGW).

sorry, fell for the troll

we are not talking about getting 95-100% confidence. If we only have 51% confidence that we are not a great team, it is already more likely that we are not a great team than we are a great team and the sample size is not big enough. Of course, ideally, you want to have as large a sample size as possible but in statistics in general, six trials is the magic number where a two option scenario usually starts to show itself. This is just a rule of thumb and obviously isn't valid for things that are extremely rare. This is why having 2 bad games back to back instead of one goes a long way towards predicting the outcome of our season.

Check this out
http://www.surveysystem.com/sscalc.htm#one
plug in 50 and 30 for a 30 game season and the sample size needed for 95% confidence would be 4 games and 99% would be six games. Of course, our team performing well isn't something as clear as the flip of a coin but it does say a lot about our consistency which is something I don't think will change and also I believe is the mark of a top 15 team.

If we become less picky and say there are maybe 3 levels of how good we are with A being top 10 team. B being a quasi top 25 team that will make the tournament (last year) and C being an NIT or lower team, you would have an interval of 33.333 and the sample size required would need to be 10 games.

I do believe we can compare the early part of the season to the later part of the season because we have played a wide assortment of team types. When we reach 10 games, we would have played every type of team. I'd be fairly confident extrapolating the result of our season from there. If you aren't, look back at the first 6-10 games of any other season and how that season turned out. Of course, its bad logic if you start the season with 10 cupcakes but don't go undefeated.
