that's a really good response that he is not going to read, you should just ignore him. he may reply to it, but rather than reading your post he will quote a single sentence from it and argue about that instead. its pointless.

He'll probably pick the PS. I think Loving actually did spend some time in jail prior to trial, but he never did any prison time.

As of today, both chambers have passed it! In large part because Prime Minister David Cameron of the Conservative Party championed it as a liberty issue.

"The bill will return to the House of Commons, which approved it in May, for parliamentarians to consider any last-minute amendments. They will then send it to Queen Elizabeth II who will sign it into law through royal assent.

The first same-sex weddings are expected to take place in England and Wales sometime in the spring of 2014."

Another result of the Supreme Court decision:

Quote :
"Same-Sex Married Couples To Get Federal Tax Recognition Regardless Of State

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced Thursday that when it comes to taxes, it will recognize same-sex couples' marriages even if they live in a state that does not.

The decision, which was prompted by the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act, marks the latest political progress for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community."

Looks like I'll be filing joint tax returns for the first time in my 10 and a half year relationship.

Probably, I guess it's up to the state on how complicated they want to make the process.

http://www.advocate.com/politics/military/2013/09/04/married-gay-veterans-receive-benefits

Quote :
"Married gay and lesbian veterans will now be eligible for the same benefits afforded to married straight veterans, according to an announcement from Attorney General Eric Holder today.

The federal government will no longer enforce language within Title 38 of the U.S. Code, which forbids the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense from recognizing as legal any marriage other than that of one man and one woman.

Today's announcement is the latest in an ongoing series of statutory and procedural changes arriving as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court's historic ruling on June 26 in Windsor v. U.S., striking down a key segment of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act that prohibited the federal government from recognizing any same-sex marriages, even from states that had embraced marriage equality. With the recent additions of New Jersey, Illinois, and now Hawaii we're up to 16 states I think, 6 of which happened this year alone.

"We changed our logo to the color of love, red, and asked people to join us as we showed our support for equal love together. The rest is history. As many as 10 million people adopted the logo as their own, and Facebook declared it the most successful viral campaign in the history of the social media platform.

In an attempt to quantify the viral energy, Facebook produced a map that showed where Americans were adopting the logo. Every single county in the U.S. had one person or many more changing their profile picture to the pro-equality symbol, which to me speaks volumes about the progress this nation has made on issues of equality in just a few short years."

This logo felt ubiquitous when it went viral earlier this year with the Supreme Court case, but I'm still a little surprised to learn today that there's been enough of a sea change that it was on people's profiles in every single county in the US.

Add another state to the list!

I think the Supreme Court's language in the ruling against DOMA has set a precedent that is being used against anti-gay laws around the country.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/12/19/new-mexico-high-court-rules-same-sex-couples-have-right-to-marry/?hpt=hp_zite1_featured

Quote :
"(CNN) – The New Mexico Supreme Court has ruled the state may not deny same-sex couples the freedom to marry, concluding current laws are unconstitutional.

The ruling Thursday is another victory for gay and lesbian couples nationwide seeking to legally wed. New Mexico would become the 17th state plus the District of Columbia to allow such unions."

A federal judge has struck down Utah's same-sex marriage ban, saying it is unconstitutional.

There's a surprising domino to fall so soon.

^If I remember right, I believe Nate Silver's models suggested something like at least half the states by 2016, most states by 2020, all states by 2024.

Looks like couples are already starting to get married in Utah:

I love that a state like Utah is one of the first to be ushered into the 21st century after the Supreme Court ruling. Sadly, I envisioned things falling into place much like one would think with the conservative holdouts being the last to get the message.

Didn't really see another good thread to put this in:

Federal appeals court ruled VA's ban of same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, which is a good thing. Roy Cooper however, has stated that he won't uphold the same ban in NC's constitution, citing the fed's decision in VA, which should get him removed from his position.

Quote :
"
Following a federal appeals court ruling Monday that Virginia's same-sex marriage ban is unconstitutional, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper said his office would no longer oppose challenges to the state's constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriage.
"

Quote :
"

Cooper has spoken out previously against North Carolina's amendment, but he said the decision Monday not to continue fighting to uphold it was based solely on the legal merits of the case and was separate from his personal opinion.
"
(which is bullshit - he saw a chance and is taking it, based on his personal beliefs)

http://www.wral.com/nc-to-stop-defending-marriage-amendment/13846324/

I don't care what kind of law it is, if your job is to uphold the law, then that is what you do.

^^ should Roy Cooper also be fighting to bring back the Christian requirement for holding office or other things that have been preempted? No, that's dumb. Mississippi didn't ratify the 13th amendment till 1995, were you calling for the AG of Mississippi to fight to keep slavery in his state before then?

It's common for AGs to either continue or end legal fights based on their professional judgement of the situation. Nothing worthy of being removed from their position. Why continue to waste taxpayer money and a legal fight that has essentially been determined?

I seriously doubt the Mississippi state legislature was not ratifying the 13th amendment due to their personal beliefs that slavery should still be an institution in their state, which is what Mr. Cooper is doing here with gay marriage.

I know I have to clarify, so I'll do it again, I'm not for the ban. I just don't think Roy Cooper is being a good AG.

but you literally just claimed that personal opinions shouldn't matter, that it's their duty to keep fighting. so Roy Cooper should be fighting to keep the requirement that only Christians hold office in NC, and the AG in Mississippi should have been fighting for slavery in their state, regardless of any personal opinions.

or, if you are now saying that personal opinions are relevant, then why are they relevant in those situations but not in regards to Amendment 1?

tl;dr your position is inconsistent

Some would argue that he has a responsibility to the State of NC to fight legal battles he thinks he can win, and not waste taxpayer dollars on legal battles he knows he can't win. The ruling yesterday by the Federal Appeals Court for our district invalidates any fight he could have fought for now. We already know what the court will say if we take our case to them, because they just ruled in the same fight versus Virginia.

If anything, this is him being highly responsible.
