There's some truth to the concept that trump voters are lashing back at recent gains gays, transgender, women and blacks are making in terms of securing civil rights so they can access the same privileges white males have had for a century or more, but the whole point of our layers of representative government is to prevent these ignorant mobs from steering the entire country wrong (solving the issue of mob rule is a thousands year old problem that Plato and the founding fathers both wrote about). Somehow trump burned through these firewalls and there will be a lot of analysis to figure out how.

In the meanwhile, its a real problem trying to communicate empirical thinking and analysis to people like JCE and other ignoramuses that make up the lower half of the bell curve but can also vote. Studies have shown using facts tends to galvanize people into their wrong beliefs, armchair quarterbacking (aka Dunning Kruger effect) seems to cause people to reject expert opinion on economy and foreign policy etc, the only reliable way ignorant people in particular change their opinions is peer pressure from close family and friends.

My dad is voting for Trump. He's not brilliant by any means, but he has above average intelligence. Back when the primaries began, Trump seemed to about 3rd or 4th on his list (I know he liked Kasich and Rubio...as did I out of the conservative choices). Now that's its pretty much just Trump and Hillary, he's all in on the Trumpster. He's been totally brainwashed by Fox News...it's sad.

A buddy I share office space with is in the same situation with his dad.

So from those two examples, I'm concluding that a ton of older conservatives will be voting for Trump. And the younger rednecks from my home town that post on facebook.

he does everything in his own interest - this is simply giving him a huge amount of publicity that can really only be good for his brand

I used to think this was the case, but I know some really smart folks who truly believe that Trump is the way to go. I'm talking about attorneys, bankers/financial people, etc.

But I think the biggest threat will be the revolt from black folks and the youth who will freak the fuck out if he's elected.

I'm voting Gary Johnson for now, but if it's down to the wire and it looks like it's too close, I can't count out that I would get so fucking high and go vote for Hillary.

@justinh524 I hear ya, but at the end of the day, it's all about what's in it for me. That's not limited to either party.

What really surprises me with my Trump friends is not their racism; but the lack of empathy. Most of these folks are christian and go to church on a regular basis. This is what really surprises me. How can you call yourself a christian if you support Trump? He trumps Hillary in the scumbag checklist: cheats on wife, attacks people, etc.

It also has to do with the fear of losing power. Us white men have had it pretty good the past decades, century, entire civilization.

Don't just assume that every Trump supporter is racist. Many of them look the other way when Trump opens his mouth.

Now old white men voting for Trump- that's another story. Most, if not all, are racist. But they can justify it when they deal with "good black folk" on a personal level. It's the thugs with their baggy pants that scare the shit out of them.
