Racial bullying has been a thing for a while but I’m sure it feels different when the president and the vice president and the wealthiest man in the world all are openly racist too

Do you actually care or are you just rage baiting? It can be used as a restraint tool. If handcuffs are on it's a crime but when it happens they are not held accountable. And that is bad!

CBP’s Use of Force Policy Handbook (HB 4500-002A) states explicitly: “OC Spray may be utilized as a compliance tool on a subject offering, at a minimum, active resistance.” Both agencies’ policies prohibit pepper spray against individuals who are merely verbally non-compliant or passively refusing orders."

I’m a republican who fully believes in a well-controlled border and who thinks we need to get the illegal immigration population under control.

And I fully support those here who think that what is going on currently is reprehensible.

My solution? Naturalize anyone currently here without criminal records that want to stay here. For those that don’t want to be US citizens, assist them in getting back to their country of origin. Give them an opportunity to have skin in the game.

Then make sure the border is as secure as it can possibly be.

^The country has been trying to get to what you describe since 2009. It’s basically the DREAM act (which has taken several forms) and which was always paired with greater border security funding. Various versions have been negotiated in congress since then and it’s always been sabotaged (by guess who?).

The GOP isn’t interested in governing via clearly defined legislation and laws. It’s why their current Congress is the least productive in history. They want Authoritarians that can bind the opposition with laws that they make up as they go, while choosing to ignore the in-groups blatant crimes.

^^ that's true if you ignore the entire Biden administration. Unchecked open borders and moving huge swaths of them to non border states. The Catholic Church got almost $500 million to care for immigrants that showed up. USAspending.gov is littered with payments to companies for $50 million a pop to just house immigrants. Even in NC.

A lot of immigrants tried to get in this country post COVID. Many with legitimate asylum or refugee claims, atleast in the eyes of existing immigration law.

-Day 1 Dems offered up the US Citizenship act. Biden was begging for new laws from Congress. Begging for cash to help countries that were in crisies.
-Biden extended some humanitarian programs that I think he felt had geopolitical implications (Venezuela, Cuba, etc).
-Biden extended Trump’s Title 42 policy until it got legally complicated. Ultimately SCOTUS had to make a ruling to stay the lower court rulings.
-our system ultimately arrived at the 23’-24’ Bipartisan Immigration Act. Biden was offering to shutdown the border entirely for a year. He just wanted immigration laws that weren’t crafted 30+ years ago. The bill got killed after Trump’s request. Why? Because the terror tactics are what the Trump Admin wants. They’d be looking to round up someone, as cruelly as possible, even if Biden had the tightest immigration policies ever. The Trump admin thinks this is good politics.

Every time you pull back the curtain to really examine the sausage assembly, it’s the GOP that has refused to negotiate and just hurled rhetorical grenades in the legislative process. They did it all so they could have what we are witnessing now.

This was new in 2023, and arguably not the eyes of existing asylum claims:
https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/R47504

Quote :
"Created a "rebuttable presumption of ineligibility" for asylum for applicants arriving at the Southwest border without valid documents who transited through another country without seeking asylum there or using lawful pathways like CBP One appointments. "

IE, they allowed people with no papers to say, yeah I'm an asylum seeker and gave them a year to figure it out while residing here and having a court date. Famously NY spent billions of dollars housing them. The Catholic Church also got a around $480 million to help house them.

They did change that rule under Biden after it turned it into the shit show that resettled 4 million people conservatively.

I’m going to need you to be more clear because that is not what the paragraph you are quoting is saying. Biden implemented a program that assumed you were ineligible for asylum if you attempted to bypass the legal processes. It’s listed as an example of Biden’s ever tightening restrictions on asylum. They don’t just drop the rule because it didn’t work, they took the basis of tha same rule and further restricted theclaims. That’s the very next paragraph. It says the Biden admin just flatly started denying people from certain countries. The very next paragraph says Trump has kept these rules in place but has further restricted it.

^ Biden did that in 2024, but the initial way it was handled led to more people showing up between 2022 and 2024 before he enacted that policy.

The result was a net increase of 3.5 million (from official sources). Maybe his changes would have helped in 2024 but that was from pressure outside his admin.

Tangentially related to ICE I guess...whats the deal with Don Lemon. My neighbor Phill brought it up yesterday, didn't know anything about it. Just read an article, but don't see how what he did was illegal? I get there is a law where protestors arrested for blocking ppl that want to have an abortion and there is also some part of same law against protesting at a church...which seems weird to have that aspect connected to the same law, but whatever.

So Lemon interviewed someone at a church and now trump admin wants him arrested.

I get that he is a left leaning partisan, but how is interviewing someone at a church illegal?

^^^^ A majority of that increase were the humanitarian and extended parole programs I mentioned in the earlier post. Biden was tightening it by 2023. Equal and opposite reaction. When you detain children in cages, ignore deteriorating humanitarian situations in your backyard, and enforce bigoted travel bans you'll have voters supporting a more humane approach.

It’s almost like to stop the pendulum from swinging you need to sit down, find middle ground, and craft clear and precise laws that address the current on-the-ground situation. Again, that is not what the GOP wants. They want masked Feds in the street. They know that if they can’t push the pendulum in to full throated authoritarianism this cycle, the next swing will probably get the country there.

"The vibe is incredibly chaotic, but also strangely casual. Good's wife is in this video, too, heckling the officers. "You want to come at us? I say go get yourself some lunch, big boy," she says, ballsy and confident and absolutely certain that nothing bad could possibly come of this.
Neither of these women seem cognizant in the slightest that the armed men around them don't think this is fun at all—a naivete that is characteristic of many of the people, usually women, who have become the unofficial faces of this movement to hold law enforcement accountable. Around the same time that Renee Good was shot, a video circulated on TikTok of another confrontation between a group of agents who appear to be U.S. Marshals and an activist with a camera.
The activist is a young- to middle-aged woman, as is one of the agents— and when the first woman mentions that her 6-year-old child is in her car, the agent looks like she's been electrocuted. "You have a child in your car?" she says, her voice pitching sharply upward, her eyes wide with horror. "Get your child off the scene! This is an active police scene!" It could not be clearer, in this moment, that these women inhabit two different realities. One understands herself to be in a dangerous, high-stakes situation; the other thinks it's all a sort of game."

I think that’s largely an accurate description, but it’s describing the problem. We don’t need amped up poorly trained idiots hyped on nationalist slop to be charging around with weapons in our neighborhoods cosplaying as military, just to abduct mostly innocent people who didn’t fill out some paperwork — that’s the thing Americans are against

They’ve pulled some of these people off of actual crime work to waste resources and our tax dollars on this performative violence

The mega point I've been making is that some of them are not cosplaying. The guy that shot Good for example:

Quote :
"Ross said he deployed to Iraq from 2004 to 2005 with the Indiana National Guard. Ross said he served as a machine gunner on a gun truck as part of a combat patrol team.

He said he returned from Iraq in 2005, went to college and joined the Border Patrol in 2007 near El Paso, Texas. He worked there until 2015, serving as a field intelligence agent gathering and analyzing information on cartels and drug and human smuggling.

Ross said he has served as a deportation officer based in Minnesota since he joined ICE in 2015. He is assigned to fugitive operations, seeking to arrest “higher value targets” in the ICE region that includes Minneapolis, he testified last month. He said that he was also a team leader with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. "

Even if there are ICE agents "cosplaying" they still have live ammunition, and some them ARE NOT cosplaying. It would be more accurate to say Renee Good was cosplaying.

If she martyred her life and understood the risk to stop fascism, then great (though doing that with a six year old is fucking insane). It does not seem like it from her body language and attitude, and that of her partner/wife, that she understood the risk she was taking.

I guess that’s the rubric of where you fall on this issue. If good was more humble and compliant, she would still be alive today. If the ice agent followed procedure or was better trained, Good would still be alive today

Is the onus in a democracy on people to bend to an aggressive and likely illegal government, or on the government to be subservient to its people?

I think if she was willingly and knowingly taking a risk she showed balls and courage. By and large you are not seeing that on the right and you certainly didn't in the covid era.

If she did know the risk and the optics of it are what they are then trump's current policies are fucked.
