What Goose Island beers should I be on the lookout for? They just started releasing in NC.

depends on what they're sending.

their normal lineup is just ok.

their barrel aged series are good to excellent.

Matilda & Sofie are excellent for the money.

Out of their normal stuff, I'd say go IPA. (& Christmas Ale if you get it)

Not confirmed yet, but I *think* Denver might get it's first batch of BCBS today or tomorrow. It's really hush hush and I haven't seen or heard a peep from anyone, only two stores have both said this week will be nothing short of epic.

Picked up 2x Abyss already this week.

Small trade + 1 of the Abyss I picked up yesterday.

the Goose Island entrance into the NC market is causing such an uproar among the devoted craft collective here. and now there are reports that the original Goose Island CEO is stepping down and AB execs are taking over the top spots in the company.

Quote :
"I understand the panicked, ongoing rush to defend Goose Island, which in fact is dead. Yesterday, it became even more dead, if that's possible: Goose Island CEO, John Hall, stepping down, A-B InBev exec taking over. Hall now "will be part of a newly-formed 'craft advisory board' at A-B InBev," meaning that he'll be the rough equivalent of an affirmative action appointment to an entity which is the GREATEST ENEMY OF CRAFT BEER IN THE HISTORY OF THIS PLANET."

http://potablecurmudgeon.blogspot.com/2012/11/goose-island-zombie-craft-beer-and.html

I can understand the uproar. AB has pumped a lot (relative to craft beer marketing) dollars into the area promoting the brand, hosting launch parties nightly for the past two weeks in bars around and, from reports, bullying their way onto tap walls. For the most part the bars seem OK with it and people have been attending these launches. I'm just skeptical we'll ever see the good stuff and this market will just be Goose Island light and even more so with the original management out

don't forget the brewmaster for the barrel program left in the last week or two too.

his new ventures seemed neat.

"A-B InBev exec taking over"

yea, read that and I think this is the biggest part that worries me. 100% of the time ABInbev takes over they look to cut costs, this will MOST LIKELY mean changes in recipes.

until they change a recipe, i'll continue to drink their beer. if they start looking to cut costs and increase margins, that will be the true downfall of Goose Island.... it's obvious they're at a tipping point now with all signs pointing to its doom...

if ABInbev would focus on the craft and less on profits, it could be a good thing, hypothetically of course.

Just bought my 2nd 12 pack of Cold Mountain this week. Probably gonna hold on to this one to sip on in the new year. In the meantime the last few times I've been to the FS it is all I've had to drink

I'm glad that Dragon's Milk has been back on tap...but I'm not too excited that it's now $7/glass

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a couple bottle of The Abyss? My father in law worked in Oregon in the early part of the year and always talked about Deschutes, would love to surprise him with a bottle for Christmas

Tried to pick up a growler of Gingerbread Stout at the Hardywood Brewery last night but they were out (more coming next week though). Had to settle for the Mo Rye'd Rye Pale Ale, which is pretty damn good itself.

Stone Mint Chocolate Imperial Stout - this was a tough one to finish. strong mint up front, but a harsh unpleasant finish. glad it was only a 12oz split two ways.

Terrapin Liquid Bliss - was told this was a "liquid Reese's Cup". I didn't pick up flavors that strong. I'm not a big peanut butter fan, but the flavors in this beer were very balanced. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's almost a tease, with the flavors up front leaving before you can just get enough. A little pricey as all Terrapin beers are these days.

Split it with a friend as well, just last Sunday and thought it was delicious! Mint was subtle and the stout really had a nice full body, not too bitter, thought it was just really well balanced, odd to hear it wasn't for you.

Was just up in VT last week - definitely recommended. The brewery visit itself isn't much, just an in and out retail deal with a quick tasting, but the setting is awesome and would be a great place to camp. Stayed at some cool places and did some nice hikes as well. Already keeping an eye on either an anniversary or harvest fest at HF.

I'm getting ready to hit up a couple craft beer stores this weekend to get a few bottles for my father-in-law. I need some recommendations for some new, good brews, any suggestions? He isnt really into IPAs, more into ambers, stouts and porters, the more complex the better

I've already got Terrapin Liquid Bliss, Dogfish Miles Davis Bitches Brew and Pisgah Valdez on the list (thanks jeepin4x4)

heh. I asked for this Terrapin dog collar with a built in beer bottle opener:
http://terrapinbeer.com/store/#!/~/product/category=1034894&id=4384060

I bought the Boulevard smokestack gift set for myself. Haven't had any of their beers and the tulip looked cool.

Mother Earth's Silent Night is a pretty solid seasonal release. Bought it for a friend last year and it was well received. Not sure when it comes out.

Too much... about $260. I'm hosting a farewell party on Friday for two friends who are moving to NYC, so I figure I'll bring out a few of those bottles for people there who will appreciate them. The rest should get me through the holidays and beyond.

Guy at the store told me they were getting Deschutes Abyss in tomorrow, otherwise I would have added a few bottles of that to the haul. Now, I'm not so sure my wife will let me go back to get them.

[Edited on December 5, 2012 at 9:56 PM. Reason : Abyss]
