^^i'm only keeping one of the cards, the 260 is single gpu, the 9800GX2 is dual gpu, so why does the 260 out fold the 9800GX2 when clearly the 9800GX2 is the faster card?

9800GX2 is faster than 8800GT in SLI and faster than 4870 in CF and faster than the 4870X2 in Crysis http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3354&p=5 (depends on resolution of course)

I may start folding G80 GTS and 6750@3.2, which will be hilarious because that will probably pop out more PPD than my brother NeoEraser used to average when he had them folding on shittons of old machines.
edit: does folding run the GPU and CPU at 100% load 24/7?

^yea, he used to average 10k-20k depending on the day, and i remember when that was a TON of points....(pre-SMP days) now they are just handing out points with the SMP/GPU clients.
and yes, folding@home client (smp does cpu at 100%) and (gpu does gpu at 100%) but it's only idle time so it doesn't actually impact any thing of higher priority, meaning you shouldn't notice it.... if you do you can always change the configuration to run at a lower % if you wish.

I don't think you can run the GPU client on two video cards that are in SLI mode. Which explains why the 9800GX2 doesn't perform as well as it should, because you cannot unlink the two so only one core folds (that's the explanation given by one of the guys over at anandtech, anyway). How much difference do you see between the GTX 260 and the 9800GX2 in games? If not large, keep the GTX as it should run cooler/quieter and crank out more ppd for the team.
Prospero, go ahead and hook me up as an auther on the ncsufolding website and I'll stop by there to post sometimes too. And give me the clock speed on the 260 along with the ppd when you have it, I'm trying to keep my numbers fairly pure over at AT forums so people know what to expect from stock versus OC hardware. 8/1/2008 8:46:06 AM |

Hey how do you know your 1 machine is costing $50 per month? It is getting hotter out you know I don't see how it could be anywhere near that much. I'm have a Q6600 box with an 8800GT, running two SMP clients and 1 GPU client and it's pulling under 200 watts, which is about $10 a month last time I checked.

Yeah, this machine is a new one with a 700W OCZ power supply.
I dont know all the details right now, but I am looking to conserve the best I can. Just bought a new S2000 and need all the penny's I can scrounge, the computer running when I am not there isnt doing me any favors. so its the first to go for now, when I get home the PS3, running folding will be shutdown.

For reference:
E8400 / 8800GTS (320MB) / 2x 7200rpm HDD's / 1x 10000rpm HDD / 2 DIMM's / DVDRW = 215W on 100% load
I use a Zalman ZM-MFC2 to monitor wattage directly from the PSU.
The reason why everyone's scared about # of watts in their PSU, is because up until recently all PSU's were like 60-70% efficient.... now with a majority over 80% efficient (some even higher) it means you can run more on less.

EVGA 8800GS (OC to 650/900 for 4320 ppd): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130332

EDIT: Just as a note, I have two of these cards already & they're virtually silent but quite powerful so great for medium gaming and F@H use. Low power draw makes them good as well. Check out this full review: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/GeForce_8800_GS

Since the SMP client expired on Aug. 2nd, we've had about a 20-25,000 point drop in our "points per day" as a team.

Looks like the GPU2 client expired too. Here's the download link for that: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther
If anyone runs into any problems installing the new (6.22) SMP client, let us know.
This is what I did.
1) Downloaded the Deino MPI one from here: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther (they say it's more stable or something)
2) Followed the instructions they had here: http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1783 (don't use any passphrases)
3) Used the executable/instructions found here http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=4609
I don't know if the 3rd step is required, but since they said that newer executable works better I used that one. Works fine as a service, just make sure to use those two flags (-smp and -denio if you use the deino version). I'll try to install two of them on my Q6600 in the next couple days. I don't expect any issues.] 8/7/2008 2:18:33 PM |

Well you need a console version to run it as a service, which is available on the download page:http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther
And it sounds like people have been successful in running it as a service (the download page says running as a service doesn't work in Vista...I assume that's accurate but who knows)
Here's some discussion about it: http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?s=0b9f5f5c0d06881660333bdef41e9bce&showtopic=36854&pid=343741&st=0entry343741

Yeah, it's a little disheartening. I mean, I started folding under 'denithor' this weekend to see how many ppd my new 8800GTS 512MB would crank out (averages >5,000 ppd when F@H servers are up). And within like three days I've already passed my mom's total accumulated over about the last three years running the basic client on a Celeron 1.7Ghz box.

Quote : | "Sure, it's all well and good to play around with the Folding@Home client on toys like the PS3, but if you're really serious about out-nerding the rest of the pack, you need big-boy hardware, like this 51-card NVIDIA-based rig built by nitteo of the overclock.net forums. That's 51 8800-series GPUs on 13 MSI P6N Diamond mobos, enough for an estimated 265,200 folding points per day when they all go online -- and we're guessing that number will go up when that new CUDA-based folding client released yesterday is installed. Now let's just hope all those cards can stand the heat, hmm? More pics at the read link." |

So running 2 smp clients on a dual core would work? I guess i'll install fahmon and see what's most efficient. I still can't get the GPU client to work. Installed the CUDA driver but it still says wrong driver. Might have something to do with me remoting to my desktop. I'll try it again when i'm actually there.
-grr must have done something wrong. SMP is running and the cores are being used but it's still at 0%, and PPD is "0.00*" on FAHMON. Do i have to wait a while for it to update the PPD?
^k, one for now.
