especially since you wouldn't beable to see much but sky with that thing due to the curve of the earth. atleast thats what i'd think about it as...

the focusing distance on that thing has to be like 100 yards atleast

at the RBC right now in the media room. So damn close to the wall and I'm liking the nice little port holes for the lens. Although, these guys are very close. Shooting with the 24-70 and 70-200 and that's practically all I need. Most of my shots are worthless right now, but I did get a cool fight sequence.

I do have to say, I think out of every sport I've shot and tried at, this one was hard as balls. I only took about 150 pictures the whole time and I'm pretty sure only like 5 came out good. Shooting through the ports is harder than it looks.

Okay! I actually didn't do so bad as I had originally thought. Although, I'm not totally excited about how these pics turned out, but what can I say, its my first day shooting hockey. Better luck next week.

^^It was difficult because I wasn't expecting the ports to be waist level and shooting through the port is pretty restrictive. Mind you, I've been pampered with shooting motor sports which had a wide field to move around from, plus panning only required moving from the camera body axis, not the end of the lens axis. Not to mention the port hole was about the same size as the front element on the 300. I think I took only 26 pictures from the 300 on the 5D.

^ Nice pics jbaz. Sports are tough, especially when your movement is limited. My only suggestion would be to anticipate the action. A lot of your shots seem just a hair late of when youd want them. Like you see excitement and shoot. Try to get a feel for where theyre going and whats going to happen, then shoot accordingly. Ive had friends shoot my rugby games and those who pay close attention to whats going on in the games always come out with the better shots. But, Im a total rookie compared to you and have no real clue of what it was like, so feel free to throw that out the window.

yeah, the plays are crazy fast since the puck fly's around so fast. By the time I pressed the shutter release, the play is over. And I thought football plays were fast. I knew a lot of my shots were going to be crap anyhow. At least I made some new pro photog friends (and the security guards too).

I might try some shots from a higher vantage point so I can actually track players with a long lens.

Senez - Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is probably your best choice for a sub $1k 300mm lens.

The 300 f/4 L IS lens is pretty good one and about 1k or so. I've heard good things about the 70-300 DO IS lens.

my wife and i are going to europe this winter for 10 days and are going to potentially be buying a DSLR for the trip

we have a rough budget for a camera but can be adjusted as need be - would like to keep it under a $1000 for everything (camera / "must have" lenses / bag / etc) and would like to get the biggest bang for buck and can wait up until early december to order/buy

recommendations?

^Hmm, just off the top of my head, I'd say pick up a slightly used Canon 20D on ebay for about $400 with an 18-55mm lens. Then get yourself a new Canon 55-250mm IS telephoto lens and you've probably spent about $700. Get a bag, extra battery, and memory cards and you're all set, AND under budget.

If you want to buy anything more than the basic DSLR camera kit, sony seems way overpriced. If you think the kit DSLR is all you'll ever need, get it. If you think you'll grow into your photography hobby, get a Nikon or Canon. A note about "built in images stabilization"....It gets much less effective at longer focal lengths, which is where you really need it the most. Optical Image stabilization is much better.

I'm about to post my Canon EF 50 f/1.4 lens for sale. $300.

I used it maybe half a dozen times and I do love the bokeh from it and the low light capabilities, but I honestly have no use for it since my 24-70 works just fine for me and my shooting style. Not only that, but school has quite a few 50 1.4's I can check out with no use and my wedding partner has one as well. I do have to say it's incredibly sharp, which makes it hard for me to sell it, but I'd rather have the 85 prime lens for portrait work later on.

Add a flash too, makes indoor shooting worlds easier (bounce the flash though). Suggest 2ndhand 430EX, $180-210. Or a Sigma flash (530 DG Super iin particular), it's loaded with features.

Good suggestion on the 430ex, but I'd be cautious about buying an off brand flash. I've not used the Sigma flahses, but I used to have a Sunpak flash and it was absolute crap. I got better results using the flash in manual mode than I did letting the flash determine its power output. If you get a canon flash and canon camera, they'll talk to each other just fine to set your exposure properly.
