Deems May and a few former famous 'Holes get together and do this roundtable on IC. Here's some stuff he had to say:

Quote :
"This whole summer has opened my eyes so wide in terms of the anti-Carolina establishment. I really didn’t comprehend how bad it was until the last few weeks, but it surely is us against the rest of the world. I have been amazed at the number of people who have come out of the woodwork, who I thought were genuinely agnostic towards Carolina who are absolutely giddy about this and can’t hide it. They have taken every opportunity to hammer us, without all of the facts really being out. We certainly deserve criticism based on the facts that have been presented, but not on speculation.

I have also been extremely disappointed in the reaction of some of our own fans. This holier-than-thou attitude and “This stuff doesn’t happen at Carolina” has to stop. We all know we went (or are attending) the best university in America, but by no means does that preclude us from having kids who make mistakes and certainly doesn’t make us better than anyone else that didn’t attend Carolina. "

I think he answered why the "anti-carolina establishment" exists. And MOST of your own fans are the "holier-than-thou" types. So maybe, in an indirect way, he's just saying he didn't realize he went to such a douche-infested school

well, he kind of gets it

they are "the best university in America" literally nowhere besides inside their own minds

but the fact that they "all" (my guess is about 3% of the fan base) went to carolina "certainly doesn’t make us better than anyone else that didn’t attend Carolina" is kind of refreshing to see

From sdwright:

"Flashback to November, 2008: After Saturday’s 41-10 loss to NC State, Deems May had this to say on Taylor Zarzour’s WPTF post-game call-in show:

‘They won’t even be in our league soon. [...] With the way our recruiting is going we’ll be challenging teams like Viriginia Tech for the ACC Title. [...] State College will be lucky to get a win against us every four or five years…’

i decided to go back and found some more gems both from Paschal and May:

Quote :
"Mark: While I was playing, I faced two different head coaches there. Chuck Amato wanted their rival to be Florida State, and they always played well against them. Maybe it was because the majority of the players they had back then were from Florida. With Tom O’Brien, the things he has said about the N.C. State and Carolina game leads me to believe that he wants Carolina to be their rival. This game, to the guys who are not from North Carolina and didn't grow up a UNC or State fan, probably means about as much as the Boston College game last week did, and like it or not, that's the way it is. But for me, I loved playing against State.

Growing up a Carolina guy, I was raised to understand that N.C. State has great distaste for us. I never understood why they hate Carolina so much. Maybe it’s an inferiority complex? I don't know. What I do know is that I have met some great State people in my time in the area, but the majority leave something to be desired. Being a spectator at a N.C. State-UNC game does not do State fans justice. Playing in this game opened my eyes to a whole new world of N.C. State fans. Let’s just say I never understood how much value and emphasis their fans put into playing Carolina until I suited up my freshman year at State. For their fans, this is their Super Bowl.

Playing in Raleigh is different than playing anywhere else in the ACC. First off, their stadium is not even near the campus. You drive up to the Fairgrounds and there is a football stadium with a bunch of people wearing red, flipping you the bird. The majority of the women and children are also taking part of their pre-game finger festivity. There are a lot of trucks - I remember my freshman year thinking that I had never seen so many trucks in my life. Then we played ECU and that set the record for most trucks at a pregame tailgate, but that is a different story for a different day. what a douche

Then you get off the bus and walk into the worst visiting locker room I have ever been in, until the renovations, and it still isn't great. You get dressed to go play, and I remember walking onto that field laughing my freshman year to some of the things that were said to us. They ranged from moronic to pretty creative, but it was a memory I will always have. When you stand on the sidelines, you have to wear your helmet because of flying nickels, mini-bottles and batteries. The best part is seeing that Carolina blue corner and running over to the band when you beat them at home. I appreciate and understand the crosstown rivalry and enjoy it in good fun. To the State fans reading this, please, don't change a thing - it is far too entertaining and it makes the game that much more fun.

I want to send my best wishes, prayers and thoughts to offensive coordinator Dana Bible. I think I speak for the Carolina family in wishing you well and a quick recovery."

Quote :
"Deems: They beat us all four times I played, so I seem to just remember it meaning that I was 0-4 against them. The UNC juniors are 0-2 and, believe me, it's no fun living in North Carolina never having beaten State College. Here's hoping UNC’s talented juniors haven't forgotten that beating last year and will step up and be the leaders Saturday. As for Carter-Finley, I can't remember a whole lot except smelling corn dogs and cotton candy because the fair was always going on. I also remember looking up at their press box sitting on the upper deck and thinking, “How does that thing stay balanced on there?"

Boy, times have changed. They have an awesome stadium. Club level, suites, enclosed endzone, not just the grass bank. An incredible football complex that is state of the art. You really have to hand it to them on the new Carter-Finley Stadium, it is a nice place and a huge asset to their recruiting. Let's just hope UNC can return the whipping that they gave us last year. Until we beat them, we can't talk trash.

to be fair, this part is pretty cool
A note to all fans: please keep coach Dana Bible in your thoughts and prayers. He recruited me at State when I was in high school and is a first class guy. I was fortunate enough to be heavily recruited and Coach Bible is one of the few coaches who recruited me that I can still remember their name and who they coached for. That says a lot to the type of person he is and how he recruited me. I know as fans we pick on State and they pick on us, but this Saturday is just a game and Coach Bible is fighting the real battle. "

guess i'll post this here from chit chat:
Quote :
"This was sent to me today. Interesting read. None of this has been fact checked.

Subject: UNC

Chandler's youth minister has been updating me about UNC about the NCAA investigation on facebook. Thought I would share it with you.

1. Southern Cal is already preparing a lawsuit against the NCAA if the NCAA is lenient with Carolina, especially since the sanctions against USC were for offenses committed by a coach and players who aren't even at USC anymore, while the offending coach and players are still at Carolina.

2. The head of the NCAA investigation was the AD at Miami when Butch just ditched the 'Canes and left for the NFL. Think he has it out for Butch?

3. More than half of Butch's recruits were labeled as "academically questionable" by even Carolina's own compliance board. You get that label if you meet any of the following criteria: below 900 combined on the Reading and Math portions of the SAT; score below 400 on any section of the SAT, score below 19 composite on the ACT, or have a class rank below the 50th percentile. More than HALF of Butch Davis' recruits. And somehow these guys not only made it through admissions, but qualified under ACC rules.

4. Several players were admitted as "Partial Qualifiers," and should have been on academic probation according to Carolina rules, which is all fine and well, but there's one problem with that: the ACC BANNED Partial Qualifiers 5 years ago before Butch even set foot in Chapel Hill.

5. This is not just about coaches accepting benefits, agents going after players, and players who should be ineligible. There is word that the NCAA is investigating some of the Rams Club's biggest donors to verify where the checks they wrote actually went.

6. This investigation is not about the NCAA collecting evidence. They already HAVE plenty - it's about giving Carolina a chance to come clean, and so far, they're failing miserably. Coach Blake's resignation means nothing to the NCAA. If anything, it make him/them look worse because (a) his resignation means he cannot be compelled to interview as an employee of the state under oath, so (b) it can be seen as an admission of guilt. Oh, and (c) they were going to nail him anyway.

7. Old-schoolers in the Rams Club and Board of Trustees never approved of Butch's hiring anyway. This could be the end of AD Dick Baddour too.

8. Bottom line, the phrase being used the most right now is "Lack of institutional control". Thus would be a total embarrassment for Carolina and will set the football program back about 10 years. Possible sanctions right now: postseason and bowl ban, loss of scholarships, loss of TV games, forced firings, vacating previous seasons. And that's all before any possible legal action taken by parents of players and donors whose money was funneled into "benefits". Oh, and any other action the state of North Carolina may take as well, since all school employees are state employees.

Several schools have been approached by the NCAA to request information about the following:
*Clemson: Brandon Ellerbe flipped to UNC because his mom moved to Chapel Hill. Where did she get the money to move?
*Tennessee: Corey Miller claims Carolina assistant John Blake (AKA Black Santa) tried to bribe him to come to UNC, and Brandon Willis did flip to UNC. That was posted by Corey to the UT Facebook wall.
*USCar: Because their TE Weslye Saunders got dragged into the investigation. He's practicing, but don't know if he'll be allowed to play. Spurrier has defended Saunders in the media, and is rumored to be very upset at Carolina's coaches for how Saunders got implicated.
*Bama: Because their DE Marcel Dareus has been suspended pending a review for reinstatement by the NCAA as a result of the investigation into Carolina. Dareus was supposed to be a key player for Saban as he prepared Bama's D for defending the national title. Think he's got reason to be mad at Butch/Carolina?
*Duke: Cutcliffe is pissed at UNC for a variety of reasons to do with in-state recruiting, as Cutcliffe has told the media more than once that he wants to give local players more of a presence in the Duke program.
*UGA: Because A. J. Green is being investigated by the NCAA

...and other interesting factoids...

*UNC back-up QB Bryn Renner's dad became head coach at East Chapel Hill High this summer...he was given the "lead" on the opening by Butch Davis. Guess whose son is the ECHHS starting QB? Last name Davis.

*The father of a recent UNC commit from Virginia accepted a job two days before his son gave his verbal commitment to UNC. His father moved from South Carolina to......Chapel Hill.

And now it also turns out that anybody who was denied admission to Carolina in the years the offending players were admitted may be allowed to subpoena the school for the admission records for those players, and sue Carolina.

"Athletics and academics are in tension by the nature of their time demands, but athletics and academics cannot be allowed to be in conflict in a great university. The evidence is clear that the academic processes and standards...have been misused in a number of instances to benefit some individual...players."

Not words spoken recently, but words spoken by the Chancellor of the North Carolina university system in 1989 when academic violations were uncovered at NC State under Jim Valvano.

Valvano's resignation was requested from the basketball head coach and AD positions.

At no point did any of the improprieties include the following:

1. Tutors assisting student-athletes improperly 2. Tutors performing
academic tasks for student-athletes 3. Agent-player contact, including
gifts and cash 4. Questionable admissions 5. Coaching staff having
knowledge of improprieties

Well, so far with the Carolina case, we have...

1. Tutors with alleged sexual/romantic relationships with players.
2. Tutors turning in papers for student-athletes.
3. Agent-player contact, with evidence from player tweets.
4. Already gone over the questionable admissions.
5. John Blake was a member of the coaching staff, and more and more evidence is coming to light about how much contact he had with agents.

NC State didn't wait for the NCAA. NC State put in place sanctions upon itself back in 1989/90 - ban from postseason play (ACC and NCAA tournaments), loss of scholarships, loss of tv revenue, loss of sponsors, etc. Those sanctions tore the basketball program to shreds, and arguably, they still haven't quite recovered. Those violations were much less serious than what Carolina is facing today, and yet, NC State took on these sanctions ON THEIR OWN, when the NCAA would very likely have done less.

What did Carolina do? Oh, they suspended a few guys for one game, and they're waiting for the NCAA. And the UNC Chancellor has issued a vote of support for Butch and walked by his side out of the Georgia Dome last Saturday.

The Carolina Way.

Oh, and in case any of you may be wondering why the ACC has yet to issue any official statement of any sort regarding this issue, since it involves one of its main programs, it's probably worth remembering that the current ACC Commissioner John Swofford was himself a former college football player..........at Carolina. A Morehead scholar, no less."

I always love the "we are your superbowl" talk. If you don't go to the ACC championship game (math majors, this equates to 10 out of the 12 acc teams) then your rivalry game is going to be your most anticipated game of the year. I'd much rather beat UNC than win the tire/champs/music city bowl if I could only have one, for recruiting purposes at the minimum. Pointing this out is obvious, and is an attempt by Mark Passout to boost UNC's image once again, and failing miserably. There are usually 10 or so teams that contend for a national title, so the other 111 should consider their rivalry game the biggest, or as they call it "superbowl." So to sum up, my level of interest goes: National Title, ACC Title, UNC, everything else. I don't really understand why that's fodder. I'd also venture a guess that Woody Hayes would have rather beaten Michigan than gone to a bowl game at all.

And 41-10 Paschal, enjoy that last memory as you humliated yourself, and your teammates getting drilled on Senior Day in front of the 40 UNC fans that bothered to hang around.

Quote :
"North Carolina has hired former Buffalo Bills tight ends coach Charlie Coiner to handle the defensive line, coach Butch Davis said during Wednesday's ACC teleconference.

Coiner takes over for John Blake, who resigned amid an NCAA investigation into improper contact with agents.

"He's got a diverse background," Davis said of Coiner, who was fired by the Bills in January. "He started his career early on the defensive side of the football. He's going to work with our defensive ends and our defensive tackles. We're still in the transition area of that."

More from ESPN.com

Dinich John Blake's decision to resign from North Carolina will help head coach Butch Davis keep his job, writes Heather Dinich. Blog

• Blog network:
ACC | College Football Nation

Davis said defensive coordinator Everett Withers and linebackers coach Art Kaufman will continue to help coach the defensive line until Coiner has gained enough exposure to the program and its personnel.

Prior to joining the Bills, Coiner coached the special teams for the Chicago Bears from 2001 to 2005.

"One of the real added plusses is that he brings a level of expertise with some special teams," Davis said. "It's unrealistic to expect in a short two- or three-day period of time that we'll see the effects of what he'll be able to do, but he's a good football coach. He's smart, he's bright, he's got good communication skills. He's a good teacher. He's got a unique perspective in that he has seen an awful lot of very good football players and I think it's a good addition."

Davis said Coiner had a strong pre-existing relationship with several of the coaches on staff, which was important, considering the timing of the hire.

North Carolina hosts Georgia Tech on Saturday in the ACC opener for both teams."

""Parker purchased some furniture out of a condo that was being sold in Miami," Pate said. "He asked Chris to move the furniture after it was loaded into the truck. Chris has continuously maintained that he was unaware there were drugs in the truck."

Ironically, Pate said Parker purchased the furniture from a penthouse in the Fontainebleau hotel in Miami Beach, Fla., which was the site of at least two agent-related parties this past spring. The NCAA is investigating whether North Carolina defensive lineman Marvin Austin and receiver Greg Little violated its rules by attending the parties."

this whole story just keeps getting very Alice in Wonderland-ish the more that comes out. Now we know what "nc swag" must be that Burney et al were tweeting about. So basically the UNC-CH defense was hanging out with a drug trafficker and going all over the country, ATL, Vegas, Miami. Maybe the UNC-CH foozball team are actually drug mules working for the Mexicans and they regularly have pounds of cocaine in their system from swallowing cocaine condoms. (just letting the imagination run a bit)

i'm still expecting them to get out of this with far less of a fallout than what we got with valvano back in the day. that's just how shit works with UNC. i'd love to be wrong, but i just see them getting off way easier than they should for this.

I might make t-shirts with this on it.
