I attempted to beat a 400 burpee challenge - I got 213 burpees through and had to stop. I felt like I couldn't breathe and was starting to hyperventilate. Weird considering that hasn't happened in a really long time.

I was down to 137 pounds but my weight crept up to around 139.2 this morning. I made cupcakes at 10pm last night and kept tasting the frosting (I was experimenting) and I think all the sugar late at night wrecked me. Plus I had a cupcake (I had to make sure they tasted okay).

This would explain why I decided to partake in the burpee challenge. If anyone is interested in the link to see if they can complete it, let me know and I will post it. I'm going to make it my goal to try to complete the whole thing in next month.

From the link: I did all 4 rounds in 1 hour 10 minutes and 22 seconds. I had to start doing push ups off of my knees in the third round, however I didn’t give up and I completed the entire workout using the easier modifications for beginners.

Burpee challenges seem to be kind of the rage right now. I watched a video last week of a guy doing 100 burpee pullups, and another one with a guy doing a burpee mile (which looks like death, seriously).

Yeah, I've seen the burpee mile video. Screw that.

I've done some of the Crossfit workouts with 100-150 burpees mixed in with other stuff, and that sucks enough. I'm not looking to do 400 burpees, even if they're by themselves, haha.

Valid point though. Sometimes more is less. I teach fitness classes and constantly have to remind students that it's possible to overtrain. And if they're blowing their diet, it doesn't matter how much they train.

4-Hour Body is a great resource. Timothy Ferriss is a bit wacky, but it's got some validity.

^train don't strain. You are not going to run a marathon if youve only ever done a 5k. You also can't run 15 miles every day, because your gains will diminish.

Same as bench press. Would you bench your bodyweight 400 times in a workout? Never. After about the 40th rep, you start catabolism and then what is the point. Are we all trying to look like Ethiopians?

I highly doubt anyone is encouraging anybody else in this thread to do it constantly. It seems to be more of a goal that people would like to finish once.

Pretty sure you are missing the point of the challenge

Its not always about being the biggest, strongest muscle bound jock. The guy who did the 3000 burpees isnt jacked at all. Its about challenging yourself mentally and physically and achieving a goal, regardless if you think its stupid or a waste a time.

I have a broken and sprained right ankle. I want to get back in the gym, but I'm going to need to modify my routine accordingly. I'm a little hesitant to use dumbbells until i get more stabilty back. I'd like to hear ideas for cardio and I'd also like to hear ideas for splitting an upper body workout into multiple days. Thanks!

For cardio and strength exercises, could you do a bunch of floor mat work? For example, one exercise you lay on your back and put your feet/arms in the air (like a dead bug) and balance a pilates ball - then you slowly drop your right hand and left leg to the floor while balancing the ball. Then there are moves like "the hundred"


(flap your arms up and down - you probably have seen it)

even with a broken ankle, you could still do seated leg raises, lying hamstring curls, hip adductor/abductor machines, and hyperextension exercises.

when i broke/sprained my ankle i was out of commission on anything legs for four months. my knee was jacked up too, but any movement that i did with the bad leg was incredibly painful.

and working out only one side is bound to give you problems later on as you're already compensating having the weak side - it'll just make you more out of whack.

Kiwi what are you eating day to day that you think sugar is hindering weight loss? I cut out a lot of simple carbs and sugar (basically upped my veggies) and noticed a difference.

I eat too many carbs I think. Bread, wheat, for lunch, cereal for bfast, potato for dinner, etc. It seems like I am eating too much of it. Maybe not do the diet as strictly but definitely pick up the low to no carb thing, thinking of trying to carbs out altogether for a week then slowly ad a few in. Dunno though, I always thought we needed SOME carbs ???

DONT cut out all together. Not a good idea.

I'm insulin resistant, and cut down to 25 net carbs per week and it was way too much, the second week I was soooo tired all the time, I would go to bed at 9pm wake up at 10 mins to 7am and barely make it through my half day preschool job, and if I didn't babysit I'd fall asleep by 2pm wake up at 6pm, and then repeat. It was bad. I found that I needed to eat a good breakfast, with whole grains as the carbs, and lots of protein, then I could eat low carb for lunch, and no carb snacks and no carb dinner. That helps a lot.

When I'm in a hurry I just eat a protein shake thing or a protein bar, but mine are all low carb, so that doesn't help. I honestly just eat a normal breakfast if I can and cut everywhere else. Whole grain toast with eggs and bacon and spinach and cheese is always yummy. I'm not the one to ask if you are looking for a beach body. I'm cutting out carbs cuz my body sucks at processing them, not because I want to be hot in a bikini.

Kiwi - try switching to only whole grains and don't get rid of carbs completely

carbs don't cause weight gain, EXTRA CALORIES cause weight gain - keep track!

elise I couldn't have said it better myself. This is exactly the kind of carb plan I do.

Breakfast is a banana, 1 cup old fashioned oatmeal with 1 cup blueberries and 1-2 eggs.

Lunch is something low carb but high protein and 2-3 servings of veggies. Dinner is no carb (if I had carbs at lunch. If I skipped carbs at lunch I have one small serving of healthy carbs with dinner) but also high protein with 2-3 servings of veggies.

I also drink about 4 to 5 liters of water a day but I run outside in the afternoons and like to stay super hydrated

the reason you felt like that is because you never got through the induction phase of a ketogenic diet. I'd wager your carbs were a lot higher than you thought they were, because carbs manage to sneak into everything. Even an egg has about 0.6 grams of carbs in it, even though you think of eggs as pure protein and fat. If you cut your carbs down to 0 per day based on nutritional labels, you're getting 10-20 grams of carbs per day. If you counted 25g based on labels, you were probably closer to 40-50. That's high enough that your brain will never switch over to ketones as a fuel source, but too low to provide you with enough glycogen to fuel your brain properly, let alone your muscles. For me, I either need to cut carbs out entirely and take it easy for 3 days until I hit ketosis, or I need to keep my carbs around 150-200 grams a day to fuel my brain and my workouts sufficiently when dieting.

And my body does gain weight if I eat a lot of refined sugars and carby things, but that is because I'm broken. Kiwi try looking at low glycemic index foods instead of low carbs, and if you count carbs, count NET carbs. That is total carbs minus fiber.

1^I actually did <25 carbs (and I was actually at way less than that. eggs and spinach every morning for breakfast, 3 carb protein shake with water, not milk, for lunch, and a simple dinner of a meat and either broccoli or cauliflower) for almost 3 months before I realized that was what was causing my fatigue. I figure 3 months and I should have been out of the woods.

elise, I know how you feel. I was diagnosed with insulin resistance in 2006 and just recently got off meds (aka to the point of having it completely under control)... sucks

how did you count your carbs though? Like I said, if you don't get through induction, your brain will never adjust to the diet. You literally have to cut your carb count to 0 for a few days to eliminate all the hidden carbs in food.

when low-carb diets are administered to epileptic kids for seizure prevention, they keep the kids at 0 carbs for a couple of weeks to make sure they get the kids through induction before bringing the carbs back up.

I admit, I never went zero. I never wanted to. I'm not lowering carbs for weight loss, only because of my PCOS.


and Samwise16, I'm glad you got in under control! I'm not on meds now, but I was on metformin for a long time. I will have to get back on it if I don't keep my diet on a tight leash.

yeah, I was on metformin until earlier this year.. I had been cutting down for a while and this spring took the plunge to get off it completely. I think I am doing fine but some days I need to have a little more control

if by chance you ever do go back to that diet for insulin resistance reasons, try taking your carbs to 0 for a week and then bringing them back up. It might help; it might not. I also found doing a lot of low intensity cardio the first three days helped me a lot to get into ketosis and not get the brain fog. After I got into ketosis though, I slept so much better than I normally do and woke up extremely well rested after 6-7 hours. I had more energy during the day too. When I didn't properly make it through induction or cheated on my diet enough to come out of ketosis, I felt like garbage.

I did a cyclic ketogenic diet a few years back where I would do ketogenic dieting for 8 days and then carb load for 2 days before repeating. On the 2 days I carbed up, the first carb meal would put me to sleep instantly from the insulin shock and I would spend more time sleeping than awake during the recarb process. I finally quit the diet because I hated the recarb process, but it worked pretty well for weight loss.

I do really well with the self control sometimes, sam. Mainly during the week. Not a lot of time to think about sweets. But on the weekends I end up doing things like baking a blueberry pie or deciding to make cupcakes for a visiting friend.

Insulin shock came send you to the hospital - why would you want to do that?

I ask that in a completely serious way. I have gotten to "ER levels" a few times (once being immediately after my glucose tolerance test) and those were some of the worst moments in my life.. I guess I just don't get the point. :\

WTF eleusis??!1 Are you seriously encouraging Elise to supply her body with Ketones for energy? So you are saying she should start causing her body to produce an acid that is going to start out eating her fat and eventually get down to the muscle? Once you start your body into ketoacidosis mode, then it gets difficult to get it out of that mode and being the fact that insulin works hand in hand with your immunity you are then opening up her to devastating outcomes. She is already insulin resistant so her body is having trouble reacting normally to just eating and everyday life. You are now encouraging her body to take on more of a challenge of ketones that her body will in turn not be able to control because her immunity is compromised. Insulin is the keys to the nutrients cells. Without those keys, her nutrients cells are not being fueled and therefore her immunity is being compromised.

Please help me out here. I am not usually this passionate about things but I am hearing what my endocrinologists for almost my whole life have discouraged as a healthy decision.

Ketones are going to melt away your tissues with acid?

A lot of nonsense and misinformation ITT. Please start reading and researching for yourself rather than taking everything a Doctor says as gospel. Often times Doctor's don't know WTF they are talking about; especially when making claims outside of their area of practice.

Unless under extreme metabolic/organ disorders, like diabetes, kidney or liver disease; anyone will be fine with significant diet modifications. And, usually, in order to achieve radical body composition changes at a significant rate, these modifications are necessary.

Carbohydrates are not required from the diet. The body will produce all it needs given enough protein and fat.
