The lack of MMS thing was always very simple. It was intended to 'free' users from the chain of network providers and use email instead. It has however backfired on them because there was essentially no backward compatible bridge.

That being said MMS is gay and a huge ripoff. Encourage multimedia emails instead.

the landscape email will really make my mom happy, she has had a hard time typing on the screen... not that I'm sure it's the phone fault.

WOOT FOR A2DP!!!

There's a bluetooth adapter that was previously locked down in the iPod Touch. Says it will be available, so that must mean they unlocked it. The 1st gen iPhones are SOL on that though...

I was sort of confused about the turn-by-turn stuff. Is that not available through the regular mapping app?

^^ from appleinsider
Quote :
"
Core Location will also finally make Turn-by-Turn GPS directions possible, although developers will need to sell maps separately as Google's free maps are not licensed for GPS mapping. "

so developers can use Core to build apps with turn-by-turn, but still cant use apple map app to build their maps.

Kinda sucks, I'd much rather just have turn-by-turn in the apple map app.

I get the reasoning though.

yeah, but that means Garmin and other GPS makers can now come out with them.

Plus, you will get apps where you can download maps to the iPhone so you can use them, and GPS, w/o a network connection

two of my biggest complaints are the lack of customization (themes) and organization options. Themes would be pretty easy for them to implement (hell, they could probably even charge for them).

I know introducing folders kind of goes against their simplicity shtick, but I should be able to throw my 4 pages of games into a single folder so i dont have to scroll across them everytime i'm trying to get to something in the back.

I don't think we'll ever see Themes simply because Jobs wants the OS to look and feel the way he intended. Just like with OS X. you can't customize but very very minimal things such as a color here and there unless you install a 3rd party app.

i can get there, and i can log in to the dev center...

but it takes me to the "we're updating the site" message

I WANT IT NOWWWW!

at least this gives me a chance to copy all of my apps and stuff over, yay ssh.

honestly, this is one of the reasons i love the iPhone SDK and the OS in general - you have to try really hard to design an ugly nib. things looks the same between applications, everything is pretty much seamless. on winmo, every app had its own way of doing things, and even the OS was butt ugly

also, there's not much left to bitch about... battery life and video are all that really come to mind.

there is no direct way to access files, so folders aren't necessary

here are some round ups of the event today, breaking down all the features

- new Application business models, like selling subscriptions inside applications
http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/03/iphone-sdk-focus-buying-content-from-within-apps.ars
too bad these issues were not addressed (especially the second)
Quote :
"This announcement seems to leave out two often-requested models. First, you still cannot offer customers paid upgrades to newer applications. These purchases seem to be limited to extra data only. Second, you cannot offer demo versions with limited feature sets. You can sell a one-level game for a buck and then upsell to more levels, but you cannot offer a time-limited full version of most applications.
"

- email support (through "email sheets") available through the API for all apps
http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/03/iphone-sdk-focus-application-based-e-mail-sheets.ars

- Maps enhancements, including embedding maps in other applications, and using map-like navigation in other apps, and the "thumbs up to turn-by-turn navigation" by 3rd parties
http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/03/iphone-sdk-focus-maps-from-your-apps.ars

- Bluetooth updates, including p2p, accessories, and stereo audio
http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/03/iphone-sdk-focus-bluetooth-enhancements.ars

- Q&A after the show. No Flash, and an answer on tethering ("We’re absolutely supporting tethering in the client side in iPhone 3.0," Forstall said, "but we’re working with carriers around the world to see when they can add tethering support on their networks. But we are building that support into iPhone 3.0." )
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/03/17/apple_qa_sheds_light_on_iphone_3_0.html

- New user features
Quote :
"including cut, copy and paste, which can be done within or across applications; MMS to send and receive photos; contacts; audio files and locations with the Messages app; and the ability to capture and send audio recordings on the go with the new Voice Memo app.

Landscape view will also be available for Mail, Text and Notes. Search capabilities will be expanded, allowing customers to search within Mail, iPod and Notes or search across all key apps by typing a key word or phrase into the new Spotlight search, conveniently accessed from the Home screen.

An updated Stock app will add the ability to display recent company news and current trading information like opening or average price, trading volume or Market Cap, and will offer a landscape view to see a full screen of any stock chart. Users will also be able to view shared calendars right on their iPhone with CalDAV support and sync their calendars with iCal, Yahoo, Google and Oracle.

I think he is talking about folders as in, a way to organize your launch screen where all the apps just hang out in a big ol' mass of un-organization right now. That is one of my biggest problems with it. SURRRRRE it's easy for the general masses to use so they don't have to get "confused" with folders or something, but damn, at least give us a choice to use some method of organization should we so desire.

Hate the pandering to simplest-minded-common-denominator.

oh, yeah. A redesign of the "springboard", is what I think it was being referred to. Several good jailbroken apps that do that.

yeah, that's too bad.

with the apps it sounds like spotlight will give you the option to search for you app instead of the flipping... for those who have a gazillion apps.

yes, they talked about it last July, and said it would be ready by September.

They addressed that today. they said it was "a bit late", and acknowledged that they had to rebuild the push architecture because they underestimated how heavily it would be used, evidenced by the something like 30 million push notifications ESPN was planning on using to alert its users of game scores

You can do both of these things for new apps.

1 day subscription = full version time-limited. Then you offer a outright purchase option.
Paid upgrades are easily accomplished with "in app" purchasing. Just requires a little tweak on the part of developers, but both are totally doable with the new models.

the analysis i saw said that the original app had to be not free in order for you to be able to offer any additional services through itunes.

except for the fact that in-app purchases have to come from an application that was paid to start with, free apps can't do that.
