I was thinking it was a tic-tac-toe game, as some 4-number patterns make an X, and some make an O, if you trace around the four numbers in order.

But you get:
X X X
X O X
O X O

Which it too many X's, and the order doesn't alternate, and the X makes a losing move.

it's a 6 x 6 magic square. 111 isn't unique: a standard 6 x 6 magic square's rows always add to 111.

the 6x6 square represents the Sun. Other sizes are for other planets. it's a traditional magic device that goes back thousands of years.

probably just keeps demons from eating his bones or something.
