If Nicks would have taken 4.5 per, I would have been happy with that. That's way below market for a potential #1 receiver. Would still prefer we'd have gone after a tackle with that money, but all the good ones are gone and went for way more than we could have afforded anyway. Now we just need to start offering 1 year deals to anyone who'll listen and hope we find someone serviceable.

No, but if we made him an offer and he flew to Indianapolis the next day, that's not a great sign. We probably offered him a third of what he thinks he's worth.

there are about 20 WRs on that list i'd rather sign before Nicks, especially considering he thinks he's worth about 5 times as much as he should get paid.

I bet we end up with Kenny Britt on the super cheap.

Signing another TE that can block might be a good option, considering our line is gonna need all the help it can get.

no thanks on Britt

Jones, Sanders, Rice interest me the most as top options I guess

followed by Williams, Ford (also filling Ginn's shoes), Collie, Simpson as WR2. good as long as we get someone better, but not good if they are signed to be top options in the passing game

Sanders would be a good returner as well as a nice wideout

and while I'm not sold on Hester as a WR, didn't he play CB at the U? Wonder if he'd switch positions

Agreed. Especially Jones. I'd much rather have him that Nicks.

I think Lance Moore could turn out to be a steal in this FA list as well.

Sign 1 of these:
17. Kenny Britt
18. Miles Austin

1 of these:
3. Lance Moore
27. Austin Collie
40. Lavelle Hawkins

1 of these:
25. Jacoby Ford
39. Devin Hester

And draft 1 of these at 28:
Brandin Cooks

And we're better than last year

If I were the Panthers, I'd roll the dice on a pair of 1 year deals on Nicks & Britt in hopes that at least one has a bounceback year and then drafting a pair of WRs as well. Would've looked at Strief or Penn to plug one of the T spots as well before drafting 1

Then again, Gettleman has a pretty good track record while my resume consists exclusively of playing Madden

I am not pissed that he's gone, particularly, just really irritated with how they handled it. You don't treat a player who's given you 13 years like that. You just don't.

Smith said he found out about it on the news and not from Gettleman himself. So that could've gone better I guess. There's no great way to do it, but he could've at least let him know personally.

Look at the Panthers sub on Reddit, too. The shit people are saying is so extreme. People talking about not rooting for the Panthers anymore because of it

Not to mention that half the people I see on FB ranting about it have never posted anything about the Panthers, let alone sports in general, ever.

Casual NFL fans are totally clueless, they have no idea what a salary cap is. Of course, they are also the only ones dumb enough to spend money on actually going to a game in the HDTV era, so teams have to cater to them.

Newton can't throw the ball to himself. I don't think there are any receivers left that would be in the first 15 Panthers players who come to mind.

This. Quick, explosive, good route runner. He can return kicks too.

James Jones would be great too. He had 15 TD catches two years ago IIRC

I think it's just like I always suspected, Gettleman never wanted Nicks. He knows more about him than any GM in the league and probably has good reasons. He signed for so little that there is no way even we couldn't have afforded him if we really wanted him. $3M with incentives up to $4.5M, 1 year. A pittance really.
