Oh man, in that article Linda Hamilton (Sara Conner from T2) is bulky? I remember looking at her body as a young girl thinking that she looked perfect. She still stands to be one of the most attractive bodies, imo. And Jessica Biel has a magnificent body as well. I would love to look like them and I think Joie is on par with them.

This seems top be a common topic in this thread. I never used to, but now I sweat at ridiculous levels when I exert myself or when it's super hot out. I don't necessarily like it, but such is life.

I am seeing more gains this week (mostly just some of that annoying pudge burning off probably) than I have since I started taking getting into shape seriously. It was one of those things this morning where you walk by a mirror and are like, "Whoa, this is working." And that is even AFTER having 7 or 8 beers last night, 3 of which were surely super high calorie

It probably has a bit to do with the last 8 days or so I've been doing more cardio than I typically do because I couldn't really do upper body lifting because of some muscle tightness.

I'll do an update at some point this week.

I can't seem to gain weight worth a damn. My goal was a poundish a week but from a few weeks ago when I first started weighing myself I am up a whooping 0.8lbs as of this morning. While 1/3 of the way into p90x and I am satisfied with my progress to this point, I'd like to add more to my chest and a bit to my arms. Bring on the "I told ya so"s

I don't think it's the work out that's the problem. I am certainly seeing more definition and such. It's just hard to go from 2 meals a day to 5-6 with my schedule. But I am chugging along. Like I said before, if I get through these 90 days and I haven't met my goals, I will at least be in decent shape to not feel out of place going into a gym and playing around with the machines and such.

^^ Are you doing the 1/2-1 gallon of whole milk a day? I've seen quite a few bulking diets that say to do that but I couldn't imagine having that much fat in a diet and not blowing up, even with my fantastic metabolism.

When im looking at nutritional information what else should i tqke into consideration other then calories? Also, is there a time when you should choose a something with heigher calories but lower sodium, fat, or heigher fiber?

^ While calories are important to keep in mind, it's also vital that you have a diet that has the right balance of carbs, proteins and (the right types of) fats. Eating low-cal is worthless if you fuel your body with garbage. Pay attention to sugar. Carbs aren't bad, just be sure that the carbs you eat offer plenty of fiber. Fat isn't intrinsically bad. Just be sure you eat monounsaturated fats and steer clear of saturated fats and trans fats.

Beware low-cal, fat-free packaged foods. These can be laden with High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).

Also, be sure the low-cal foods you eat are rich in vitamins and minerals. Vitamin deficiencies can contribute to weight gain and other health ailments.

^^you should worry less about content and eat what you like

depending on your goals, if you are trying to lose weight, shoot for:

50% protein
30% carbs
20% fat
(these are called your MACROS, other things matter, but these are most important)

right now, I'm trying to lose fat but keep muscle and am aiming for:
40% protein
40% carbs
20% fat
(get as close to these as possible without making yourself miserable)

track what you eat for a few weeks to see how much of what is coming from where

you will start to see what you should and shouldn't eat

how many calories you eat will depend on what you are trying to do

to lose weight, you'll probably restrict your intake by 500 or 1000 calories per day to lose 1 or 2 lbs per week. (yes you need to eat to lose weight the healthy way)

if you are trying to bulk up, eat more

don't freak out and try to starve yourself, this shit works

[Edited on August 16, 2010 at 11:22 AM. Reason : your diet should also be coupled with regular amounts of exercise]

My brother's girlfriend is in town and she's British so I was trying to explain to her how everything in the states has HFCS in it so I was looking through my parents fridge and cabinets for examples and I couldn't find anything! There was even a mellow yellow in the fridge but they have it with real sugar now!

This is obviously the exception. It's just funny how hippy my parents are. I couldn't find a single thing in the house with HFCS.

When you say balance the sugars with fiber i assume you mean foods like oatmeal or brown rice; heigh carb but heigher fiber. Also what sort of balance should i be looking for between fat, carb, and protein?

My biggest issue is that i eat out ~ once a day an i need to figure out how to make the best out o those choices.

Can anyone recommend a good nutritional book and calorie count website?

Woops damn i always mix the two up. Yeah Mountain Dew has real suger (it's called Mountain Dew Throwback). All the pepsi products are moving back to real sugar.

I don't know about Mellow Yellow. That'd be awesome though. I think Dr. Pepper is moving back to real sugar too.

I mean this will trick people though. They might think because it's real sugar it's alright to drink. It's still too much sugar and you shouldn't drink them every day.

^i use myfitnesspal.com. It's great and has android/iphone apps. A lot of people on here use myplate from the livestrong website. It's great too. The iphone app is incredibly buggy though. Why i stayed with myfitnesspal.

I use http://www.fitday.com and it serves my purposes, but I know the site of choice on here is http://www.thedailyplate.com or http://www.livestrong.com/thedailyplate/users/myplate/.

As far as eating out, if you absolutely have to, there are plenty of places you can get healthy subs/deli sandwiches. Just don't do the McD's, Wendy's, pizza, etc, etc. Since I cut the fast food mostly out (no one minds a cheat here and there) it has made a world of difference. To the point where I haven't had to really cut down my favorite past time, beer, to reach my goals.

Absolutely. A high-fiber diet will help you feel full faster. Avoid excess sugar, as sugar can lead to hunger spikes. Sugar is addictive, but once you break the sugar addiction, you'll find that making healthy choices is easier. You won't have the sweet cravings that can plague a diet. You'll also want to eat fiber-rich foods to help cleanse your system. High-fiber foods are key to digestive health. And remember, veggies are carbs. So instead of loading up on starchy carbs, be sure that you're eating tons of healthy veggies.

H8R's guidelines for ratio of fat to carbs to protein is pretty spot on.

Quote :

Where do you typically eat out? You'll find that a majority of menu items should be consumed sparingly, if at all. I'm pescetarian, and I can't eat about 90% of items on most menus.

^ GG on checking the nutrition prior to going out. If I go to a chain, I usually know exactly what I want prior to going because I have a general idea of the nutrition information. This is great to do for any chain restaurant. Chili's, for example ... SCARY on nutrition!

The only things I'll eat on that menu ^ are the salmon salad and the tuna tataki salad. And even then, the sodium content is awful.

Then again, it's almost impossible to keep sodium levels low when dining out. If you eat out for one meal a day, it's probably best to eat almost no sodium for the rest of the day.

Very true, sugar is still sugar. It's the same mistake a lot of people make with juices, too; they *are* good for you, but everything in moderation. Lots of good vitamins and whatnot, but depending on the brand, a glass of apple juice can have the same sugar as if you ate five or six apples. Make sure to read labels on juices just as closely as sodas and other drinks.

Oh man. The shrimp pasta at the Cheesecake factory has 2200 calories. haha. I stopped worrying about sodium intake so much. I grew up not adding salt to anything and I do like salty foods but i sweat so much i'm probably good. I've actually heard of athletes having to take sodium supplements because they sweat so much.

Yeah and i'm addicted to orange juice. I try to limit it to one cup a day though. It's funny though because i don't really have a sweet tooth. I don't really like chocolate and i'm not big on candy but I love fruit.

Counting calories can be so hard. Especially when you're trying to lose weight. I think I ate 5000 calories last Saturday after my run/hike. Probably burned 5500 that day. 500 calorie deficiency for the one pound/week weight loss. Of course that's not going to be accurate though. That could easily be off by 1000 or more. There's really no way to accurately measure it. So you just have to get into a routine and adjust it if need be.

^that typical for you? Ever get your cholesterol checked? lol.

just because you might be in shape is no reason to eat unhealthy. Of course it's the easy thing to do. It's hard to get all your calories in AND eat healthy.

Remember a healthy heart is important too.

Anyone see this if you live in Charlotte?

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/08/16/1625350/not-an-old-man-but-an-ironman.html

Jeez. I want to be able to do Iron Man's at 73.

V yeah but it's still unhealthy and if you continue eating that the rest of your life your heart isn't going to like you very much.

^yeah but your metabolism isn't everything. It only has a fraction to do with how healthy your body is. You still need to worry about your heart and your diet in general. Just because you have a high metabolism doesn't mean you can eat whatever you want. It just means you metabolize food faster. You still need to eat healthy.

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN0312588620100803

Recent study on how eating bad now can have a huge impact on your heart later in life. I know you don't have high cholesterol now but eating bad now can cause quite a few problems later in life irregardless of whether you're in shape or now.

There's been plenty of body builders who get obsessed with protein intake but end up dying of heart disease or stroke in their 50's or 60's because they ate so shitty when they were younger.

I mean just imagine how much healthier and in shape you could be if you actually ate healthy?
