Some pics from the womens soccer game this afternoon. Got a few nice shots, it was a little tough to shoot since: a) my telephoto sucks ass, b) sun was at everyones back, c) i suck, d) moving

When I edit pics in picassa, it allows me to complete and save a sharpen. Every now and then the image looks better when I do sharpen twice -- but when I go to save, it just reverts the image back to a single sharpen.....any ideas??

I was one of three official photographers covering a little league soccer championship in Winston-Salem yesterday (actually got the job from one of the pro photog's at Friday's NHL match and was recommended by Gregg Forwerck, the Hurricanes Photographer). Covered 15 games in one day. Shot 36GB worth of pictures. I mainly shot the 300 + 1.4tc on the 1D and boy, did I get a lot of comments. I was fully prepared for the day though, knee guards, thinktank waist belt with some modular pieces and my 30D with the 70-200 for close shots. I got a lot of common comments about how it looks like a bazooka, sounds like a Gatling gun and such, but a few comments stood out from the rest.

Because I was dressed in dress pants, had a nice collar golf shirt and sported my clip board with a roster of who were playing people kept coming up to me saying "You look like you have some authority around here" or "You look like you mean business". I also got some mixed identities today with people thinking I was the head organizer of the championship because of the clip board and the fact I was getting info from the coaches and talking with refs. Even a ref thought I was an on-site paramedic (although I am an eagle scout and know quite a bit of first aid).

But the funniest comment of the day happened at the 2nd to last game I covered. This one ref, who looked like he lives & dies for soccer - super serious -, stopped the game and ran over to me. "I know you like combat photography, but it's about to get combat photography here, right now..." I just gave him a blank stare like, wtf does that mean for a good 5 seconds cause I really didn't get what he was saying. In that 5 seconds I thought, well yeah, I could do war correspondent work if I was given the opportunity and enough pay, but what does that have to do with shooting 10-12 year old's playing soccer? Then he goes and said "That means you need to move back 5 feet son, you are too close to the line." Then I responded with "OHHHHHHHHHHH! So that's what you mean!", similar when you get that Eureka moment when solving a puzzle.

A known issue that google apparently has no plans to fix.
It's why I quit using it.

as reluctant as I am to do so.... my flickr is http://www.flickr.com/shevais I have put up some shots from our Alaska/West Coast cruise but none of them have been edited/cropped, etc. I plan on going through some of the better ones and do some work on them, when I find the time. I'm still learning every day and trying new things, especially with my new flash... that's a new world for me all together.

I know this isn't quite right.. but its kinda cool too. Its near by me. Any thoughts on angles or what i could do to get a more interesting shot of this? It was at night and my camera was having a hell of a time w/ the low light. Even in Manual mode, it (Nikon D40) would refuse to take a picture.

best bet is to manual focus in that situation. or try to focus on a spot where there is light and dark so it can see the contrast. if the camera just sees dark in the focus point it won't beable to focus. most of the lower range nikon cameras won't let you override that and take an out of focus picture unless you are in mf mode.

So, another question then. I do a lot of ring shots in a mini studio with just my on camera flash which creates that really bright reflection on the back inside. What light would be best to rid of that because I've seen lots of pictures without it.

Good pics bdaul though some look over exposed, if you play in a photoshop program you could fix those right up!

yeah, like i said, they were all taken on auto (without flash)

a lot of the pictures we took looking out at the sky and mountains look that way...the sky isn't blue, but more whitish like it was bleached out...they were still decent for auto i think.

i need to get photoshop but it is expensive

How to go about selling prints? Casually? How do I price these?

Both my mother and bf are pressuring me hard to sell prints these days. Hell, my mother is even trying to get me to go be a vendor at Cisco's Holiday Craft Fair, and sell framed prints there.

Yes/no? You all see some of my better work in this thread. I don't think I'm good enough, and I'm terrified of going out, having all these, and then everyone knowing my work is mediocre (perhaps because another photog is there, too?).

I generally haven't done printed work yet, mainly because I also don't know how to price the products, but the best way to get figures is to look at other photographers/prints and see how much they sell those.

Depends a lot on the size and whether it is being offered in a gallery. I generally think $15-$50 is a good price range for amateurs selling stuff in the 8x10 range. When you frame it the price goes up. When you display in a gallery the gallery will take roughly half of the sale price, which is why you rarely see anything hanging in a gallery for less than $100.

yea, i hear ya. a friend of mine has tried to pressure me to put some of my shit on istockphoto.com, but im reluctant and dont have the confidence in my own work to think it would be worth it. while i like the way some of my shots come out, i've never taken a photography class or even read any photography books, but i've won a few reptile-related photo contests over the past few years (even with my old point-and-shoot). i dont know that theres a big market out there for reptile photography anyway.

Ah, next time i will try manual focus. I was getting so pissed off when it wouldn't take and here my gf is with her little Sony PnS snapping away perfectly fine pictures. I found a cool angle where i was up close and looking up into the "goddess" carvings up in the rafters. It would have been pretty awesome i think, but it just wouldnt take.

Also there i was a big ugly metal railing going up the center of the stairs in the pic. Can you tell i photoshopped it out? hah that was my first real work w/ the clone tool. It is quite impressive.
