Butch Davis is a terrible coach

3rd & 10 with ~1:30 left in the game and UNC has 3 timeouts

Yates goes down with an injury. Instead of taking a timeout, they put in the redshirt frosh for pretty much the biggest play of the game. He fails and Yates returns on the next play.

I hope that UNC decides to keep Butch after all this....

This clemson game is pretty exciting. I left to go to the grocery store at half time, and I get back and in a quarter they've given away the lead... then they tie it up. Bananas.

He didn't use a timeout because the clock stopped when Yates went down

Yates sat out the next play because that's the rule. If the clock stops, you have to head to the sidelines for at least one play.

I assume thats to prevent a plyer from faking an injury to get a free timeout?

^^ When he saw that Yates was down, he could've taken a timeout to avoid having to take Yates out. There's some risk because at the time he didn't know if Yates could come back in, but it might have been worth it.

That happened in the NFL this past Sunday and I believe the coach had the option to burn a timeout (which he did) and that allowed the player come right back in without having to sit a play out

I think the wording of the rule is that the player has to come out if play stops, not the clock. Calling a timeout wouldn't have changed anything.

Clock was stopped the second the play ended. I don't think you can circumvent the rule with calling a TO, but if you could, it wouldn't have worked here.

i thought that if a player is injured in the last two minutes you have to take a time out if the clock stops. I'm not sure.

b.c if i thought that was a rule then they would have been left with two time outs.

Synrgy tweeting some interesting stuff right now. Had two articles to "file away" yesterday.

Seriously. A few agents wish they could get him to shut up too. RT @YieldToFrump Chris Hawkins...the guy UNC just can't get to shutup. 7 minutes ago via web

He's so fucking stupid it's amazing. I don't think he has any idea what sort of shit he's in.

Even funnier is how his association with Willie Parker makes Parker untouchable and unrepresentable as a player. No agent is going to go within miles of Willie when he's hanging around/living with guys with pending drug trafficking cases while unattached to a team.

I wonder what Hawkins thinks these agents he's burning are going to do, continue to employ him as a runner? Laughable idea.

Does he think that under the BMFD or any coming new Football regime, he's going to continue to have access to these UNC players? No, he can't be that dumb... can he?

Does he think Parker's going to get picked up by a team and he'll be able to continue to mooch off of him? Not likely.

This dude is too fucking stupid to be alive.

Where is the Rev. Al Sharpton when we need him????? He went to Durham when that gal claimed she was raped by white boys who played lacrosse at dook! It seems like some black guys are being treated unfairly (maybe not all) by the NCAA and others??? Come on down, Al!!!

I used to give UNC fans more credit than that but by god they've got some of the dumbest on the planet. Or maybe they are just all concentrated in one location in IC. Surely it's the Walmart fans that are that dumb or I'm going to wonder about the value of a UNC diploma myself.

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/13972270/livefortoday-attitude-at-unc-belies-inevitable-reality

Quote :
"CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- It was the home-opener for North Carolina in this season previously labeled The Season. So fans flocked to campus early, drank their beverages, ate their food, and there were no obvious signs -- in terms of atmosphere or mood -- that the school's football program seems just months from crumbling to pieces because of an NCAA investigation into agents and alleged academic fraud.

And I suppose that's the way it should be.

Live in the moment, enjoy the day, worry about tomorrow tomorrow, Monday Monday, Tuesday Tuesday, and a notice of allegations from the NCAA when a notice of allegations from the NCAA arrives. Till then, cheer on. But it was all still strange for an outsider like me, because I felt like I was watching people diagnosed with terminal cancer get excited about an afternoon at the bingo hall.

Have a blast, I guess.

But the long-term prognosis remains dismal.

"I'll let the school worry about that," said Kent Walker, a UNC fan from Charlotte who was carrying a football around Kenan Stadium after tailgating with his wife [Gaby] and two children [Kent and Cristina]. "We just want to have fun at the games."

Maybe next game.

North Carolina lost 30-24 on Saturday to a Georgia Tech team that lost last week to a Kansas team that's already lost to North Dakota State and Southern Miss. So things did not go well for coach Butch Davis on this gorgeous afternoon, and I can't imagine they'll end well for him, either, because, as you know, it's a mess down here."

My sister went to her first Carolina game Saturday, she's a "Tarheel fan"--wouldn't be able to tell you the name of anyone on any team--and came back to me and said

"you know it was kinda weird. there were people all dressed up and wearing sweaters and khakis". I just laughed and thought of Gregg Doyel's hate mail response.

Actually the rule is that if you are out of timeouts you have to go to the sideline. Butch still had three timeouts and could have elected to use one instead of the "injury timeout" which required Yates to go to the sideline.

No, the rule says nothing about being out of timeouts. If the team doesn't use a timeout, the injured player has to sit out a play. That's what happened, and that's what the rule is.

For everyone's edification...

Quote :
"Injury Timeout
ARTICLE 5. a. In the event of an injured player(s):
1. The referee may charge himself a timeout provided the player(s) for
whom the timeout is taken is removed from the game for at least one
down.
2. The player(s) may remain in the game if his team is charged a
timeout in the interval between downs or the period ends.
RULE 3-3 / PERIODS, TIME FACTORS AND SUBSTITUTIONS FR-73
3. After a team’s charged timeouts have been exhausted, the injured
player(s) must leave for one down.
4. Whenever a participant suffers a laceration or wound from which
oozing or bleeding occurs, the player or game official shall go to the
team area and be given appropriate medical treatment. He may not
return to the game without approval of medical personnel (A.R. 3-3-
5-I-VII).
b. Any official may stop the clock for an injured player(s). When in
question, the clock shall be stopped for an injured player.
c. To curtail a possible time-gaining advantage by feigning injuries,
attention is directed to the strongly worded statement in The Football
Code concerning the feigning of any injury.
d. An injury timeout may follow a charged team timeout.
e. The referee may charge himself with a timeout for an injured official.
f. After a timeout for an injured Team B player, the play clock shall be set
at 40 seconds.

The team could have used a timeout and Davis decided not to. If he had burned one of his 3 timeouts Yates would have been able to be in for the third down. He decided not to which was a bad move...
