I still don't understand why anyone would pose for one of these.

Also, I'm not sure I think the amount of free advertising for the business outweighs the content of the advertising.

downtown is changing for the worst. it's like the same bars as when I was in college (good thing) but now your have to stand in line / pay "membership" fees to get in. going out on weeknights is so much better because you can actually enjoy the bars, but it's few and far between when I can find a weekday off and a friend with one too.

The hell you talking about? First of all, yeah there are plenty of shit bars, and bars that are shitty b/c of the clientele that congregates there at certain hours (like after 10 on weekends). But there are also plenty of cool fun chill bars. Way the fuck more of them than 10 years ago.

And paying "membership" fees is a NC state law, so I suggest you take up that fight with them, and not slam the bars for it.

^And its been a law for a VERY long time, at least long enough for any TWW members.

I used to have a membership for Havana's in Raleigh but dropped it the last time I went there and it looked like a frat party.

If you're going to the same bars you went to in college then you're going to have a shitty time. There are new places opening up all the time now, and I have found a lot of spots that are pretty chill.

None of the sentences that come after your claim that "downtown is changing for the [sic] worst" support said claim.

1. Same bars as when you were in college, which you then claim is a positive
2. as others have said, the membership ordinances have been around since you were still shitting your diapers.
3. you can't coordinate schedules with your friends to actually go out on a weeknight.

Therefore downtown is changing for the worse?

Are you retarded?

man, y'all are really butthurt about this.

did you miss the part where I said you have to stand in line to get into the same bars (that have been around since college)? I'm saying it feels more overcrowded. I get that there are more bars, but there are also way more people going downtown to patronize said bars. I have not been able to find a casual/laid back bar downtown like I used to be able to. I feel like Glenwood used to be "the spot" and you could find chiller places around Fayetteville St. but now both are packed and I end up going to Five Points, North Hills, etc. to find quieter spots.

It's an opinion. I'm not trying to bash the bars and I certainly haven't been to all of them. It's just a product of the city growing, the demographics changing, and the scene responding.

I avoid Glenwood S. and Fayetteville St. like the plague on the weekends. Its a mad house of people looking for the loudest, drunken hole available. I think those two streets are so popular because the crowds coming in on the weekends have no clue what the rest of the city offers. They want to go and get drunk and assume the only places worth going to are the same places that were popular 10 years ago. They have no idea that other neighborhoods downtown have started sprouting up with better alternatives.

I've been pretty happy the last few times heading to the Warehouse District and surrounding areas. Even the blocks surrounding Fayetteville have some really awesome chill spots. Our last crawl we ended up in Boylan neighborhood to hit up Trophy and I was surprised to see a lot of great late night spots.

^^I live in the Warehouse District and I agree - it's where I spend a lot of my time not just because the bars are a block away, but because they're my favorite now. Circa is especially awesome.

^It is definitely a product of getting older, no doubt.

Is this just for places that don't serve food or something? None of the bars I go to have any type of membership fees.

If you sell liquor and don't sell food, you gotta be a membership club.

Just to put things into perspective, the population of Raleigh has more than doubled in the last 15 years, from under 200,000 to over 450,000. That just might have something to do with it. Hell, over 1,000,000 people now live in Wake County.

Overall I'd agree that a lot of bars get overcrowded on weekends. The problem is that Raleigh doesn't have a big enough (and thirsty enough) downtown-centric population. Most bars are empty on weeknights and rely entirely on weekend revenue. Feast or famine unfortunately (my view on things at least).
