"Ten days ago, frustated members of the group of 12 that are tied up in agent and academic gate began to talk on their colleagues in basketball as they felt they were being made scapegoats. I am hearing that the football players realize administration is so conservative they won't clear unless a slam dunk. Many realize they will never play for UNC again so they have nothing to lose. The beans are spilling on basketball too. "

i want to blow this off so badly, but it's so god damn sexy.

Where is that quote from? One of the good sources or just speculation? I WANT TO BELIEVE.

I don't care if this investigation takes an entire year before the news drops if it means the basketball team gets hit too.

Besides, by then this thread will be 500 pages of awesome.

haha, this deems may dude, what a phony. He was talking last week about sucking it up, and now he's clearly riding the "the ncaa just has an axe to grind against butch". Also, notice how he keeps admonishing the tarhole faithful to "put of their minds" the guys who aren't cleared, but he starts off every answer with a rehashing of who they thought they'd have and yada yada yada excuses.

Quote :
"What about the play of the UNC team against Georgia Tech game did you find surprising or unexpected?
Deems: I was surprised that we were in the game at the end just as much as I was surprised in the LSU game. I still don’t think people realize how depleted we actually are. I articulated this last week when you asked if we had momentum. Momentum?

We have to be realistic! Let’s go back to June and look at our depth chart (pre-Paul Dees’ enforcers dropping in). "

Quote :
"Deems: The actions of the players who made terrible choices, coupled with either the muscle flexing or painful rumination exhibited by those in charge of punishing these kids, have deemed this a rebuilding year on defense.

We as fans have got to realize this and be patient. I was really impressed on how we adjusted to the triple option in the second half. We were hurt by the dive, but that is just lack of depth at defensive tackle. The rookie corners (who by the way were never chop blocked in high school) got better as the game went on. There is no way to simulate chop blocking in practice; so they were learning on the fly. I think we thought we were going to get Deunta Williams back and that would’ve made a huge difference.

We should learn to expect to have nothing given to us or to get our hopes up (this is the UNC Football fan’s real ‘Carolina Way’). Nobody has been right about any of this who’s cleared and who’s not yet; so expect everyone gone and if they return, be pleasantly surprised. These young defensive players will get better and better each week."

Quote :
"Deems: Math. Count the guys who are active and put out of your mind the others. Let’s focus on the consummate teammate like Johnny White, who has played multiple positions plus special teams and never complained. Coples, who moved inside and didn’t complain and played almost every snap Saturday. Elleby, who moved over to D-line from O-line. Zach Brown running down on kicks and punts. Elzy, our fullbacks, our young corners, our offensive line, our depleted defensive line, linebackers, quarterbacks, tight ends and wide receivers - all of whom have done the right thing. Our current coaching staff, who have gotten these kids ready to play and are guilty of no more than probably putting too much trust in the guys that made mistakes to do the right thing. These guys are who we have to go to war with, let’s get behind them.

And for the guys who aren’t cleared, their mistakes could not have come at worse time. The people or organizations that are to assign punishment have tipped their hand without saying a word. Their silence is making it excruciatingly painful. There are many theories to why it is that way, but the facts are that these kids who made the mistakes have cracked a door and it is being kicked in.

The anti-football establishment coupled with the media, opposing teams and their fans are reveling in this right now. They want this team to fall apart, they want dissension between administrators, coaches and fans. Outsiders can’t stomach us being dominant at everything. We are dominant at everything but football right now, but we’re coming and it's scaring them.

The more they frustrate us with their silence, sensationalistic reporting, and their rumor and speculation, the more they hope we capitulate and come to their side. Their side: that a good, successful football program is just not in the cards nor is it good for our beloved university.

How are we as fans going to respond? Are we going to let them succeed? I’ll take us, Johnny White and the others that deserve it, against them."

this is one of the funniest most delusional threads ive seen yet on IC, lots of lulz

http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=78&f=1408&t=6408146

Quote :
"Butch needs to pull an Urban Meyer and Confront JP Giglio

According to TarheelTimes: "It’s one thing to ask tough questions and write articles, but it’s quite another to interrupt a coach’s postgame press conference by showing up late, walking in front of cameras and placing a voice recorder on the podium, as the News & Observer’s J.P. Giglio did on Saturday. Butch Davis was well into his opening statement when Giglio walked in. “We’ll wait,” Davis said. “That’s OK.” Afterward, a local television reporter chastised the incredulous Giglio."

This is really ridiculous and he needs to be brought down. I cannot beleive he hasn't been confronted about it or had his press credentials threatened to be removed. I know I couldn't take it week in and week out. The N&O is lucky to have this quality "journalist".

I mention Urban Meyer because he went off on that one reporter after cornering the wideout into "bashing" his son Tim Tebow."

Keep in mind IC is the biggest college board on Scout. They have more users than anyone. PP can be pretty one sdied at times, but IC has about 3-5% of it's users that actually went to UNC, the other 95+% are not exactly into the academic portion of the university. That's the difference between PP and IC, I'd like to think we're in the 20-30% range which makes some of the reading tolerable. PP has the usual "we're going al the way this year" blah blah blah, but IC has some of the most delusional stuff about life in general I've never heard/seen/read on any other website.

For example, during our 08 beatdown we supplied to them in Kenan, a thread was started to petiton the NCAA to make "stripping the ball" a penalty since UNC was fumbling....Recently, as noted above, countless IC posters have decided that Baddour should pull Giglio's press pass simply because he was asking tough questions to Butch (Keep in mind UNC is a journalism school that the N&O has been catering to for decades). They have also had hundreds of guys irate that the 12 held out aren't playing simply to help recruiting, completely unaware that the NCAA would surely level penalites even greater than USC if UNC were to do this. Not one or two guys, hundreds of them. Like I said, some of the most delusional opinions about football and life and the way things work.

^Absolutely agree. Some of the posts/threads over on IC are some of the most delusional ones I've ever read. Back when this was just getting underway, maybe a month or so ago, there was a thread that titled something along the lines of "Someone should investigate the NCAA" because the NCAA was dragging their feet (which they still maintain...honestly, do they think the NCAA has been done for some time now and are just waiting for a good time to announce? The USC investigation took years). And they say State fans are delusional. While I can often get a good laugh on IC...it's almost sickening how arrogant and "holier than thou" they act, so I have to remember to only look at IC in moderation.

one guy tried to explain to everyone that it wasn't the ncaa dragging their feet, they were waiting on unc to provide their report on the academic investigation before proceeding

everyone immediately jumped all over his case without even attempting a reasonable conversation

actually the slur du jour over there, against people with thousands of posts is "wolpfie". You get called that if you say anything remotely conciliatory, and obvious state fans are told consistently to leave forums.

the funniest one i read yesterday was UNC fans complaining about our schedule. People tried to explain to them that schedules are made 3 years in advance so "State couldn't help that Cincy was so bad."

Then a few state posters, who were very nice, no trash-talk tried to say the same thing, and then it was "you state people always start this argument over schedule strength."

Its a friggin IC thread started by IC people.

^^ I've noticed that same thing in my limited reading over there (usually when I know they're in meltdown mode). If someone seems level-headed, rational, or reasonable they are quickly called a "wufpecker" and told to move along.

And ^, I read the same thread. I don't necessarily think that the thread about SOS was meant to say that our's was overly weak, but that was the impression it gave. None of those holes could understand that our schedules are actually quite similar, with a UNC have a slightly harder schedule this year. It was hilarious reading one of their posters actually trying to claim that William and Mary was a significantly harder game than Western Carolina. Sure William and Mary is a better FCS team than Western Carolina, but come on...FCS is FCS regardless of how good they are. And when present with facts (our SOS being ranked harder than theirs), they simply ignored it.

Might as well toss this question out to the wolves

My understanding is that the dozen or so players that are under investigation for cheating aren't playing the games but they continue to be a part of the practices. I can understand why they wouldn't play the games. If they play the game and are later deemed ineligible they would have to forfeit any wins.

So I guess I was wondering why this didn't extend to practices. Ineligible is ineligible, so it seems like they're getting an unfair advantage by practicing with ineligible players. I.e. their team gets better in practice because the people in practice are more talented and thus harder to score against/defend against. If you follow...

I mean what's to stop a team from bringing in a bunch of non-qualifiers (or the Panthers defense) to play their fannies off during one of their practices to help their Dairy Queen team get better.

/what critics?

^^That's totally legal. How you practice is up to you, as long as you meet NCAA limitations on total time. How a coach wants to work his team is up to him, but really he's just sitting around with wasted scholarships now while these guys sit out. Sorry for him.

I was just telling my husband about the SOS thread on IC. I might give UNC the edge on OOC strength simply because they played LSU but on paper our schedule was ranked as 14th hardest while theirs is 24th. We have some tough road games.

They also like to forget how they opened up the last 2 seasons with Citadel and McNeese State (who almost beat them), while we opened up the last 2 years against an SEC team ourselves

But what kind of short term memory loss do you expect from a fanbase who expects to blow us out this year, despite the fact that we've beaten them every time Butch and TOB took the field

UNC and NC State arguing about strength of schedule... what a joke.

SOS will truly matter for maybe 2-4 teams a year, this isn't basketball. Neither team is fighting to be in the BCS championship so the only way it would even come up is if we went undefeated(I'm guessing not going to happen).

Besides, everyone in the ACC's SOS is garbage simply by just playing in the horrid ACC.

^ Thanks for your insightful and completely worthless post!

State and UNC can argue about SOS as it will impact their chances to make a bowl game. If State played a bunch of schools from the FCS, MAC, and Conference USA, they could potentially be 4-0 and would only need two ACC wins to get a bowl game. Same goes for UNC.

^^ also, it wasn't state and unc-ch fans arguing over SOS. It was unc-ch fans complaining and opining that if they sceduled like "moo-U" then they'd be 3-0 and everyone would be slobbering all over them and they would be top10 by now. People politely tried to inform them otherwise but to no avail.

FROM IC

Quote :
"NCAA REQUIRES LOSS OF CONTESTS, REPAYMENT FOR BURNEY AND WILLIAM
NCAA REQUIRES LOSS OF CONTESTS, REPAYMENT FOR BURNEY AND WILLIAMS

Chapel Hill, N.C. ----- University of North Carolina football student-athletes Kendric Burney and Deunta Williams must miss competition and repay benefits as a condition of becoming eligible to play again, according to a decision today by the NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff.

Burney, who received $1,333 in benefits, must miss six games and make repayment of $575.19 to a charity of his choice. Williams, who received $1,426 in benefits, must miss four games and make repayment of $450.67 to a charity of his choice. Both student-athletes already have sat out two games.

“We plan to appeal the length of the suspensions,” says Dick Baddour, North Carolina Director of Athletics. “While I respect the NCAA process, I believe the penalties to be unduly harsh given the individual circumstances in these cases.”

The university declared both student-athletes ineligible for violations of NCAA agent benefits and preferential treatment rules. According to the facts of the case submitted by the university, these benefits in part included trips to California, Atlanta and Las Vegas for Burney and two trips to California for Williams. The majority of the benefits Burney received were from an individual who meets the NCAA definition of an agent. According to NCAA rules, an agent is any individual who markets or promotes a student-athlete. The majority of Williams’ benefits were preferential treatment violations associated with visiting a former North Carolina football student-athlete.

When a school discovers a student-athlete has been involved in an NCAA rules violation, it must declare the student-athlete ineligible and may request the student-athlete’s eligibility be reinstated to the NCAA national office staff for consideration. Reinstatement decisions are made independently of any NCAA enforcement process.

During the reinstatement process, NCAA staff review each case on its own merits based on the specific facts. Staff decisions are made based on a number of factors including guidelines established by the Division I NCAA Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement, the student-athlete’s responsibility for the violation, as well as any mitigating factors presented by the university.

The university can appeal the decision to the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement, an independent panel comprised of representatives from NCAA member colleges, universities and athletic conferences. This committee can reduce or remove the condition, but it cannot increase the staff-imposed conditions. If appealed, the student-athlete remains ineligible until the conclusion of the appeals process."
