These images are the IGES Maximum Potential Intensity plots valid today. The weather mail list has good discussion and these were brought up today. Look at the potential values along and in the Gulf area. Interesting numbers.

The current forecast track has the eye passing over my hometown where I was born. Its only like an hour drive from the Gulf, so I'm afraid it might get fux0red.

CNN reported that this morning.

The prediction was for it to be eventually a cat 3 as of yesterday. Then they said it could be a category 3 this morning and eventually a 4.

This morning it hit a 4 and they said that it could get breifly to a 5.

Usually the threads in the lounge are reserved for someone dignified threads and repsonses. Maybe not so much anymore after reading some of the shit posted on this page.

However, I hope they take care of the aquarium this time (unlike in NO) since Galvaston has a huge aruarium that houses 100s of penguins ---

I hope people have learned from Katrina and will get the hell out of town. If I lived within two hours of the beach or more anywhere along the Gulf Coast (in Texas) I would be peacing out.

Yeah, but Houston is above sea-level. New Orleans is was not. Flooding won't be nearly as much of an issue with Rita as with Katrina. Okay, maybe in Galveston, but not Houston.

But yay for the gas prices that'll probably top $5/gal...

It will likely drop from a category 5 due to the difficulty of a storm maintaining that kind of strength.

I wonder if it could drop to a 3.

Looking at the maps and considering the warmth of the water I would imagine it would stay a 4 if/when it drops.

It just busted the 900mb mark:

897 MB

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT3+shtml/220249.shtml
THE ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 897 MB...26.49 INCHES.
THIS MEANS RITA IS THE THIRD MOST INTENSE HURRICANE IN TERMS OF
PRESSURE IN THE ATLANTIC BASIN.

Why is this year's hurricane season so bad? And also what happens if they run out of names after Wilma? Just curious if that has ever happened.
