or black guys
actually, i dont know of anyone who has ever had a launch party for an OS. And, unlike the "activities" they mention in the video, I assume that any "launch party" would really just be an excuse to drink.
At least for games, you can go back home and play the game.

Actual Reaction: some cool stuff there
Cynical Reaction 1: good they got that video out now, before Apple debuts a multi-touch mouse later this month
Cynical Reaction 2: watching videos like this and the MS Surface demos, you'd think the most popular activity people do on their PCs is pushing pictures around a screen and resizing them in and out 10/6/2009 8:46:15 PM |

Have you guys ever used the new track pad on a MacBook? Or created anything in a 3d app, Photoshop or drawing program? Ever played a video game? All have real, tangible, proven benefits with multitouch.
I did think the timing was interesting though 10/6/2009 11:18:27 PM |
agentlion All American 13936 Posts user info edit post |
yes, I use multitouch on my MBP all the time, for a variety of things. "I'm just saying," though, that whenever MS shows off multitouch, be it on the Surface or on these demo mouses, they tend to focus heavily on marginally important tasks, like moving files around on a desktop or resizing pictures while viewing. All that said, knowing that actions like that are probably used simply because they make good demos 10/6/2009 11:46:56 PM |
Noen All American 31346 Posts user info edit post |
^you got it. It's really hard, and expensive to make build production uses for multi-touch. Apple has done an excellent job of natural integration on the MacBooks, and the Surface has done some awesome stuff with multi-touch (just a shame that almost no one has actually used a Surface to see it) 10/6/2009 11:54:26 PM |

http://www.neowin.net/news/more-than-just-pink-coming-on-april-12
A couple new releases rumored for April 12th.
Quote : | "Next Monday, April 12, looks set to be a busy day for Microsoft. With their mystery event - confirmed earlier today as the launch of Project Pink - scheduled for then, it seems that the day may also see a few more product launches and milestones reached by the Redmond company.
The Pink phones, described by Paul Thurrot as a "new side business" and said to offer "a texting/social networking phone platform for teenagers", will have their launch event in San Francisco on the same day that the new version of Microsoft's Visual Studio software is launched in Las Vegas (and other locations worldwide). The Visual Studio 2010 launch day has been scheduled for a while now, having been delayed from an originally planned March 22 date.
We're also hearing that following the release of the latest Zune 4.5 firmware update yesterday, the rumoured 64GB Zune HD device will launch on April 12. The new model seems identical to the existing 16GB and 32GB Zunes but with a large increase in memory capacity. Don't expect a lavish launch event for this, but keep your eyes peeled if you're thinking of buying a Zune sometime soon.
Even more rumours that have come our way suggest that Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 will hit RTM (Release To Manufacturing) on the very same day, keeping to the RTM target set last month. The latest version of Microsoft's Office suite is expected to be released on June 15 of this year.
In date-related news, Adobe also plan to launch a new product next Monday with the release of their Creative Suite 5 (CS5) range of software. The suite includes new versions of Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat." |

it's hard to do that when their best examples of how to use surface essentially translate to arts and crafts playtime. all they needed to do was say "this device can distinguish between a pen and your finger/hand", and leave the rest up to one's imagination. OR actually demo some original ways to use it in real life...there's only so much fingerpainting and shuffling photos around that people do on their computers. 4/10/2010 2:41:21 PM |

Microsoft ... come ON ... please, for the love of sanity, hire a marketing team to name your products.
Anyway, here's the announcement for their tablet version of Windows 7: it's Windows CE--I mean Windows EC 7, which is the newest member of the Windows EC--I mean Windows CE platform. Or something like that. Yikes.
http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2010/06/microsoft-offers-windows-embedded-compact-7-ctp.ars
Quote : | "Microsoft has announced the Windows Embedded Compact 7 public Community Technology Preview (CTP). Windows Embedded Compact 7 is the next generation of the Windows Embedded CE platform, which according to Microsoft, provides OEMs with the tools and technologies to deliver "the power of Windows 7" across another family of specialized devices, such as slates, portable media players, e-readers, and so on. Hardware manufacturers and developers will get resources to help bring high-performing devices to market quicker with support for multicore CPUs along with the latest ARM-based architecture and tools, including Platform Builder, Visual Studio, Expression Blend, and Silverlight for Windows Embedded.
For consumers, the release will eventually hold the promise of being able to share and manage content across networked devices (including new HDTVs) with Digital Living Network Alliance, a new media library with more codecs and seamless integration with Windows 7-based PCs. The new version also brings a major update to Internet Explorer that includes support for Adobe Flash 10.1.
Enterprise users will have an easier way to connect to corporate e-mail, calendar, and contacts through Microsoft Exchange 2010 AirSync or Microsoft Exchange Server support. They will also get Microsoft Office and Adobe PDF viewers to access documents, and Windows 7 Device Stage to transfer files between PCs and portable devices. " |
Asus is on the ball with showing it off, and it doesn't look half bad:

This is awesome and really allows for high resolution image sharing without taking a massive hit on personal bandwidth, win!

Quote : | " Microsoft has pulled a new product out of its development labs, Zoom.it. The tool allows you to share high resolution web images easily and professionally.
Zoom.it will take any URL and convert it to a high resolution image using Silverlight’s deep zoom format and does a remarkable job at it too. With simple mouse movements you are able to move around the high resolution images will little effort. " |

I think Kinect is going to be a hit. Its not readily apparent for most people unless one is to realize that MS has an uncanny way of coming out with new tech and gaining and sustaining ground in whatever market it enters. I'm a big MS fan (as if its not obvious!), but they do sell a lot of shit that's 'broken' on day one, as I suspect Kinect may not necessarily well received, but somehow they are good at it! They're pretty amazing over in Redmond. 10/19/2010 5:52:19 AM |
