I did an easy 10 today. But I've also been running a 5k everyday so I've backed off of the mileage on the bike. I may start trying to do sprint triathlons in the near future.

There are other food jerseys here:

^^^ That's insane. I would love to attempt that, but I just hurt my shoulder three weeks ago in a fall and there's no way I could be ready in time. I know there's another guy joining RAND in about a month who's big into hill climbing, so I bet I can convince him to train for it with me next year.

did 45 miles including Lookout Mtn. again (3000+ vertical in 4.4 miles, 12-14% grade), it's a good climb halfway through my route.

unfortunately my friend's rear derailleur broke on the way down (20 miles from home)... thank goodness 2 guys stopped who had a chain breaker so we converted his bike into single speed to limp to the nearest bike shop

i'm building up another old road frame now but its too small. gah. so i shall either

A) find new old frame to build up.

B) buy a shiny new cyclocross'esque do-all bike like a Surly Cross Check

C) buy frame from above and build something up over a little time.

http://www.bikesdirect.com sure has some tempting deals as well.

There's been some discussion on pedals earlier but I need an opinion on a good entry-level road pedal. I have the toe cages that I had when I got the bike. Probably looking to spend $50-100.

Shimano PD-R540 SPD-SL Road Pedal - Performance has it for $54.99

I'm more of a beginner since I'm mostly cycling just for the Triathlons, but I really like my pedals - http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1033535_-1___

They're SPD clips and I guess technically mountain biking, but I think they're the easiest to get in and out of that I've tried.

Did a good group ride this morning about 25 miles averaging 22/23. Last mile, the group pushed the pace to 28mph and I was struggling to hang on. Felt great though.

Oh an I sold my Davidson and got a tri-bike since that is what my riding is for.

Racked up 40 miles this week so far. I'm planning to ride the Tour to Tanglewood....anyone else signed up for it? I've checked this year's route on mapmyride...has anyone ridden it in past years? Experiences?

I'm looking to do it this year too! Last year's was moreso the Tour to Thomasville due to a hurricane scare.

Lesson learned then... I was only good for 37 miles of hills in a day, not 45

^^^ Thanks man.

I'd love to do some official rides this fall. How ok are they with TT/Tri bikes? I know some roadie clubs frown on it, but it's the only bike I have at the moment.

Doing the Mayo Lake Triathlon tomorrow up in Roxboro. If anyone else is going and sees my bright yellow bike, say hi.

Just signed up to do 70 miles in the Tour de Cure. I've raised $60 in my first 18 minutes. Crazy! http://main.diabetes.org/site/TRC/TourdeCure/TDC230458030?pg=peditor&fr_id=6670&px=5137472

got a flat today. luckily i was riding a park loop and another cyclist stopped and helped out since he had a frame pump (is that what the mini pump that you can attach to the bike is called?).

i definitely want to pick up one of those frame pumps - any recommendations?

Picked up a pair of Shimano SPD-R540 SL pedals over the weekend. I've had a couple of rides since then and haven't fallen over (yet). I definitely notice an improvement in power transfer. It's not drastic, but that has more to do with my ability level than the pedals

I can clip into the right pedal easily, the left one needs some trial and error.

Yet is the key word there. Everyone falls over in clip-in pedals at least once (for me, 3 times). Usually it is at the most embarrassing moment possible.

I remember "eating it" a couple of times, once in a neighborhood with some cutie pie washing her car. My advice is to try and fall on your left side, that way you don't bend or bang up your derailleur. But sometimes you can't help it.

Damn. Just noticed this thread.

After being laid out all spring after some minor surgery I tried running again but found that my knees aren't quite up to it yet. I picked up a Trek 7.2 over the summer and am averaging about 22 miles a night around town during the week. My legs are getting in sick shape and I'm finally back to where I can run a few miles in the morning. As it turns out I like biking a lot more and get the bulk of my cardio from that.

I'm still fairly sore by the time that Friday rolls around but I'm hoping to start doing some longer all day rides on the weekends in another month or two.

Did 56 miles today with three climbs of 1000 ft (Livermore to Lake Del Valle to Tracy back to Livermore). The worst was that it was near 100 degrees F when I finished : /

Shadowrunner,
If I'm not mountaineering next summer in Peru I'm going to do the original Death Ride for sure:
http://www.deathride.com/
It seems a bit more feasible, plus the Trinity Alps are absolutely beautiful.

Have you considered the AIDS/Life Cycle ride from San Francisco to LA? It's not a race or particularly hardcore, but it's 550 miles over 7 days and sounds like a fun experience. Being a bit more laid-back means I'd have an easier time convincing other people here to join in.

http://www.aidslifecycle.org/

I'm most likely going to be working in India next summer from late June until late September, but I'd be up for the Death Ride if that plan falls through.

Any recommendations for a bike rack to go on the trunk of my car?

I have this one:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_6_15?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=allen+bike+rack+103d&x=0&y=0&sprefix=allen+bike+rack

Cheap, fits three bikes (which was important for me), and has individual cradles for each bike rather than just bars you rest your bikes together on.

My bro has the Yakima trunk mount rack and I like that it has a contact point for the seat tube as well so the bike doesn't move back and forth. I'd probably prefer that one if money wasn't an option, but it was almost twice as much for the Yakima.

Just got done doing the Chicago Triathlon last weekend, it was the super sprint which was super easy, but still, a good 6-mile bike ride in the race, the only sucky thing was 3 loops, meaning 5 tight u-turns which slowed things down quite a bit. Still finished 120-something out of 707

Where around Raleigh do people cycle on pavement? I mainly mountain bike but see the appeal in street bikes. However the thought of getting hit by a car and/or holding up traffic isn't very appealing to me.

^^ Isn't that like the largest triathlon in the world or something with 9,000+ competitors? so 770 in your age group? It looked like a lot of fun.

I read that one of the pros, Andy Potts, wrecked into an age-grouper that had drifted in front of him. Apparently the bike course is packed.

yes it is the world's largest. i did the super-sprint distance on saturday so i could watch my wife kick ass on Sunday, she did the international distance.

yea, potts wrecked, it was nuts to make the pro's go last, it was bound to happen that they catch the amatuers... the other stupid thing is that EVERY other triathlon is pass on the right, bike on the left... well Chicago was PASS ON THE LEFT. it was VERY VERY LIKELY that the age-grouper that "wandered left" was merely trying to pass another age-grouper. this is why drafting (getting as tight as possible) to the amatuer lane is dangerous....

it was potts fault though, as always you need to talk to the person you're about to overtake and reed even said it wasn't worth the risk, he biked farthest away from the age-group lane and finished first.

and FWIW, there was no separate "pro" lane.

Yeah, that is pretty dumb. In every tri I have watched or competed in, which admittedly hasn't been many, they have made the fast waves start first. Just makes more sense from a safety standpoint.
