^I agree. Most of the time, it seems like she's pretty incoherent. She also ducked a couple of those questions too.

No one missed his point. We just said it was a bad one.

That's not what it means, nor what I meant at all. Was I surprised? Yes. Was I completely floored by the thought that someone who fought for a living, did steroids, and had been accused of domestic abuse beforehand did it? Not near as much.

That's why it's a shitty point. As well respected as he was, it doesn't change that fact that he's more at risk for something like this to happen that any other Tom, Dick, and Harry. It's just not as shocking. Sorry.

You're only in here to defend your friend, and while admirable, you're getting all worked up and looking even more foolish than the initial comparison was. vinylbandit is a generally knowledgeable poster, but this time he said something dumb. It happens.

This could very well be the beginning of the end for WWE

This just has been a complete PR nightmare for the business:

- the timing of all of this with the Vince getting murdered angle
-the 3 hour tribute to a murderer
-the WWE releasing statements about how steroids were not in any way related to this then next thing you know they are uncovering a HUGE HGH/Steroid ring
- they just keep screwing themselves by trying to cover the WWE's ass
- Ratings, ticket sales, WWE merchandise is all going to take a huge hit. There are going to be parents all across America now that will not let their kids watch it now guaranteed.
-And I am sure this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as what else fucked up shit is going on behind the WWE's closed doors as far as steroids and such are concerned.

You add that up with the fact that the UFC is taking fans at an alarming rate......it's not looking good for the WWE at all.

To be fair, the similarites between Benoit and Favre go further than anybody here really seems to understand, and the idea that he was more like Ray Lewis is silly. I don't know anybody who likes or respects Ray Lewis as a person. He's not known as a family man, he's known as Stabbin' Ray, the Murder Machine. I mean, sure Ray Lewis is a better comparison now, but last week Benoit was much more similar to Favre: supposed stand-up guys with some serious issues and a history of marital problems.

Besides, would anybody honestly be surprised if Favre ODs on painkillers after he retires?

Yeah, that Jericho/Benoit feud was a good one ended by a great ladder match at the Royal Rumble years ago.

This whole situation has been surreal. I know I've said that many times earlier, but I still can't believe it even with it almost being a week later and all.

No it's not.

The death of pro wrestling (which is mainly WWE) has been predicted so many times that it has become cliche.

There are two types of people in the world, there are those who like pro wrestling and those who hate it. Those who hate it have always had a majority. However, those who like it have always supported it and do so financially in a big way. It's like NASCAR in the organization's relationship with its fans. And as long as Vince McMahon is making money (he is either a billionaire or almost a billionaire off nothing but wrestling, think about that), the WWE will continue. WWE Raw is the most-watched series on all of cable with about 6 million U.S. viewers and 16 million viewers globally a week. Smackdown on CW has more viewers in the male demographic than ABC, Fox, NBC, or CBS in its timeslot. Per this article, written Monday actually and no mention of Benoit so it was before his family's death was public knowledge, WWE is publicly worth $1.2 billion and had global revenues of over $24 million. http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6454776.html

What will happen is McMahon will adjust his product to satisfy fans' concerns for a period of time. In the early 1990s when McMahon was in trouble with the feds for steroid distribution, he took the title off roided wrestlers and gave it a wrestler that was more skill than puffed up muscles: Bret Hart. He'll probably do something like that now, and don't be surprised if over-the-top storylines, like Mr. McMahon getting blown up in a limouisine, disappear to get the critics off his back. The fans will come back cause they enjoy wrestling, and that's that. If there were a higher-profile wrestling competitor, I could definitely see that competitor peeling off some of WWE's audience, but one does not exist (sorry TNA, you're not there yet).

I'm not worked up, and I still don't think you get what he was saying at all. The comparison had nothing to do with personal spheres, yet you wanted to drag that into this for no reason. Hey, go be happy that you saw this coming since he was obviously "more at risk." Those things you mentioned were in his personal life only, and nobody brought that up at all until you decided to be a dick. Congrats.

at worst, the WWE will just fly under the radar for a year or two... McMahon might even take the opportunity to clean house a bit, take the excuse to get rid of some trouble cases and a lot of the drugged up wrestlers...

if there's one thing i do have confidence in, it's McMahon's ability to take tragedies and turn them to the advantage of the WWE, not necessarily by exploiting them, but by making necessary changes as a result of them...

necessary changes like what?

i mean they cant have enforceable drug tests or they wouldnt have any wrestlers left, since their product depends so much on aesthetic looks and attitudes, aka steroids and cocaine

and if the favre comparison is really true, aka nobody really saw this coming, what kind of changes will make a difference?

Uh... the entire NFL? And have you ever heard him talk? For the most point he's as soft spoken as Benoit was.

For an English major, you sure can't read.

So you're saying that him murdering his wife and child weren't in his personal life? Or are you saying that his professional and personal life had no overlap or what?

No, I'm saying that vb's comparison had nothing to do with either guy being at risk in his personal life to commit murder. I'm saying the comparison assumed no overlap, just based on their professional lives alone. In their professional affairs, it would be equally shocking.

This says nothing about how one might've been more succeptible to the behavior based on their personal lives.

It's dumb because it's so shortsighted.

It's like saying "wow, I never expected Mike Tyson to punch someone in the face. It's almost as surprising as Brett Favre doing it."

You knew what he meant and you picked on it anyway, that's pretty douchey of you.

Besides which, Mike Tyson hasn't always been professional in his boxing life, so it might be more expected of him for that reason instead of a personal thing. And nor does Brett Favre punch people for a living.

I disagree. I watched pro wrestling as a kid, as many of my 24-year old male cohorts did. Now I really don't watch it any more because it went from childhood heroes like Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan to these jacked up looking animals like Batista and it took all the fun out of it for me. I'd say there's probably a lot of people in my shoes that watch a few minutes every once in a while, but we certainly don't hate it. How could we? It was such a huge part of our childhood.

On a side note, I don't see anybody else that mentioned that he supposedly killed his son with a wrestling chokehold. I just saw it on one of the news networks. The irony just doesn't end with this story.

I'm still confused to what the argument even was in the first place. The comparison of Favre to Benoit pre-crazy murder/suicide is pretty spot on in my opinion. Favre is respected in football for his hard working, come in every day and do my job type mentality. He's not really out-spoken and isn't particulary super talented and skilled. He's become a great football player by avoiding big mistakes, being consistent, and working hard.

Benoit isn't known for his mic skills, his wrestling persona isn't flashy or gimmicky. He was a good technical wrestler and his fellow wrestlers and the fans respected how long he had been in the business and how hard he worked.

Wrestling community's reactions to Benoit committing these murders is probalby the same type of reaction football communities would have if Favre had done the same thing. Where's the argument?
