^thats why i'm loving my HDMI xbox360 with HD-DVD. I removed my Toshiba A1 from my home theater setup and let my gf use it at her house because the xbox is so much better on so many levels. Besides being 1080p...its more convenient for me because it doesn't take 20 minutes to open/close load movies etc...it is a lot smaller. and it opens up a slot in the shelves for a blu ray player. 11/1/2007 12:57:16 PM |

yeah i think i really want the 360 add-on, but for 100 dollars it is hard for me to wait it out to see if i can get a brand new 360 add-on dirt cheap. 11/1/2007 12:59:15 PM |

Thye 360s are just so damn loud though. Takes surround sound to drowned out the hum. :-/
Think I'll wait on the nicer HD-DVD drives to drop in price a tad more. 11/1/2007 1:15:20 PM |

loud? really? i never noticed the loud unless there are no sounds in the room. Even then its not much louder than most electronics i've used. 11/1/2007 1:16:27 PM |

It's not super loud, but if there is a quiet point in the movie/game then I can hear it and it does draw my attention away 11/1/2007 1:24:18 PM |

man i love the a20...it's the 1080p version of the a2 and amazon.com has some really great deals on it. it does take about 20 seconds to startup and open the dvd tray though.
i have that upstairs with my sharp aquos in the bedroom and i have the hd dvd addon in the tv room with a 720p samsung. i honestly can't tell the difference between the two unless i'm less than 5 feet away from either one. if blu-ray ever has a decent, competitively priced stand-alone...i'd get that, but i'll probably just wait for the ps3 to have some great games and go for one then.

I would only be worried about getting 1080i rather than 1080p if my TV blew ass.
Might have to go get the standalone HD DVD player later tonight... 11/1/2007 2:01:02 PM |

You really really REALLY want to play movies at 24hz at 1080p. this isn't a HD DVD vs Blu-ray thing, since just about every media producer who is worth his salt will be encoding movies in this. The crap comes from your player, and the interface between your player and your TV.
when any object moves horizontally, or especially when the camera pans horizontally, you'll see interlacing artifacts as jagged edges. the faster the camera pans to the left or right, the more obvious the interlacing will be.
you'll notice 2:3 pulldown artifacts if you're running at 60hz, and the screen will appear to jitter. **anyone can see these if they know what they're looking for, it's not something as imperceptable as DTS vs TrueHD audio.

You're going to have pulldown of some kind unless you have a 120Hz TV or a TV that somehow manages to operate at both 24Hz and 30Hz. 11/1/2007 2:35:31 PM |

The only way to get that player from Bestbuy is if a store actually has it in stock since it is a model that is disontinued at their stores. Most stores in this area do not have them in 11/2/2007 9:53:08 AM |

Also next week (Nov 06), upcoming releases:

What are the differences between the Toshiba HD-A2 and the Toshiba HD-A3?
My reaction to all of it is just dumping discontinued models from last year... It's not a bad idea though. I remember specials on 42" HDTVs in the $1000 range -- the catch was that they were only 1080i, something buyers would only realize if they looked up reviews on the specific model. And since they bought 1080i TVs, why not buy a 1080i player, AMIRITE?
From what I can tell, the Toshiba HD-A30 is the cheapest in their line that does 1080p, and retails for around $350... but hey, that's $50 less than a Playstation 3. 11/2/2007 2:33:05 PM |

i think one difference is that the a2 has ethernet connectivity so you can update firmware, but don't quote me on this.

^^^your reaction doesn't matter because you don't represent the masses. The masses are the ones that buy last years stuff because this year its affordable. Uber-Nerds are a small percentage because they're all either students with no money or cheap and don't buy anything that isn't 'open source' 11/2/2007 3:12:06 PM |

Well, they more than likely just moved about 50,000 HD DVD players in a day with a bunch more price cuts lined up soon, there's no way it doesn't have a substantial impact. Especially if the HD DVD attach rate holds up, last I heard it was something like 4:1.11/2/2007 8:01:02 PM |
